RICHFIELD - Clair P. Bassler, 81, of Richfield, died at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2001, in the emergency room of the Sunbury Community Hospital, of natural causes. Born Oct. 31, 1919, in McAlisterville, he was a son of the late Jerome S. and Ruth S. (Peck) Bassler Sr. His wife, Bernice J. (Trimble) Bassler, whom he married Nov. 3, 1945, survives. Also surviving are: children, David L. Bassler and Steven D. Bassler, both of Mount Pleasant Mills, and Janet E. Sparks, Dillsburg; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Gerald Bassler, Clarence W. Bassler, Jerome S. Bassler Jr. and Robert Bassler. He attended Juniata County schools. He served in the U.S. Army, from 1941 until 1945, serving two tours of duty in the European Theater of Operations of World War II. For 22 years, he was a partner in J.S. Bassler & Sons Meats, Richfield and was employed by the U.S.D.A. as a federal meat inspector, for 16 years, until his retirement in l985. He also worked part time for N.S. Troutman Meats, Freeburg, Kahley's Butcher Shop, Beaver Springs and as an assistant to the funeral directors at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, McAlisterville. He was a member of the Richfield United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class and a past member of the church council. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge 619, Middleburg, the Harrisburg Consistory, and a charter member of both the Richfield Lion's Club and Richfield Ambulance League. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Richfield United Methodist Church, with Pastor Vernon Shenberger officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville, where full military honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veteran's Association. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church, where Masonic services will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. by Masonic Lodge 619, Middleburg. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Richfield United Methodist Church, PO Box 206, Richfield, PA 17086. The Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, is in charge of arrangements.
THOMPSONTOWN - Alton C. Bay, 94, formerly of Thompsontown, died at 9:38 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Brookline Manor and Retirement Village, where he had been a resident since January. Born July 20, 1906, in McAlisterville, he was a son of the late Samuel J. and Minnie M. (Leister) Bay. His wife, Mary M. (Frymoyer) Bay, whom he married Jan. 1, 1932, preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1996. He is survived by a niece. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur L. Bay, and by a sister, Dora L. Bay. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He served from 1943 to 1945 as an anti-tank gun crewman, participating in the Normandy invasion. He was awarded a Purple Heart. He was employed as a foreman for Gwen Fashions, McAlisterville for 30 years until his retirement in 1971. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Thompsontown since 1933. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mifflintown, the American Legion Post No. 0177, Newport and the Disabled American Veterans. A graveside service and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Thompsontown, with the Rev. Louise L. Reynolds and the Rev. Stuart H. Lengel officiating. There will be no viewing. The Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, is in charge of arrangements.
ALTOONA - Elizabeth S. "Biddy" Beale, 91, of the Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing, formerly of 414 Orange St., Mifflintown, died at 11:40 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the center. Born Nov. 25, 1909, in Mifflintown, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Fogleman) Smith. Her husband, John C. "Jack" Beale, preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1983. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Patricia) Dillen, Altoona; a sister, Mrs. Frank (Phyllis) Wolfe, Mifflin; four grandchildren and nine great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl Smith, Glenn Smith and Howard Smith, and by three sisters, Ethel Oberholtzer, Pauline Heeter and Hilda Smith. She was a graduate of Mifflintown High School. She retired with 35 years of service from the United Telephone Company, Mifflintown, where she had served as a telephone operator and supervisor and worked in the business office. She was a lifetime member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown, where she was a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, with the Rev. Frank Oessenich officiating. Friends may call 2-2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
McALISTERVILLE - Mary M. Beasom, 83, of McAlisterville RR2, died at 1:24 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born July 14, 1917, in Tuscarora, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Lizzie (Amey) Leister. Her husband, Edward "Pete" Beasom, preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1971. Surviving are: two sons, Robert J. Beasom, Thompsontown and Edward B. Beasom, Auburn, CA; a daughter, Jane E. Amrhein, Thompsontown; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael R. Beasom, five brothers, Oscar J. Leister, Banks N. Leister, Paul Leister, Marlin Leister and Woodrow Leister, and two sisters, Frances Beasom and Gladys Dillman Brubaker. She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading and playing Chinese checkers. She was a member of the Tuscarora Church of the Brethren. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with Rev. Charles A. Sheaffer officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
THOMPSONTOWN - Robert J. Beasom, 66, of Thompsontown, died at 7:50 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Oct. 15, 1934, in Walker Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Edward and Mary (Leister) Beasom. His wife, Ethel I. (Swartz) Beasom, whom he married March l0, l954, survives. Also surviving are: children, Robert E. Beasom of McAlisterville, Tammy Brown of Millerstown, Sue Prye of Mifflintown RR4; brother and sister, Edward Beasom of California and a sister, Jane Amrhein of Thompsontown; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Terry L. "Boo" Beasom and a brother, Michael Beasom. He attended Port Royal High School. He retired from Pannebaker Cabinets, after 14 years of employment. He was also employed by Capitol Products, Carlisle and as a mason for E. W. Ritzman Construction, McAlisterville. He was a member of the Tuscarora Church of the Brethren, Mifflintown RR2, the Millerstown Moose and the Newport Order of Owls. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, growing flowers and hunting for arrowheads and mushrooms. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with Pastor Charles A. Sheaffer officiating. Interment will follow in the Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Mifflintown RR2. Friends may call 1:30 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at the funeral home. LANCASTER - Vera S. Beatty, 95, of Pheasant Ridge Circle, Lancaster, and formerly of McVeytown, died at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Lancaster Regional Hospital. Born Nov. 26, 1905 in Spring Mills, Centre County, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Sara (Lingle) Steiger. Her husband, Palmer C. Beatty, whom she married Sept. 23, 1924, died Aug. 16, 1987. Surviving are: a daughter, Corinne B. Madonna of Lancaster, with whom she resided; a son and daughter-in-law, Earl C. "Pete" Beatty and Dorothy Himes Beatty of Port Royal; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Randall Steiger; two sisters, Renna Wingard and Clare Worry; a grandson, Michael Madonna; one great-granddaughter; and one great-great-grandson. She was a homemaker. She was Methodist by faith. She was a former member of the West Granville Fire Company Auxiliary, and enjoyed baking. Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 South Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Joanne Darrow officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Family will receive friends from noon until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
MOUNT UNION - William Bower Beatty, 53, of 20 Walls Road, Mount Union, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, while hunting in the Hill Valley area of Huntingdon County with his son. Born Dec. 2, 1947, in Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late Raymond B. and Rebecca (Smith) Beatty. His wife, Dixie L. (Hollibaugh) Beatty, whom he married Aug. 25, 1967, survives. Also surviving are: children, Jill L. Sarra, Orbisonia and William D. Beatty, Greencastle; brothers and sisters, Lucille Gaff of Mount Union RR1, Imogene Blatt of Mount Union, Barthol Beatty, Loretta Lukens, and Cloyd Beatty, all of Aliquippa, and Patricia Bidinger of Columbia, Md.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Duane Beatty. He was a 1965 graduate of Captain Jack High School and a 1967 graduate of Williamsport Community College. He spent 9 years in the United States Army Reserves at Huntingdon. He was a supervisor at Case New Holland, Belleville, where he was employed for over 31 years. He attended Rockhill Church of the Brethren. He was a member of McVeytown Lodge F&AM 376; the Altoona Consistory; the Standing Stone Royal Arch Chapter 201, Huntingdon; the Huntingdon Commandry 65 Knights Templar; the Huntingdon County Shrine; and the Jaffa Temple, Altoona. He also helped organize the first chapter of the Order of Demolay in McVeytown; served as a cubmaster and an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 78, Newton Hamilton; and a member of the Order of the Arrow, Brotherhood Rank of the National Boy Scout Association. He was very active in youth baseball having helped organize the minor league and coached in the teener league. He was an avid sportsman, especially enjoying hunting, fishing, and golf. He was a member of the American League and the United States Golf Associations. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Nancy Rogers officiating. Interment will be in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg RR1. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home. A masonic service will be held at 6:45 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Heart Association, Huntingdon, PA 16652.
BELLEVILLE - Albert Bechler Jr., 59, of 4270 E. Main St., Belleville, died at 11:03 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Hershey Medical Center. Born Dec. 15, 1941, in Pigeon, MI, he was a son of the late Albert Sr. and Ida (Litwiller) Bechler. His wife, Sarah L. (Byler) Bechler, whom he married Aug. 6, 1966, survives. Also surviving are a son, David Albert Bechler, his wife, Brenda and a grandson, Brett Bechler of Harrisonburg, VA; and 27 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Morris M. Bechler in February of 1991. He retired from New Holland in December 1998 as a steel analyst, after 30 years of service. He was a member of Locust Grove Mennonite Church and the Living by Faith Sunday School Class. He enjoyed wood working and crafts and winter months in Florida. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Locust Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville, with ministers, Max Zook, Gregory Kanagy, Mayard Beitzel and Erie Renno officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove Cemetery. Friends may call 6:30-9 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: Locust Grove Mennonite Church, 3358 W.
