Collins W. Swarthout
Collins W. Swarthout, born Nov. 1, 1917, in Beulah Land, Lycoming County, died Feb. 26, 2003, in the Jersey Shore Hospital. He was the son of John Swarthout and Clara Brion Swarthout.
He spent his 85 years at Okome, where his family moved three months after he was born. Although he never went very far from his mountain home, he touched many lives. Collins drove a school bus for a few years taking high school students from Pine Creek to Jersey Shore. He worked on the township roads to help maintain them and helped to survey a large tract of state land in 1951. Collins served as the constable for McHenry Township for several years and also worked for the Bureau of Forest and Water.
Over the years Collins and his brother, Fred, kept a watchful eye on the hunting camps in the area and was even known to build a fire to warm the camp if they knew someone would be arriving soon. Of course there were those people whom they would pull out of a snow drift or the mud.
Collins enjoyed having people drop in to visit and always entered their names in his Journal that he started keeping when he was 20 years old. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lamont R., Donald G. and Aubrey W. “Fred.” He was loved by all his nephews and nieces. He is gone but they will always have those special memories of their Uncle Collins.
Graveside services will be held at the Okome Cemetery, April 26 at 1 p.m. by Pastor Robert Regan of Buchanan Baptist Church, Williamsport.
