Ernestine M. McMahon, 89, a guest at Rose View Center, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Williamsport Hospital. Born Dec. 29, 1911, in Montgomery, she was a daughter of Berton and Cora (Hill) Peck. Mrs. McMahon was a homemaker and a former member of the South Williamsport Senior Citizens. Her husband, James J. McMahon, died Feb. 20, 1983.
Surviving is a son, Ronald McMahon of Bloomsburg; two daughters, Suzanne Chesnut of Montoursville and Nancy Arnold of Colonial Beach, VA; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Noll Funeral Home, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport, with the Reverend Sandra Foster, pastor of Trout Run United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Edith B. Rich
Edith B. Rich, 83, of 129 Peeples Road, Lake Como, FL, died Friday, November 30, 2001, at her home.
Born October 4, 1918, in Jackson County, WV, she was a daughter of Thomas A. and Lema J. Vaught Babb. She was a 1937 graduate of Williamsport High School. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Robert Lee Rich, Jr.; two daughters, Janice Estes of Woodlawn, VA and Alcinda Ruuskanen of Cameron, MO; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas A. "Pat" Babb and a sister, Virginia Secules.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St., with the Rev. Stephen Parr of St. John’s U.M.C. officiating. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park.
Lucien M. Snook III
Lucien M. Snook III, 23, of 4528 Long Run Rd., Loganton, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in Mansfield. He was born March 11, 1978, in Lock Haven, the son of Lucien M. Jr. and Jean M. Embick Snook.
A bartender for Marks Brothers in Mansfield, Lucien was a very outgoing and happy young man with a contagious smile. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He graduated from Sugar Valley H.S. in 1996, where he was a member of the wrestling, soccer and baseball teams. He attended Mansfield University and would have graduated in May 2002 with a degree in Criminal Justice Administration.
He is survived by his parents, of Loganton; maternal grandparents Leonard and Delores Embick of Loganton; paternal grandparents Lucien Sr. and Shirley Snook of Loganton; maternal great-grandmothers Beatrice Camp of Jersey Shore and Nellie Embick of Aaronsburg; Scott L. Snook of Loganton; honorary brother Jeremy Tyson of Huntingdon; a sister, Jody M. Snook of Loganton; several aunts, uncles and cousins and Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity brothers.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Welker Funeral Home, Main & Water Sts., Loganton, with Rev. Kenneth E. Geisewhite officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be sent to the Trinity United Methodist Church of the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity, Mansfield.
Eugenia Estelle Steafather
Eugenia Estelle Steafather, 91, formerly of Dushore, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, in San Diego, CA. She is survived by a son, William of Groton, CT; two granddaughters; a son-in-law; two great-granddaughters and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, with Rev. Eddie A. Nilsen. Burial in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore.
Chester Strong
Chester "Chet" Strong, 83, of Blossburg, died Dec. 10, 2001, at the Williamsport Hospital. Born May 5, 1918, in Morris Run, he was a son of the late Peter and Agnes Janowiak Strong.
Chet was employed by Ward Foundry in Blossburg for many years until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church.
Surviving are four children and spouses, Loretta (Jeff) Eaton of Wellsboro, Robert Strong of Athens, Ronald (Ann Lee) Strong of Morris Run and Larry Strong of Miami, FL; a daughter-in-law, Lourdes Strong of Coral Springs, FL; seven grandchildren, Stephen, Chris, Sean, Jennifer and Eric Strong and Marc and Patrick Eaton; a great-grandson, Broc Strong ; a sister, Nellie Coons of Horseheads and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Rose Marie (Gubala) Strong on April 28, 2000; a son, Raymond Strong in 2000; three sisters, Mary Brisco, Tillie Nowakowski and Ann Carlson and four brothers, Steven, John, Joseph and William Strong.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Zwicharowki Funeral Home, Blossburg, with a vigil service held at 8:45 p.m.
Transferal prayers will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Richard Fox, officiating. Burial will be held in the parish Cemetery.

John C. Wallace
John C. Wallace, 74, of Main St., Turbotville, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001.
A WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, he is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a son, Dennis and a daughter, Brenda Pearl.
Funeral service will be Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Brooks Funeral Home, Turbotville. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Burial with military honors in Twin Hills Memorial Park.
Edward A. Engel Jr.
Edward A. Engel, Jr., age 80, died at Manor Care in Jersey Shore on Saturday morning, December 8, 2001. He was formerly of 120 Wylie St., Jersey Shore.
Born in Williamsport on June 7, 1921, he was a son of Edward A. and Margaret Hoebner Engel, Sr. He marriage the former Dorothy English on August 22, 1949 and she survives.
He was a truck driver for Halls Motor Co. for over 36 years. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Williamsport and attended the Church of St. Luke in Jersey Shore. He was a life member of Jersey Shore Lodge #1057 B.P.O.E.; the L.O.O.M. Lodge #214 of Jersey Shore and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #1747, Jersey Shore, where he was past Worthy President.
In addition to his wife Dorothy, surviving are a daughter, Catherine L. Palski of Jersey Shore; 2 sons, Harry T. Engel of Lock Haven and Edward A. Engel III, of Jersey Shore; a sister, Charlotte Nichols of Williamsport; 3 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and 4 step-great grandchildren.

Thomas E. Hutchinson
Thomas E. Hutchinson, age 71, of 170 Pinecrest Drive, Williamsport, died Friday, December 7, 2001 at his residence.
He was born in DuBoistown on September 18, 1930, a son of Larve and Lola Brotherhood Hutchinson. He marriage the former Virginia McCafferty in February of 1952 and she survives.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He retired after 18 years with the maintenance department of W.A.C.C. at the Earth Science Building in Allenwood. He enjoyed fishing.
Besides his wife, he has 1 daughter, Colleen Rook of Williamsport; 2 grandsons, Steven and Michael; and 1 great grandson Tyler.
Funeral services will be private and at his families convenience. Maneval Funeral Home, "A Life Celebration Home," is handling arrangements.
Linda L. Sipe
Linda L. Sipe, 53, of 505 Pine St., Williamsport, died early Saturday morning, December 8, 2001 in the Williamsport Hospital. Born January 5, 1948 in Lock Haven, she was the daughter of John F. Packer and the former Eunice Wolford.
Surviving are her mother of Jersey Shore, a son, John F. Sipe and his wife, Saliha of Incirlik, AFB in Turkey; 3 daughters, Angela S. Sipe and companion Irvin Teets of Wardensville, W.Va., Hope R. Wittaker and husband, Richard, of Auburn, N.H., and Adonica J. Dixon and husband James of Pecksville, Pa.; 4 granddaughters; 8 grandsons; a brother, William Colgrove of New York; 3 sisters, Susan Cross of Mill Hall, Harret Lovett of Greensboro, N.C., and Mary Conway of Lock Haven.
She was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the N.R.A.
Memorial services will be Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
