Norma Jeanne Summers, 69, of 1680 Salem Schoolhouse Road, Unityville, died at her residence after an extended illness. She and her husband, Wayne L., celebrated 40 years of marriage on March 17. She was born in Jersey Shore on March 26, 1933, the daughter of Chester P. and Mabel E. Brown English.
She and her husband owned and operated several businesses, including the former Summers Place sub shop in Newberry and the Oasis Package Store in Long Beach, MS. She enjoyed fishing, crafts, crocheting and baking.
Surviving is her husband, Wayne, at home; three sons, Daniel C. Myers of Newberry, James Adam Myers of Ft. Bragg, NC and David Wayne Summers of Jersey Shore; two daughters, Patricia Jeanne Feigles of Montoursville and Nancy Leigh McCabe of Mifflinburg; two brothers, Leon English of OH and James English of MS; and two sisters, Bessie Harmon of NC and Dorothy Koch of Jersey Shore; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
One brother, Paul English, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 2 p.m. at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Craig Foust, St. John’s United Methodist Church, Newberry, and her son, James Adam Myers, co-officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Unityville. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m.
Dr. William E. Updegraff
Dr. William E. Updegraff, 64, of Glennallen, Alaska, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 15, 2002 in Glennallen. Bill, a son of Clayton E. and Gertrude Bauder Updegraff, was born Sept. 8, 1937, in Williamsport. On July 20, 1963, he marriage the former Carol Louise Courter in Williamsport.
Bill was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Dickinson College of Carlisle, The Pennsylvania State University with a M.S. in Physics, and Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, with a Ph.D. in Physics. His career included various teaching and administrative positions at Lycoming College; Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa; New York State University College, Buffalo, N.Y.; Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio; and Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin. After his retirement in 1999, Bill and Carol moved to Glennallen, where Bill volunteered as Administrator for Computing Services at Alaska Bible College.
Bill was a member and former elder of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Ripon, Wisconsin. He and Carol have been a part of the Copper Center Community Chapel, Copper Center, Alaska, since arriving in Glennallen.
In addition to being a fine, loving husband and father, Bill was a good friend to many. He enjoyed singing, building campfires, “playing” with his computer, and, more recently, searching for his “roots” as a fledgling genealogist. He will be sadly missed, but his faith was strong and Heaven is his home now.
Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Christine (Tony) DeZarn, Castle Rock, Colorado, Jane Updegraff of Beaver Creek, Ohio; son, Thomas E. Updegraff of Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter, Alexis DeZarn; sisters, Lucile (Ralph) Wright of Lancaster, Ruth (Milton) House of Mifflinburg, and Jean Hecker of Lewisburg and formerly of Anchorage, Alaska; brother-in-law, Franklin (Donna) Courter of Blanchard; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service was held at the Copper Center Community Chapel, on Thursday, June 20.
Another memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Calvary United Methodist Church, 1400 W. Fourth St., Williamsport, with the Rev. Russel Moldovan officiating. Burial will be in the Church of Christ Cemetery, Blanchard, at the family’s convenience.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Bill’s memory to Alaska Bible College Building Fund, P.O. Box 289, Glennallen, AK 99588-0289.
Gladys E. VanHorn
Gladys E. VanHorn, 88, of Loganton, died June 24, 2002, at the Lock Haven Hospital.
Surviving are three sons, Robert L. VanHorn of Loganton, James A. VanHorn of Lock Haven RD2 and Larry L. VanHorn of Lock Haven and three daughters, Alice M. Young of McElhattan, Barbara A. Waterman of Lock Haven and Bonnie L. Kinley of Mill Hall.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Yost-Gedon Funeral Home. Visitation 7 to 9 tonight.
Louise F. Watson
Louise F. Watson, 95, a resident of Valley View Nursing Center, Montoursville, died there Monday, June 24, 2002.
Her husband of 54 years, Andrew Watson, died Feb. 20, 1991.
She was a member of the 1924 graduating class of Muncy High School. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1927, she was employed there after graduation and later at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. She also worked at hospitals in Providence, Rhode Island and Cleveland, Ohio, before retiring in the 1940s.
She was a member of Muncy Baptist Church.
Born July 17, 1906, in Muncy, she was a twin daughter of John Adam and Elsie Rebecca Winegardner DeWald.
Surviving are one sister, Mary D. Elder of Montoursville; one stepson, John Watson; one niece, Marnie Hodil; one nephew, Stephen D. Elder; two great-nephews and two great-nieces.
She was predeceased by her twin sister, Rebecca, and a brother, James.
A graveside service will be held in Muncy Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. D. Gene Patterson.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Muncy Baptist Church, Penn & Market Sts., Muncy, PA 17756.
Arrangements are being handled by Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
Jacqueline “Jackie” O. Gitchell
Jacqueline O. “Jackie” Gitchell, 68, of Lawrenceville, died June 22, 2002 at home.
Born July 12, 1933, she was a daughter of Merton & Theresa Patt Saunders. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, William H. Gitchell, 4 daughters, 1 son & 1 brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Wellsboro. Visitation 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro.
Donald H. Hill
Donald H. Hill, 72, of 149 Hills Lane, Montgomery, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the home of his son.
His wife of 47 years, the former Lois L. McCollin, died April 16, 1998.
He retired from Green Lawn Memorial Park and had previously worked for J. C. Decker, Montgomery.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He enjoyed baseball.
Born April 29, 1930, in Montgomery, he was the son of Thomas and Elmyra Bennett Hill, Sr.
Surviving are two sons, Donald H. Hill, Jr. and James N. Hill, both of Montgomery; one daughter, Linda Kerwell of Montgomery; one brother, Brady E. Hill of Watsontown; three sisters, Eva Zettles of Florida, Dorothy Hess of Lewisburg and Barbara Huggler of Galeton; three grandsons, Ronald L. Applegate, Jr., Michael W. Applegate and Chad M. Hill; and one great-grandson, Levi Applegate.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy. Officiating will be the Rev. Larry A. Lefeber, pastor of Clinton Baptist Church, Montgomery. Interment with full military honors will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m.
Jennifer “Jenn” N. Hinds
Jennifer N. “Jenn” Hinds, 19, a resident of 200 Charles Road, Muncy, died at 11:08 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2002, as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born in Williamsport on Monday, March 7, 1983, she was the daughter of Randy D. and June M. (Sitler) Hinds of Muncy.
Jennifer was a 2001 graduate of Muncy High School, where she was the manager of the football team.
Jenn was employed as a sales associate at Circuit City, Muncy.
She attended the Agape Fellowship at Williamsport. She enjoyed music and was a great Dale Ernhardt, Jr., fan. Jenn was a former member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Stephanie L. Hinds, Muncy; maternal grandparents, Carl H. and Jane Sitler, Jersey Shore; maternal grandmother, Aleda Sitler, Williamsport; and paternal grandparents, Harry E. and Ruth Hinds, Avis.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Galen R. Betzer Funeral Service, 108 N. Main Street, Muncy, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2002, with Pastor Michael L. Deal of the Agape Fellowship, officiating. Interment will be in the Muncy Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
