William M. Hammett,
Founder Genesis Counseling Services
William M. Hammett, 56, of RR 1 Millerton, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira, N.Y. He was the husband of Brenda Clark Hammett. He retired after 22 years, Lt. Colonel, U.S. Army, member of the 82nd Airborne, special forces. He was a graduate of Lafayette College and Lehigh University. He taught high school and later became a practicing therapist and founder of Genesis Counseling Services. He was an avid psychodramatist, touching many lives throughout Tioga County. Born Sept. 1, 1943, in Boston, Ma., he was the son of Dr. VanBuren Hammet and Lyla Hamlet. Surviving besides his wife and mother, are a son, David Hammett of Montclair, NJ; a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Philip Marvil of Wilmington Del.; and a sister, Julia Hammet of New York City. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, 139 Main Street, Wellsboro, with the Rev. Dr. Sandra Linck officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Mildred A. Hofford
JERSEY SHORE – Mildred A. “Millie” Hofford, 79, of 322 Pine St., died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at home following a lengthy illness. She was married to Donald J. Hofford who survives. An accomplished musician, she was a vocalist and organist who was choir director at Church of God and Fairplay Gospel Church of Jersey Shore and First Baptist Church of Williamsport. Earlier in life, she was choir director at the former Epworth United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church and Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, all of Jersey Shore. She also worked at Avis United Methodist Church. She was the founder of the Jersey Shore Area Volunteer Choir and The Mixed Choir that performed Easter and Christmas musicals for many years. She attended Trinity College of Music in England. Born May 12, 1921, in Wolverhampton, England, she was a daughter of Alfred and Ann Jones Hulme. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Robert E. of Jersey Shore and Steven G. of Roseburg, Ore.; a daughter, Patricia Swagler of Wellsboro; one brother, Ronald Hulme of England; one sister, Gladys Cockram of England; and nine grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Rearick Carpenter Funeral Home, 1002 Allegheny St., with the Rev. John F. Hoover, pastor of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Lock Haven, and the Rev. Allen H. Goss, pastor of First Baptist Church of Williamsport, officiating. Interment will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

John D. Hruska
John D. Hruska,71, of Watsontown, died on June 23, 2000, at the Kramm Nursing Home, Watsontown, where he lived since March. Hruska retired from the Zenith Corporation in Watsontown, formally know as Philco Ford. Earlier, he worked for the Jasper Wood Products Company of Watsontown and the Watsontown Brick Co. Known as Mr. Fix-it, earlier in life he often traveled the country doing odd jobs. He was a member of the Clyde F. Mowrer American Legion Post 323, Watsontown, and was an avid outdoorsman and card player. He and his wife, the former, Annabella Jeany Aikey would have observed their 45th wedding anniversary on July 28. Born Aug. 9, 1928, in Manistique, Mich., he was a son of John and Gladys Smart Hruska.Surviving, beside his wive, is a daughter, Anna M. Hruska of Watsontown; a stepson, Harold Aikey of White Deer; a brother George Hruska of Eden, N.C.; three grand children and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a stepbrother George C. Brocho. A service of remembrance will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Cronrath’s, 308 Main St., Watsontown, with the Rev. Jerry Caswell, Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Watsontown, officiating. Visitors may call at he the funeral home from 6:30 to the time of the service.

Dorothy E. Moon
Dorothy E. Moon, 75, formerly of Grier Street, Williamsport, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Manor Care North. Her husband, Donald H. Moon, died July 26, 1997. She retired from the former Ray-O-Vac in Williamsport. Born Nov. 24, 1924, in Montgomery, she was a daughter of Owen P. and Ruth A. Yaw Walters. Surviving are five daughters, Shirley D. Harris and Edna M. Ulsamer both of this city, Alice M. Hanna of DuBoistown, Donna L. Ulsamer of Bastress and Ruth Mulberger of Warrensville; four sons, Donald A. Moon of Nisbet; Bruce George in North Carolina, Robert George of Williamsport and Ronald George in Texas; 26 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A brother, Eugene Walters, died in 1995. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. David L. Weaver, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery RR 2. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Velma R. Poole
Velma R. Poole, 90, formerly of South Williamsport and Winter Park, Fla., died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Roseview Center, Williamsport. Her husband, James E. Poole, died on Dec. 12, 1992. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, South Williamsport. She formerly was a member of DuBoistown Garden Club, Ladies Auxiliary of Williamsport Shrine Club and Order of the Eastern Star. Born Sept. 8, 1909, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of Harry Curtis and Clara May Packer Sortman. Surviving are one sister, Evelyn Kocher of Williamsport; four grandchildren, James J. Faust of New Columbia, Jeffrey S. Faust of Philadelphia, Jan E. Faust of South Williamsport and Carol Williamson of Scotland; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen P. Faust on Aug. 25, 1985. A private funeral will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Noll’s, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport.

George Alvin Shires
HUGHESVILLE - George Alvin Shires, 76, of 45 N. Broad St., died Friday, June 23, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Mildred Wilson observed their 51st wedding anniversary May 8. He retired from Schnadig in 1989 and had worked at Modecraft, Muncy. An Army veteran of World War II he served in the Pacific Theater and was a member of Glenn Sharrow American Legion Post 35, Hughesville and Edward J. Smith Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3428, Muncy. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose, Danville. Born Oct. 31, 1923, in Hughesville, he was a son of William and Effie Reese Shires. Surviving, besides his wife, are five daughters, Diana Kuhns of Cogan Station, Jean Malone of Atlanta, Ga., Mary Reiner and Jeannette, both of Hughesville and Tammy Arnold of Thurmont, Md.; three sons, Dennis of Muncy, Richard of Northumberland and Anthony of Cheynenne, Wy.; a brother, Joseph in New York; three sisters, Neola Hanna of Montoursville, Ruth Gephart and Anna Hornick, both of this city; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Althea McCaffrey and two brothers, Clarence and Charles. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., with the Rev. David K. Fishel, Hughesville Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with military honors accorded by the combined veterans organizations. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Tina B. Welshans
Tina B. Welshans, 63, of 670 Woodland Ave., died Friday June 23, 2000, at her home. Her husband, Donald E. Welshans Sr., died in November 1973. She retired from Northern Central Bank after 30 years with the company. Born in this city, Aug. 27, 1936, she was a daughter of Paul and Theone Franquet. Surviving are a son, Donald E. Jr. of this city; two brothers, Paul Franquet also of this city and Chris Franquet and a half-sister, Winifred Franquet, both also residents of Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Crouse’s, 133 E. Third St. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery.

Robert S. Brown,
Ex-Township Supervisor
MUNCY – Robert S. Brown, 76, of 182 Confer Lane, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at home following an extended illness. He and his wife, the former Mary E. Dunlap, observed their 47th wedding anniversary Dec. 29. He was employed at the former GTE Sylvania in Montoursville for 33 years. He also farmed in the Linden area. He had served as a Woodward Township supervisor. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of Pine Run Grange and Canusarago Grange 27. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Loyalsock Township. Born on March 22, 1924, in Montoursville, he was a son of Charles and Elizabeth Menne Brown. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sisters, Carol A. Prentiss of Cogan Station and Donna L. Kennedy of Montoursville; a brother, Carl of Michigan City, Ind.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Brown, and a sister, Carolyn Brown. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. David K. Bixler, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A Canusarago Grange service will be at 8:45 p.m. The family will provide flowers.

Anna M. Casner
Anna M. Casner, of 6905 Pleasant Valley Road, Cogan Station, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Valley View Nursing Home where she had lived for the past week. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

James Doane
WELLSBORO – James Everett Ashley Doane, 86, of Grant St., died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Jeanette B. Church, would have observed their 18th wedding anniversary on Sunday. He was employed by the Williamsport Area Community College and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He was also employed as a farmer, truck driver, milk hauler and rural letter carrier. He was a member of the Odin Grange, Potter County; IOOF; and the Rural Letter Carriers. Born July 15, 1913, at Balsam, he was a son of Melvin A. and Ethel J. Mudge Doane. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, one son, seven stepsons, seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a son and a grandson. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at West Branch Cemetery with Calvin Cobb officiating.

Richard C. Heichel
Richard C. Heichel, 73, of Addison, N.Y., died Friday, June 24, 2000, at Corning Hospital, Corning, N.Y. He was the husband of Frances (Lura) Gross Heichel. He was employed as an electrician with Corning Inc. He was an Air Force veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served as president of the Rotary Club, Girard, Ohio. Born July 16, 1926, in Pontiac, Mich., he was the son of Raymond and Gladys Dewey Heichel. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Gary of Yonkers, N.Y. and Dewey of Webster, Mass.; three daughters, Merri Bliss of Addison, Lura Sue Wilcox of Elizabethtown, and Heidi Baker of Savona, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro.

Dorothy E. Slattery
Dorothy E. Slattery, 86, of 53 Overhill Road, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at the Williamsport Home following a brief illness. Her husband James A. Slattery, died Oct. 2, 1987. She was a member of the Church of Annunciation. She was a 1932 graduate of Williamsport High School. Born July 25, 1913 in South Williamsport, she was a daughter of Earl J. and Amelia V. Piel Carpenter. Surviving is a sister, Betty L. Maurer of Shenango Bridge, N.Y. There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be announced later. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery. The family will provide flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave.

Harrison M. Wheary
JERSEY SHORE - Harrison M. (Mike) Wheary, 90, of 182 Baer St., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, in the Manor Care South Health Center, Williamsport. He and his wife, the former Genevieve Snyder, observed their 68th wedding anniversary June 7. He retired from Conrail and the former New York Central Railroad in 1976, after 34 years as an engineer. He was a Cummings Township supervisor for many years. He was the last surviving charter member of the Waterville Fire Co. He was a the past president of the Waterville Cemetery Association and assisted the Lycoming County Veterans Office in placing flags in five cemeteries. He had been a foreman for C.C.C. Camp 129. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Born, Jan. 13, 1910, in Waterville, he was a son of Frank and Lottie Wolf Wheary. His wife is his only immediate survivor. He was predeceased by a son, Keith; three sisters, Marion Messner, Helen Falk and Ruby Woolrich; a brother, Leonard. A private family service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Welker’s, 125 N. Main St. Burial will be in the Waterville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Howard T. Bassett
A memorial service for Howard T. Bassett, 80, of 45 Beck St., Montoursville, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gardenview Church of Christ with Pastor Edward Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park at the convenience of the family.

Helen M. Bieber
MUNCY - Helen M. Bieber, 92, formerly of 125 W. Water St., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, in Muncy Valley Hospital skilled nursing unit. Her husband, Warren B. Bieber, died Aug. 3, 1982. She was a member of the Keep ’em Flying Club in Muncy and corresponded regularly with many military men during World War II. In recognition of her patriotism, she is being honored with an inscription on the World War II veterans memorial being constructed in Washington. She was a 1926 graduate of Muncy High School. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Clarkstown. Born Sept. 26, 1907, in Clarkstown, she was a daughter of Jacob and Jessie Whitmoyer Houseknecht. Surviving are two daughter, Marjorie B. Fry of Muncy and Meriam R. of Bloomsburg; three sons, Robert L. of Muncy, Gene L. of Winter Haven, Fla. and Dr. Carl D. of Virginia Beach, Va.; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbert and Royal Houseknecht, and a sister, Mildred Houseknecht. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church in Clarkstown, with her son, Dr. Carl D. Bieber, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. Friends may call at Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, or at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday.
