LEWISBURG - Sara Elizabeth Bartges, 88, of Lewisburg, died at 12:54 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg, where she has been a resident since 1990. Born Oct. 10, 1912, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Edwin Porter and Anna Sara (Breininger) Schilling. Her husband of 58 years, the Rev. Woodrow A. Bartges, died March 13, 1997. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Scott (Linda Ann) Basom, Mifflinburg, and two grandsons. She was preceded in death by a son, Rodger A. Bartges in 1942; two sisters, Della Cramer and Vera Snook; and a grandson, Adam Charles Basom, in 1980. She was a 1930 graduate of Lewistown High School and graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. She taught elementary education for six years in Lewistown public schools. Later, in Washington, D.C., she was director of Albright Day Care Center for 16 years. She wrote Sunday school and junior church curriculum material for many years for the Evangelical United Brethren Church. She assisted her husband in serving the following United Methodist Churches: Nesscopeck; Grace in York; Albright Memorial in Washington, D.C.; Yorkshire in York. She started and directed bell choirs in Washington, D.C., and York. In 1941, as a missionary with her husband to the General Board of Missions of the Evangelical Church, she and her husband were assigned to China. During World War II, they were prisoners of war for 37 months in the Philippines. In 1968, Mrs. Bartges was honored as Mother of the Year in Washington, D.C. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Lewisburg, where she was active in the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the United Methodist Men & Women at RiverWoods. She was an avid knitter, enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, making candles and writing poetry. She loved all animals especially St. Bernards and parakeets. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, South Fourth Street, Lewisburg, with the Rev. Thomas Cartwright officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in St John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lewistown. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Gary H. Cronrath Funeral Home Inc., South Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Children and Youth Ministries of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 42 South Fourth Street, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
PORT ROYAL - James R. Barton, 60, of Port Royal RR2, died at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born April 18, 1940, in Lewistown, he was the son of M. Maxine (Wharton) Barton of Port Royal RR2 and the late J. Theron Barton. His wife, Donna J. (Yoder) Barton, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Boyd (Debra) Foltz and Robert R. Barton, both of Port Royal RR1 and Raymond J. Barton, Port Royal RR2; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Betty Jo) Flood Jr., Port Royal RR2; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, M. Sandra Frederick on April 16, 1996. He was a 1958 graduate of Tuscarora Valley High School, Port Royal. He was owner and operator of Barton's Meats, Port Royal RR2. He was a member of Turbett Grange 781. Services will be held at 2 p.m Sunday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Frank J. Swartz officiating. Interment will be in McCoysville Cemetery, Juniata County. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m Saturday at the funeral home. PORT ROYAL - M. Maxine Barton, 76, of Port Royal RR2, died at 5:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000 at Harrisburg Hospital. Born Nov. 16, 1924 in Turbett Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Ross and Adda (Souder) Wharton. Her husband J. Theron Barton preceded her in death on Feb. 20, 1992. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Betty Jo) Flood Jr., Port Royal RR3; a sister, Jean Campbell, Port Royal RR2; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, M. Sandra Frederick, and a son, James R. Barton. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Wharton and a sister, Mary Kepler. She was retired from the family business and had helped in the operation of Barton's Meat, Port Royal RR2. She was a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church, the Four Seasons Senior Citizens Center, Mifflintown, and a member of the Turbett Grange No. 781. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Marton J. Roberson officiating. Interment will be in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. THOMPSONTOWN - Russell L. Bassler, 76, of Thompsontown RR1, died at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at his residence. Born Feb. 25, 1924, in Millerstown, he was a son of the late William E. and Amy (May) Bassler. His wife, L. Jane (Dunn) Bassler, whom he married Feb. 6, 1943, survives. Also surviving are: children, Robert E. Dunn, Richfield, Earl L. Bassler, Dennis L. Bassler, Sandra J. Gilson, and Patricia L. Lorenz, all of Thompsontown, and Cheryl A. Lauver, McAlisterville; brothers and sister, Robert K. Bassler, Thompsontown, Ronald C. Bassler, Central City, and Julia May Hepner, McAlisterville; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother and sisters, Walter H. Bassler, Evelyn Jacobs, Maxine Pannebaker and Anna Mary Lauver. He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1943-1945 as an airplane armorer/gunner, flying in a plane called Flak Bait, which flew 60 missions over Europe and is on display in the Smithsonian. He retired in 1991, from the the maintenance department of the Pennsylvania State Hospital, Harrisburg. He held numerous jobs from 1950 to 1988 including operating a milk route; owning and operating a garage in East Salem and a poultry business in East Salem; the Defense Plant, Maryland; VanDyke Brickworks; and International Harvester dealership, McAlisterville. He was a member of the Turkey Valley United Methodist Church, Millerstown RR2 and attended the Otterbein United Methodist Church, Thompsontown. He was also a member and past treasurer of the Delaware Township Fire Company; the Thompsontown Area Lion's Club, the East Salem Rod & Gun Club, Troxelville, the Potter County Angler's Club; and a past member of Carter's Camp, Potter County. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the East Salem United Methodist Church, Thompsontown RR1, with the Rev. Dr. John C. Libert and the Rev. Salvatore E. Buonocore officiating. Interment will be in East Salem Cemetery, Thompsontown RR1. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Saturday at the Ronald C. NORTH WALES - Donald V. Baumgardner, 66, of 214 School St., North Wales, died at 8:05 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at North Penn Hospital, Lansdale. Born Nov. 7, 1934, in Burnham, he was the son of the late Earl and Mary E. (Ayers) Baumgardner. He is survived by brothers and sisters, Mrs. R.T. (Evelyn) Corley, Walcott, Vt., Arthur Baumgardner, McClure, Harry Baumgardner, Ontario, Canada, Mrs. John (June) Patterson, Williamstown, NJ, Mrs. Jack (Gladys) Ferguson, Milroy, and Gary Cramer, Panama City, Fla. He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers, Mae Koslap, Kermit, Nelson, Melvin and Eugene Baumgardner. He was a U.S. Navy and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a stock clerk at Kmart Inc., Lansdale. He was a life member of the Reading VFW Post 28, a life member of KOOTIE PT 29, Williamstown, NJ, and a member of the American Legion Post 184, Perkiomen, East Greenville. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Bernard Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery, Burnham, where military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown. Friends may call from noon until the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home.
LEWISTOWN - Pearl E. Baykash, 91, of 129 N. Grand St., Lewistown, died at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Centre Community Hospital, State College. Born Nov. 13, 1909, in Lockport, she was a daughter of the late Calvin D. and Etta (Cargill) Pearson. She is survived by a sister, Verdie Hostetler, 129 N. Grand St., Lewistown and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers, John, Calvin, Russell, Leroy, Melvin, and Dick Pearson. Early in life, she was employed by the American Viscose Corporation and later as a secretary for Greenwood Mills, New York, NY, a textile manufacturing company. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Private interment will be held at Lind Memorial Cemetery, Lewistown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Salvation Army, 9 S. Dorcas St., Lewistown, PA 17044. NEW CUMBERLAND - Clareen O. Beamer, 55, of New Cumberland, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence of Hospice of Central PA, Susquehanna Township. Born Jan. 3, 1945, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence J. and A. Isabel (Herbster) Oberlin. Her husband, Chester G. Beamer, preceded her in death. Surviving are: children, Karen A. Beamer, New Cumberland and Scott D. Beamer, Cranberry Township; and a sister, Audell Edgin, Marcy, NY. She earned her undergraduate degree from Bloomsburg University and her Masters in Education from Temple University. She was a supervisor for Cerebral Palsy, Camp Hill. She was a member of Fishing Creek Salem United Methodist Church, Etters. She loved pets and making crafts of all kinds. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Parthemore Funeral Home and Cremation Services, New Cumberland. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Lower Paxton Township. Friends may call 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services Saturday at the funeral home. MAPLETON DEPOT - Gladys M. Beatty, 82, of Mapleton Depot RR1, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at her home. Born Nov. 10, 1918, in Bellwood, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Mary Blanche (Whitesel) Witters. Her husband, James Scott Beatty, whom she married March 13, 1937, died April 26, 1965. Surviving are: children, William S. "Bill" Beatty, Jonestown RR2, Beverly A. Boozel, James Creek RR1, Mary A. Boozel, Big Green Briar Road, McVeytown, and Donna Neely, Maryland; a sister, Nora Railing, Chambersburg; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children, Dorothy Mae Branthafer, Jane E. Gibson, and Frederick L. Beatty, who was killed in action in Vietnam; and three sisters, Mary Jane Beatty, Ruth Jury, and Grace Wakefield. She was a homemaker. She attended the Beech Run Church of the Brethren, Mapleton RR1. She enjoyed embroidery and volunteered as a helper at the senior citizens center in the Three Springs area. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Raymond Hill officiating. Interment will be in Bowman's Chapel Cemetery, Mapleton RR1. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home.
