MILROY - Guy A. "Abie" Benfer, 82, of 3475 New Lancaster Valley Rd., Milroy, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at his home. Born May 24, 1919, in McClure, he was the son of the late Lester A. and Minnie E. (Stuck) Benfer. His wife Mary C. (Putt) Benfer preceded him in death on April 8, 1988. Surviving are: son, Thomas C. Benfer Sr., Lewistown; sisters, Gladys Tressler, Vero Beach, FL and Helen Stewart, Lewistown; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Eighth Air Force. Early in life he worked at Standard Steel, Burnham and was retired from Leacy Motors, Lewistown. He was a 1937 graduate of Lewistown High School and a member of Salem United Methodist Church, New Lancaster Valley, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7011 Lewistown, United Commercial Travelers, AARP and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Marshall Deckard officiating. Interment will be in New Lancaster Valley Cemetery, were military honors will be provided by VFW Post 7011. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
BELLEVILLE - Helen E. Benfer, 88, of Belleville RR2, died at 11:02 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born Feb. 6, 1913, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Caruthers) Shilling. Her husband, Percy M. Benfer, died in 1986. She is survived by children, Robert Briar and Deanna Marker, both of Lewistown, Mrs. Roy (Estella) Smith, Boalsburg, John "Jack" Briar, Mississippi, Ronald Briar and Mrs. Donald (Helen) Bratton, both of McVeytown, Mrs. William (Ruth) Findley, Sand Point, Idaho, and Mrs. George (Marietta) Dunmire, State College; 32 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, a grandson, one brother and one sister. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Belleville United Methodist Church, a life member of the Brooklyn Hose Company, and a member of the Belleville Fire Company auxiliary, the Milroy Senior Citizens Group and a former member of the Rebekah's. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Larry Siikanen officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Milroy Senior Citizens Center, 27 S. Main St., Milroy, PA 17063.
HARRISBURG - Grace I. Benner, 51, of Front Street, Harrisburg, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Harrisburg General Hospital. Born Jan. 29, 1950, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of Robert D. and Anna (Rossetti) Miller of 7 Spanogle Ave., Lewistown. Also surviving are: children, Thomas Benner of 5615 N. Front St., Harrisburg and Anna Benner of 5613 N. Front St., Harrisburg. Retired on disability, she had been an ID checker for Carlisle War College. She was a member of the Mt. Laurel Church of God, Harrisburg. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown, with the Rev. Darrell Wireman officiating. Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, is handling arrangements.
BELLEVILLE - Harold L. Benner, 89, a resident of Valley View Haven, Belleville, formerly of 320 Seventh Ave., Burnham, died at 8:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Valley View Haven. Born Dec. 15, 1911, in McAlisterville, he was the son of the late John and Emma (Stroup) Benner. His wife, Margaret (Reese) Benner, died July 13, 1977. He is survived by a niece, whom he raised, Joyce Hertzler, 201 Fourth Ave., Burnham; brother and sister, Merle Benner, Thompsontown and Ruth Foxx, Lewistown. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ray, Earl and Harry Benner and two sisters, Ida Mae Grassmyer and Dorothy. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was a supervisor for Standard Steel, Burnham. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Thomas B. Morningstar officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
THOMPSONTOWN - J. Robert Benner, 75, of 53 W. Main St., Thompsontown, formerly of East Salem, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at his home. Born April 21, 1926, in South Dakota, he was the son of the late Jay and Mary J. (Kauffman) Benner. His first wife, Thelma Rose (Guyer) Benner, died June 21, 1986 and his second wife, M. Geraldine (Detra) Wagner Benner, died Feb. 18, 1999. Surviving are: sons, Robert E. Benner, Mifflintown RR2 and Gary L. Benner, Thompsontown; brothers and sister, Carl Benner, Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1, Henry Benner, Palmyra, and Wilma Fisher, Newport; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mildred Mae Benner. He retired June 2, 1987 from the Pennsylvania Railroad as a car repairman with 40 years of service in Enola. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, East Salem. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Dewey L. Holesapple officiating. Interment will be in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Ruth L. Bennett, 69, of 630 W. Sixth St., Lewistown, died at 3:34 a.m. Friday at her residence. Born March 9, 1932, in Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Banks and Beulah (Krick) Hutchinson. She was raised by Clifford F. and Maude H. (Hutchinson) Shirey who also preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Nelson F. Bennett, whom she married on Jan. 28, 1951. Also surviving are: children, Nancy J. Fleck, McClure, Brian M. Bennett, McVeytown, and Banks N. Bennett, Lewistown; brothers and sisters, Arlene Gane, Gilbertsville, Beulah "Dolly" Purcell, Lewistown, and Banks Hutchinson and Homer Hutchinson, both of Honey Grove; Peggy Swartz and Tom Shirey, both of Lewistown, with whom she was raised; and seven grandchildren. She worked at the Russell National Bank for 40 years, serving in many capacities and retiring as a loan officer in 1993. She was a member of the Lake Park United Methodist Church, and she enjoyed braiding wool rugs and spending time with her family. Her service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Mark S. Brower officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park Cemetery. BELLEVILLE - Chester A. Benson, 91, formerly of Belleville, died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born Oct. 10, 1909, in Jackson Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Daniel M. and Susan (Sills) Benson. His wife, Minnie E. (Koser) Benson, preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 1983. Surviving are: children, Kenneth R. Benson, Rockville, MD and Mrs. Sherwood (Barbara) Frankhouser, Belleville; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Wilkins, on Nov. 15, 1997, a brother, Oliver M. Benson, and a sister, Esther M. Aurand. He was a crane operator at Standard Steel for 25 years, retiring in January 1972, and a member of the West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church, Belleville. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, with the Rev. Samuel G. Strohm officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Belleville. Friends will be received 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 98, Belleville, PA 17004.
CAMP HILL - Southard C. "Tut" Beward, 89, of Manor Care, Camp Hill, formerly of Mifflintown RR3, died at 10:25 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at the nursing home. Born June 26, 1911, in Mifflin, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Charles M. and Grace (Pyles) Beward. His wife, Iva K. (Kauffman) Beward, died Aug. 21, 2000. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Phyllis B.) Weller, McAlisterville and Barbara J. Beward, Mechanicsburg; one sister, Ruth Stauffer, Harrisburg; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles D. Beward on May 24, 1986. He retired in 1976 with 23 years of service as a custodian for the Juniata County School District, working primarily at Juniata High School. He was a member of the St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and its choir, Mifflintown RR3 and the Milford Grange 773. He had also sang with the Blue Juniata Barber Shop Chorus. He enjoyed gardening. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR3, with the Rev. Louise Knotts officiating. Interment will be in the St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Mifflintown RR3. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown. There will be no viewing at the church Thursday.
