Gertrude A. Duffy, a resident at Sycamore Manor, Montoursville, and formerly of Jackson Heights Apartments, Scranton, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001.
Born at Keyser Valley, in the family homestead, March 4, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Adam T. and Rose O’Brien Rosencrans.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Elinor Schoenfeldt and two brothers, Harry and Joseph Rosencrans. She was the widow of William T. Duffy, who died in 1978.
She was a graduate of Lackawanna Business College and worked at International Correspondence Schools, prior to her marriage and becoming a homemaker and mother.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, R. Ann and Louis B. Knapp, S. Williamsport; grandsons, Louis (Debbie), Williamsport, David and Adam, S. Williamsport.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church, by her pastor, Msgr. Francis J. Castellano.

Thelma L. Pauling

Thelma L. Pauling, 79, of 611 E. Guardlock Drive, Lock Haven, died September 6, 2001, at her residence. Born in Williamsport April 22, 1922 the daughter of Robert and Ardella Waltz Lynch, she was married to Harry L. Pauling who died August 6, 1993.
Mrs. Pauling had worked as a registered nurse in the Williamsport area and was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church.
She is survived by 3 sons, Gordon C. of Milford, Mark L. of Watsontown and Ted L. of New Carlisle, OH; 1 daughter, Susan F. Brooks, with whom she resided; 1 brother, Robert Lynch of Elimsport; 1 sister, Tillie Morehart of Elimsport and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with Rev. Jeffrey Howell of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Clinton Twp. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 5-7 p.m.
Vincent M. Crossen

Vincent M. Crossen, 54, of Port Vue, PA, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001, in Port Vue.
Born September 29, 1946, in McKeesport, he was a son of Jack and Dolores Mullaly Crossen.
He worked as a rehabilitation counselor in the Office of Rehabilitation-Lycoming and was a member of the Church of Annunciation, Williamsport. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.
Surviving besides his parents of Port Vue are two sons, Jack P. of Montgomery and Matt of Port Vue; four brothers, Joseph of Dover, DE, Michael of Port Vue, Patrick of Munhall and Timothy of White Oak; and six sisters, Mary Gulbrandson of St. Paul, MN, Kathleen Crossen of Corbin, KY, Sister Maureen Crossen of Pittsburgh, Elizabeth Busch of Port Vue, Sister Colleen Crossen of Baden and Anne Laychak of Glassport.
The funeral will be held Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Mark Parish, Port Vue, with the Rev. Gerald Mikonis, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary German Cemetery, McKeesport. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by the William H. Craig Funeral Home, Inc., McKeesport.
David L. Hilfiger

David L. Hilfiger, 41, died September 4, 2001, at a nursing home in Tampa, FL.
He is survived by his maternal grandmother; his father, Duane Hilfiger of Mansfield; three brothers, Dennis (Sue) of Mansfield, Dale (Barb) of Liberty and Doug (Deb) of Trout Run; and one sister, Diane (Gary) Messner of Liberty.
He is preceded in death by his mother Margaret and a sister, Dawn.
Carl E. Lindquist

Carl E. Lindquist, 82, formerly of Emporium, died Monday, September 3, 2001, at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Conrad and Janice Lindquist, with whom he resided in Blossburg, for the past two years.
Born May 19, 1919, in Morris Run, he was the son of Otto and Ellen Nybeck Lindquist. On September 4, 1943 in Hartford, CT, he married Virginia Alden, who died March 22, 1999. He graduated from Morris Run High School in 1937 and Mansfield State Teachers College in 1941.
Mr. Lindquist played professional baseball from 1940-1951 for the Boston Braves. Later, he owned and operated the Emporium Service Center for 29 years.
He was a member of the M.L.B.P.A. (Major League Baseball Players Alumni), Emporium Masonic Lodge 382 F&AM, the Arnot Sportsmen’s Club, and was the first inductee into the Tioga Sports Hall of Fame in Wellsboro. He was also a Charter member and past president of the Emporium Country Club, where he was recognized for winning the title of Club Champion a total of 16 times spanning 5 decades.
He is survived by three brothers, Alfred Lindquist, Robert Lindquist and Conrad Lindquist, all of Blossburg; one sister, Phyllis Griffin of Mansfield; and also nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond, and two sisters, Arlene and Irene.
Friends may call at the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home Thursday, Sept. 6 from 1-4 p.m., at which time the Funeral and Committal Services will be held with the Rev. Edwin McElroy, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Emporium, officiating. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Marie Schwab McConnell

Marie Schwab McConnell, 103, of Mansfield, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at Broad Acres in Wellsboro. Marie was born Feb. 23, 1898, in Germania, a daughter of Alfred and Katherine (Stahli) Schwab. Mrs. McConnell was the wife of the late Ernest (Shorty) McConnell, who died in 1977.
She was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church, a member of the former Mansfield Utopian Club, the Mansfield Garden Club, the Audobon Society and a volunteer gray lady at the Blossburg Hospital. She was formerly employed at the Grange Bank and for many years at Tri County Rural Electric, where she was a bookkeeper.
Mrs. McConnell is survived by two granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Susan Marie Johnson of Charlottesville, VA, Sarah (Jerry) Valimont of Mainesburg, PA; grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, Scott (Vicki) Johnson of Mesa, AZ, Stuart Johnson of Easton, MD, Stacey M. (Barbara) Johnson of Mansfield; a granddaughter-in-law, Judy Johnson of Tioga; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; eight step-great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister, Freda Schanutz of Bethany Center, Elmira, NY.
Mrs. McConnell was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Ann Johnson, in 2001 and a grandson, Steven Kiley Johnson in 1997, two brothers and two sisters and "special brother and sister" Robert Schwab and Gladys Schwab Merrill.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. at the St. James Episcopal Church, St. James St., Mansfield, with the Rev. Canon Rudolph J. van der Hiel officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Funeral services are under the direction of Jacquelyn A. Buckheit Funeral Chapel, Crematory, and Monuments, P.C., 637 S. Main St., Mansfield.
Stella A. Murphy

Stella A. Murphy, 81, of Muncy (formerly of Barbours) passed away September 5, 2001, at the Muncy Valley Skilled Nursing Unit. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Willard E. Murphy, in 1998. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Lula Yaw Campbell.
She was a life-long member of the Loyalsock Baptist Church in Barbours and held the office of church clerk for many years. She was a former member of the Plunketts Creek Township Fire Company Auxillary and served as an EMT for several years before moving to Muncy.
Surviving are two sons, Willard "Bill" H. (Peg) of Mifflinburg, Ray (Joyce) of Proctor; a daughter Marion (Tom) McNutt of Hughesville; three brothers, Benjamin Campbell, Alvin Campbell and Claude Campbell, all of Barbours; three sisters, Fannie Rung and Hilda Stoner of Barbours, and Jennie Cott of Manor Care. She was predeceased by one sister. There are five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at the Loyalsock Baptist Church at Barbours, Saturday, 10:30 a.m. with Rev. John W. Pittenger, her pastor, officiating, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. Cleon Haight.
Friends may call at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, Friday from 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the Barbours Cemetery.

Edgar E. Smith, 74, of 421 N. Montour St., Montoursville, died Saturday, September 1, 2001, at Williamsport Hospital.
Born in Williamsport December 6, 1926, a son of Howard E. and Edith Mae Frymire Smith, he married the former Emma J. Schramm January 8, 1949. She died in March 2001.
He was an employee of the Montoursville Boro for over 25 years, retiring in 1989. He was a WWII Navy veteran and was a member of the Crystal Springs Rod & Gun Club and also Wallis Run Hunting Club. He enjoyed the outdoors.
His survivors include 3 sons, David L. of Cogan Station, Ronald E. of Hillsgrove and Gary W. of Montoursville; 3 sisters, Helen J. Tucker and Shirley J. Hampton, both of Williamsport and Ruth Klattie of N.J.; 2 brothers, Richard and Charles, both of South Williamsport; 12 grandchildren and 8 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Haney.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. from the Maneval Funeral Home, "A Life Celebration Home," 500 W. 4th St., Williamsport, with the Rev. Dan A. Leet, pastor of East End Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Montoursville Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
