A private service will be Wednesday for Frank W. Heverly, 87, formerly of 789 Edwin St., who died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Manorcare Health Services North. He and his wife, the former Wanda R. Lowmiller, observed their 56th wedding anniversary June 8. He was a retired contractor. Born Nov. 27, 1912, in Cherry Tree, he was a son of Frank R. and Dulcie M. Heverly. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Richard E. of South Williamsport; two daughters, Patricia L. Collins of this city and Karen Heverly; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The service will be at 1:30 p.m. at Crouse’s, 133 E. Third St., with the Rev. John D. Barkley, of Maranatha Bible Church, officiating. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Helen L. Hurst
EAGLES MERE - Helen L. Hurst, 58, a borough native, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. She and her husband, Raymond H. Hurst, observed their 40th wedding anniversary Feb. 21. She was a homemaker and attended schools here. Born July 16, 1941, she was a daughter of George and Martha Davis Little. Surviving, besides her husband, are her stepmother, Beatrice Little of new Albany; a son, Bryan of Berwick; three daughters, Penny Rinker of Hillsgrove, Bonnie Hurst of Muncy Valley and Connie Hipps of this borough; three sisters, Betty Sharp of Pensacola, Fla., Leah Mae Reichman of Delaware and Catherine Carpenter of Shunk; a stepbrother, Thomas Sulsby of Wysocks; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by a daughter, Dronda Lee, and a sister, Patricia Little. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., with the Rev. Matthew Pickering, pastor of the Lincoln Falls Wesleyan Church, Lincoln Falls, officiating. Burial will be in Eagles Mere Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Eva M. Laielli
Eva M. Laielli, 89, of 1004 1/2 Hepburn St. died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at home. She and her husband, Louis Laielli, observed their 52nd wedding anniversary in April. She was a retired seamstress at the former Meelan’s Oriental Rug Co. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. Born May 5, 1911, in Jersey Shore, she was a daughter of Antonio and Anna Vessa Bamonte. Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Carol Laielli Rogus of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Robert Bamonte of Montoursville, Arthur Bamonte of this city and Anthony Bamonte of Syracuse, N.Y.; two sisters, Virginia O’Neil of this city and Adeline Nagy of Silver Springs, Md.; and two grandsons, Jeff and Gavin Rogus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church, 326 Washington Blvd. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call in the church lounge from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday. Frances E. Laninger
Frances E. Laninger, 91, a life long resident of Canton, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Troy Community Hospital. She retired in 1974 from the A&P Store in Canton after 21 years. She previously worked at Canton and Leroy Farmers Telephone Co.as a switchboard operator and Belmar Manufacturing. She was a charter member of the Pennsylvania Covered Bridge Society, Minnequa Grange 754. She was an avid bow hunter. She enjoyed painting, and photography. She was a 1930 graduate of Canton High School. She was a member of Church of Christ Disciples, Canton. Born May 21, 1909 in Canton, she was a daughter of Mabel Snell Lininger. Her maternal grandparents, Frank and Laura Snell, helped rear her. Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Allen of Canton RR 1; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, James and two sisters, Helen Raub and Marie Mott. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Morse and Kleese’s, 40 N. Center St., Canton, with the Rev. Otto Rade Jr.
Otto Rade Jr., 80, formerly of Montoursville, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Sycamore Manor, where he had lived for more than two years. His wife, the former Betty A. Alexander, died Oct. 6, 1997. He retired in 1982 as owner and operator of Motorola Two-Way Radio Shop, Montoursville, and previously was engineer at city radio station WRAK. He was a member of the Willing Hand Hose Fire Co., Montoursville He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in New Guinea. He was a graduate of the former Williamsport Technical Institute. He was a member of Montoursville Presbyterian Church, its choir, an elder and worked with the young people’s group. Born April 24, 1920, in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, he was a son of Otto and Louise Shanko Rade. Surviving are a daughter, Debra Rade Jones of this city; a sister, Caroline Hasham in Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with his pastor, the Rev. G. Oliver Wagner, officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Wilson “Bud” Bredinger, 83, of Merritt Island, Fla., a former area resident, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Cape Canaveral Hospital, Cape Canaveral, Fla. His wife of 47 years, the former Helen Dangle, survives. He retired from the State Correctional Institution at Muncy. He was a member of Lodge 299 F&AM, Muncy, and the Williamsport Consistory. He was born in Montgomery. Surviving, besides his wife, is a nephew, Wilbur E. Turner II. He was preceded in death by a sister, Isabelle Bredinger Turner. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Brevard Memorial, Frontenac, Fla. Burial will be in Brevard Memorial Park, Florida. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-3 Thursday.
Louise E. Cowden Brown
Louise E. Cowden Brown, 83, of Oak Grove Gardens, Avis, died Monday, June 19, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Center. Her husband, John H. Brown, died in 1985. She retired from West Fourth Manufacturing Co. and had been a Catholic nun for 35 years. She was a member of the Firehouse Golden Gems, Avis. Born July 16, 1916, in this city, she was a daughter of Guy Loren and Elsie S. Flexer Cowden. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Shirley Cowden; a brother-in-law, Max Bailey; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Doris Kissell, Mary Jane Kennelly and Ruth Bailey; and two brothers, James and Donald Cowden. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with the Rev. Gregory F. Johnson, Newberry United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. John Campbell
John Campbell, 77, of Wellsboro died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Broad Acres, after a brief illness. He and his wife, the former Naomi Kinney, would have observed their 57th wedding anniversary Aug. 29. He retired as technical services supervisor from Trans World Airlines in 1983 after 40 years. He was a member of Lodge 992 F&AM, Hicksville, Long Island, N.Y.; TWA National and Eastern retirees clubs; national and local American Association of Retired Persons, and W. Earle Champaign Post 84 American Legion, Wellsboro. He served in the Air Transport Command, a civilian force under the Air Force in World War II in various parts of Africa and also served in the Navy. He was a member of Wellsboro United Methodist Church and its men’s club. Born July 19, 1922, in Lockwood, N.J., he was a son of John and Ethel Brower Campbell Sr. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Richard of Seven Lakes, N.C. and Craig of Hummelstown; two sisters, Louise Alexander of Hershey and Evelyn Scouten of Corning, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Jessica, Adam and Skyler. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, James and William. The funeral will be at 8:15 tonight at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro, with the Rev. Fred Hickok, officiating. Kenneth J. Compton
Kenneth J. Compton, 81, a former city resident, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla., after a long illness. His wife of 55 years, the former Aila Sommershield, died in October. He retired as an engineer for Rockwell at Kennedy Space Center and had worked as a salesman for Sully’s Lumber Co. A Navy veteran, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4206, Melbourne. He was a member of Freedom Christian Church, Viera, Fla. He was born in Middlebury. Surviving are a son, James of Melbourne; a daughter, Carla Sue Day of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, George of Melbourne; three sisters, Blanche V. Yaggi of Melbourne, Vallonia Babb and Anna C. Barnes, both of Williamsport; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services were held at his church in Florida.
Clarence M. Day Jr.
Clarence M. “Bud” Day Jr., 79, of 367 Main St., Hughesville, formerly of Picture Rocks, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at home. His first wife, the former Emmy Lou Flock, died Jan. 28, 1978. His second wife, the former Dorothy Sprout, died May 5 1997. He retired as a supervisor at the former GTE Sylvania in Halls Station and Reach Road and its quarter century club and had been a real estate agent for Hodrick and Snyder Reality. He was a former mayor of Picture Rocks and served on the Hughesville Borough Council. He was a former director and current president of the Lycoming County Fair Association. He was a longtime member of the Picture Rocks Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Hughesville Library Board; Hughesville and Muncy Historical Society; Muncy Lodge 299, F&AM, and the Williamsport Consistory, and the Picture Rocks Volunteer Fire Co. A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he served in the Pacific Theater and was a member of Glenn Sharrow American Legion Post 35, Hughesville. He was a member of Picture Rocks United Methodist Church. Born March 18, 1921, in Picture Rocks, he was a son of Clarence M. and Mary Martha Confer Day Sr. Surviving are a companion, Anne Townsend Bulkley of Hughesville; a sister, Ruth Day Cervinsky of Montoursville; a niece, Jane Cervinsky Phillips, and a nephew, Michael John Cervinsky, both of this city. He was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Bradley and Randall Scott. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the church, Laurel Street, Picture Rocks, with the Rev. Barbara Kaetzel-Row, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Picture Rocks Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family will provide the flowers. Richard E. Dowell Sr.
Richard E. Dowell Sr., 76, of Springettsbury Township, York, died Monday, June 19, 2000, in York Hospital, York Hospital. He was the father of two city residents. His wife, the former Ruth N. Strickler, survives. He retired as foreman from ACCO after 27 years and retired from Donsco as a statistical analyst after 12 years. He was an Army Air Corps. veteran of World War II, serving with the Flying Tigers in China. He was a member of the York YMCA Aquatics Club, and served on the board of YTW Credit Union. He was a member of Yorkshire United Methodist Church, York. Born April 23, 1924, in York, he was a son of Wilbur E. and Alba M. Edman Dowell. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Karen S. Wingate of this city; a son, Dr. Richard E. Dowell Jr. of this city; a sister, Delores Myers of Havelock, N.C.; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, 125 Edgewood Road, York, with the Rev. Dr. Raymond D. Fravel, his pastor officiating. Burial will be in Longstown Cemetery. BLOSSBURG - Irma Fowler, 72, of 227 Davis St. died Tuesday, June 20, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Her husband, John Fowler, died Oct. 22. She was a telephone operator and worked for the Tioga Housing Authority. She was a member of Blossburg United Methodist Church. Born May 9, 1928, in Morris Run, she was a daughter of David and Signe Erickson Lewis. Surviving are a daughter, Susan Davis of Blossburg and a granddaughter, April Moore. She was preceded in death by a brother Sgt. William Lewis. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Freeberg’s, 120 N. Williamson Road, with the Rev. Archie Cruikshank, officiating. Franklin Earl Luke, 85, of 2711 Hillside Ave., died Monday, June 19, 2000, at home. His wife, the former Christine S. Lapka, died March 21, 1992. He retired from Ray-O-Vac after several years and formerly was a fireman for the railroad. He was former treasurer of Pennsylvania Quality Control Association. He played string instruments for several area bands. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and was a sports fan. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church for more than 50 years. Born June 6, 1915, in Antrim, he was a son of Frank and Helen Hudzewski Luke. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Elaine Luke Brotzman of Laceyville; four sisters, Dolores Hartlan, Phyllis DiMarco and Louise Moday, all of this city and Marcella Strouse of Camp Hill; and three grandsons, Nathaniel McKinley, Verien Paul and Thane Veren Brotzman. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Ambrose and Robert. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with the Rev. Wendi C. JERSEY SHORE - George L. Thompson, 69, of 590 Knarr Road died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Florence M. Sechrist, observed their 45th wedding anniversary Sept. 11. He was a retired conductor and brakeman for Conrail and the former New York Central Railroad. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of Billy O. Brandt Post 5859, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Oriole United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Born June 6, 1913, in Jersey Shore, he was a son of Lamar M. and Zella E. Parsons Thompson. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Leonard L. of Troutman, N.C.; two daughters, Darlene K. Oakes of Roaring Spring and Holly M. Barner of Loganton; a sister, Carol Constantino of Henderson, Nev.; two brothers, Earl of Pearland, Texas and John of Beaver Falls; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Sees. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Welker’s, 125 N. Main St., with the Rev. Thomas Jones, his pastor, officiating. A memorial mass will be Friday for Catherine E. Anderson, 88, formerly of Valley Heights Drive, who died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services South. Edna Ruth Bower
Edna Ruth Bower, 85, of Mifflinville, formerly of Muncy, died Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Berwick Retirement Village I, Berwick, where he had been a resident for four years. Her husband, Lloyd E. Bower, died in 1977. She retired in 1979 from Schmidt’s Flower Shop, Bristol, and had worked at sewing factories and as a practical nurse. She was a member of TOPS. She enjoyed crocheting, playing the organ and was a former bowler. She was a member of Mifflinville United Methodist Church. Born Dec. 8, 1914, in Moreland Township, Lycoming County, she was a daughter of george A. and Emma Whitmier Geringer. Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn Mae Koban of Mifflinville; a brother, Jesse Owen Geringer of Muncy; four grandchildren and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Glen Geringer, and two sisters, Helen Michael and Naomi Keil. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Betzer’s, 108 N.
