Wilmer Towers Beck, 88, of 1011 Brown Circle, Lewisburg, formerly of Lewistown, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at the Evangelical Community Hospital. His service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and 8th streets, Lewisburg. Burial and military services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.
EASTCHESTER, NY - Charles E. Beckwith, 74, of Eastchester, NY, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the Montrose Veterans Hospital. He was born Dec. 7, 1926, in Lewistown. His wife, Alma S. Beckwith, whom he married Dec. 16, 1950, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Great Neck, NY, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Melissa B. Poore, Alma E. Beckwith, and Kathryn B. Fishman; brothers and sisters, Ronald Beckwith, James Beckwith and Martin Beckwith, June Pauly, Barbara Parsons and Shirley Gussler; and eight grandchildren. He was a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, Long Island, NY. He served in the United States Merchant Marine Service and the United States Naval Reserve during World War II. He was a car salesman for 40 years. He was an active member of Trinity-St. Paul's Episcopal Church, New Rochelle, where he served as warden. He was also Past Master of the Huguenot Lodge 46 in New Rochelle, NY; Past High Priest, Chapter 228 Royal Arch Masons; and Past Commander of Bethlehem Crusaders 53, Anointed 33rd, and other concordant bodies. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Episcopal Church, New Rochelle. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the Westchester Funeral Home Inc., Eastchester, NY, where a masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, c/o Bethlehem Crusader 53, 69 Main St., Tuckahoe, NY 10707 or Trinity- St. Paul's Church, 311 Huguenot St., New Rochelle, NY or US Merchant Marine Association Foundation, Kings Point, NY or the American Diabetes Association, 149 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10016.
LEWISTOWN - Craig A. Bell, 34, of 20 Bells Drive, Lewistown, died at 5:46 p.m. Monday, May 21, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 6, 1967, in Lewistown, he was a son of Letta M. (Dearringer) Bell Henry of Lewistown and the late Austin C. Bell Sr. His fiance, Michelle Taylor of 20 Bells Drive, Lewistown, survives. He is also survived by children, Chelsea Lee Bell and Lauren Michelle Bell, both at home; stepson, Steven Michael Taylor, at home; brothers and sisters, Steve L. Bell, Kathy Walsh, and Mona Kurth, all of Naples, Fla., Austin C. Bell Jr., Debora (Bell) Orndorf, and Jeffery S. Bell, all of Lewistown, Connie E. Mendler, Burnham; half-brothers, Reno Hassinger, California and Brian Hassinger, McAlisterville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas D. Bell Sr. He was a bricklayer for 15 years and most recently worked for Haranin Construction. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Bruce Hinderliter officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. LEWISTOWN - William K. Bell Sr., 93, formerly of South Main Street, Lewistown, died at 4:35 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3, 2001 at Ohesson Manor. Born Sept. 22, 1907 in Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Albert J. and Edna R. (Harshbarger) Bell. His first wife Mary Helen (Laub) Bell preceded him in death, as did his second wife Nellie (Ettinger) Bell and his third wife Evelyn Bishop Stewart Bell. Surviving are: children, James B. Bell, Walter L. Bell, William K. Bell Jr. and Charles E. Bell, all of Lewistown; a sister, Kathryn E. Weimer, Belleville; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, one step-son, two brothers, two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. He was a farmer, a lumberman and woodworker who owned and operated William K. Bell Woodworking Mill. He was a member of the Maitland Brethren Church. A graveside service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Maitland Brethren Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Eldridge officiating. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maitland Cemetery Company, Inc., c/o Mr. Thomas Richard, 2027 Back Maitland Road, Lewistown, PA 17044. OOLTEWAH, Tenn. - Mary Gale Benda, 49, of 9231 Lockhaven Cove, Ooltewah, Tenn., formerly of Richmond, Va., died at 10:55 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md. Born May 8, 1951, in Philippi, W. Va., she was the daughter of Goodloe J. and Mary J. (Humphreys) Dadisman of 215 S. Kishacoquillas St., Belleville. Her husband, John Paul Benda, whom she married April 14, 1973, survives. Also surviving are: children, Brian Patrick Benda, Kelly Marie Benda, and Scott Anthony Benda, all at home; a brother, Danny Joe Dadisman of Belleville; and a sister, Deborah Lynn Stroup of Belleville. She was a June 1969 graduate of Coshocton High School, Coshocton, Ohio. She attended Ohio Northern University and Bowling Green University, where she graduated in December 1972, and she majored in Speech Pathology and Audiology. She graduated from Marshall College with a masters in Speech Pathology and Audiology. She had been employed by the Virginia and Tennessee School Districts as an elementary and high school speech pathologist, working with special needs children. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Chattanooga, Tenn. and a past member of Epiphany Catholic Church, Richmond, Va. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Epiphany Catholic Church, 11000 Smoketree Drive, Richmond, Va. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bliley's Funeral Home, 6900 Hull Street Road, Richmond, Va. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Samuel G. Strohm officiating. Interment will be in Machpelah Cemetery, Belleville. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, 26 N. ALTOONA - John I. Bender, 69, of Altoona RR5, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at his home. Born Aug. 20, 1931, in Belleville, he was the son of the late Iddo and Jamimah (Peachy) Bender. His wife, Edith, (Wysong) Bender, whom he married Oct. 21, 1967 in Altoona, survives. Also surviving are: children, John Bender, Timothy Bender, and Kristi Bender, all of Altoona, Steven Bender and Alice Baughman, both of Hollidaysburg; brothers and sisters, Simon Bender, Wisconsin, Samuel Bender, McVeytown, Jonas Bender, Mifflinburg, Susie Bender and Amelia Bender, both of Belleville; and six grandchildren. He retired as a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of Frankstown Park Missionary Church, Hollidaysburg. He enjoyed woodworking. Services were held Saturday at Frankstown Park Missionary Church, with the Rev. Roland Cadle officiating. Interment was in Carson Valley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: Frankstown Park Missionary Church, Church Lane, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648. Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg, was in charge of arrangements.
GRANVILLE - Mary Ella Bender, 76, of the Malta Home for the Aging, Granville, formerly of Thompsontown RR1, died at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the home. Born June 6, 1925, in Thompsontown, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd B. and Sara E. (Jones) Speece. Her husband, Raymond S. Bender, whom she married Nov. 11, 1942, died Jan. 13, 1982. Surviving are: children, Harmon J. Bender, HC-67, Mifflin, William D. Bender, Thompsontown, Kaylene S. Swartz, Port Royal RR3, Carol R. Bender, Mifflintown RR4, Anna M. Haubert, Mifflintown RR2, and Maude I. Speece, Thompsontown RR1; a brother, Wayne Speece, Harrisburg; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Speece and Harmon Speece and a sister, Ruth Rice. She attended the Goodville Grammar School. She was a homemaker and attended the Ferguson Valley Brethren in Christ Church. Her special interests were picking fruit, canning, cooking and baking. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Frank Trego and the Rev. George Swartz officiating. Interment will be in the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal RR2. There will be no viewing.
ALTOONA - Naomi Bender, 61, of Altoona, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at the Bon-Secour Hospital, Altoona. Born Feb. 8, 1940, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Edward H. and Georgia Cathleen (Bender) Chapman. She is survived by sisters and brother, Mrs. J. Harold (Gerri) Aitkin, 3044 Old Stage Road, Lewistown, Mrs. Brian (Donna) Funk, 10 Waterford Drive, Mt. Holly, NJ, and Edward H. Chapman Jr., 2393 US Highway 522 N, Lewistown. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Robert L. Zorn officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to: Lewistown Presbyterian Church, 17 E.
