PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - C. Ellis Beaver, 100, of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of 201 N. Beech St., Burnham, died at 1:03 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Bon Secours-Saint Joseph Hospital, Florida. Born Aug. 23, 1900 in McAlisterville, he was a son of the late John O. and Anna Lila (Shellenberger) Beaver. His wife, Pauline B. (Dippery) Beaver, preceded him in death April 2, 1989. Surviving are: children, John E. "Jack" Beaver, Orangeburg, SC, Mrs. Ray (Paula) Helander, Port Charlotte, FL, and Mrs. James (Marjorie) Pully, Hatboro; nine grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, Guy S. Beaver and Carl H. Beaver, and a sister, Jennie Pheasant. He was a partner of Beaver Brothers Baking Company, Burnham, where he started in 1922, and retired from the business in 1962. He was a member of Calvary Bible Church, Lewistown. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard D. Houtz officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Bible Church, 301 S. Pine St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
BELLEVILLE - R. Richard Bechtel, 81, of 321 King Lane, Valley View Village, Belleville, formerly of Mill Hall RD1, died at 3:10 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 17, 1918, in Allentown, he was a son of the late G. Morris and Annie (DeTurk) Bechtel. His wife of 57 years, Betty (Williams) Bechtel, survives, residing at 321 King Lane, Belleville. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Frank (Barbara) Leeper, Jonestown RD2 and Mrs. Joseph (Sandra) Mattei, Kresgeville; brothers and sisters, Louis Bechtel, Pinellas Park, Fla., Frederick Bechtel, Allentown and Mrs. Robert (Elizabeth) Price, Mount Wolf; and two grandsons. He worked as a machinist for International Paper in Lock Haven until retiring in 1981. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Salona since 1948. He was past member of the National Camper and Hikers Association and the Centre Squares of State College. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Valley View Haven Chapel, Belleville, with the Rev. Galen Sharp and the Rev. Jack Archer officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery Kutztown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the chapel.
LEWISTOWN - George D. Behel, 78, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown, formerly of 91 Goss Terrace, Lewistown, died at 12:47 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born May 8, 1922, in Blairs Mills, he was the son of the late Samuel H. and Lucinda M. (Shearer) Behel. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Helen) Heimbach, 516 Knepp Ave., Lewistown; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a trainer at various Juniata County horse stables. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church and the Lewistown VFW Post 7011. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
LEWISTOWN - Austin C. Bell Sr., 72, of 10 Bells Drive, Lewistown, died at 7:10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000 at Lewistown Hospital. Born May 26, 1928 in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Cloyd Austin Bell and Elsie (Chamberlain) Bell. His first wife Donna L. (Barnes) Bell preceded him in death. Surviving are: children, Steve L. Bell, Kathy Walsh and Mona Kurth, all of Naples, Fla., Austin C. Bell Jr., 53 Bossinger Road, Lewistown, Connie E. Mendler, Burnham, Deborah (Bell) Orndorf, Lewistown, Jeffery S. Bell, 12 E. Third St., Lewistown and Craig A. Bell, 20 Bells Drive, Lewistown; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and by a son, Douglas D. Bell. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Delores Hill. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was retired from the ring mill of Standard Steel in Burnham. He was a member of VFW Post 7011, Lewistown. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Bruce Hinderliter officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown, where military graveside services will be conducted by the VFW Post 7011 of Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
LEWISTOWN - Margaret A. "Margy" Bell, 47, of R-618 S. Main St., Lewistown, died of natural causes at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at her home. Born Nov. 11, 1952, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of Audrey (Morrison) and William K. Bell Jr. of 3621 US Highway 522 N., Lewistown. Also surviving are: a son, Troy D. Bell, 445 Freedom Ave., Burnham; brothers and sister, Daniel A. Bell, 19 E. Chestnut St., Extended, Lewistown, Debra M. Tunall, 147 N. Walnut St., Lewistown, Scott K. Bell, 5073 Pajabon Drive, Harrisburg and W. Todd Bell, Lewistown RR3. She was employed at Sheetz, State College and was formerly the assistant manger for the Unimart, Yeagertown. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Pastor John Moyle officiating. Interment will be in the Maitland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
LAKE ANDES, SD - Funeral services were held in memory of Harold M. Benner, 74, of Lake Andes, SD on Monday, June 19, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Andes, SD. He died June 15, 2000, at Wagner Community Memorial Hospital. Born Oct. 7, 1925, he was the son of the late Mahlon and Mary (Comp) Benner of Port Royal. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen (Kisely) Benner, whom he married on Aug. 4, 1947. Also surviving are: a son, Dan Benner, Owings Mills, MD; four sisters, Dolores Singer, Port Royal, Linda Zimmerman, Mechanicsburg, Carleen Weiand, Lewistown and Nancy Shirk, Burnham; three brothers, Alton Benner, Bloomsburg, Robert Benner, Port Royal and David Benner, Camp Hill; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Benner, and a sister, Connie Baylor. He attended Port Royal public schools and then worked at various jobs in Pennsylvania, including Miller's Texaco in Harrisburg before moving to South Dakota. He worked at Melmer's Standard Service from 1946-1952 and also served as volunteer firefighter in Lake Andes, SD. He worked on the construction of the Fort Randall Dam in Pickstown until 1955, when he began working for Western Construction Co. on the Oahe Dam in Pierre. He then owned and operated Harold's Texaco Service Station in Pierre. In 1966, he went to work at the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Belvidere, IL, where he excelled for 25 years in skilled trades until his retirement in 1990. In 1991, he moved back to Lake Andes, SD, where he enjoyed hunting, working in his shop and visiting with friends and relatives. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lake Andes, SD. Clements-Wiese Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
SELINSGROVE - Mabel Margaret Benner, 85, of Penn Lutheran Village Nursing Home, Selinsgrove, formerly of Mount Pleasant Mills RR2, died at 3:27 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at the Sunbury Community Hospital. Born Feb. 28, 1915, in Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Robert "Bobby" and Mary (Meiser) Minium. Her husband, Howard Leon "Pass" Benner Sr., whom she married Sept. 17, 1932, survives. Also surviving are: children, Oscar H. Benner, Richard O. Benner, Mrs. Louis C. (Esther M.) Shaffer, Mrs. James L. (Bernice A.) Heintzelman, and Mrs. Donald E. (Betty J.) Howell, all of Mount Pleasant Mills RR1, and Howard L. Benner Jr., Beavertown; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters and two granddaughters, Cindy M. Benner on April 15, 1960 and Susan A. Benner, in infancy. She was schooled in the Greenwood Township rural schools of Juniata County. She was accomplished at braiding rugs and was a talented seamstress. She was Protestant by faith and was a member of the Richfield Ambulance League, Richfield, the Reliance Hose Company Ambulance League of Middleburg, and Medic 55-Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. She loved flowers and gardening. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills, with the Rev. Roger L. Womer officiating. Interment will be in St. Peters United Church of Christ Cemetery, Millerstown RR2. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Heart Association, 1704 Warren Ave., Williamsport, PA 17701 or to the American Cancer Society, Central Susquehanna Unit, 1948 E. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701.
THOMPSONTOWN - Mary S. "Ma" Benner, 95, of Thompsontown, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Brookline Manor and Retirement Village, Mifflintown RR1. Born Oct. 31, 1905, in East Salem, she was the daughter of the late Daniel F. and Rhoda (Yeatter) Sausman. Her husband, Ray T. Benner, whom she married June 25, 1927, died March 31, 1984. Surviving are: children, Tryon L. Benner, Millerstown RR2, Don L. Benner, Thompsontown RR1 and Mrs. Arthur (Shirley) Aumiller, Port Royal; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Mabel Ward Sausman. She attended Red Bank School. She was a homemaker and worked at Benner's Restaurant, Millerstown RR2 as assistant manager, head cook and pie baker from 1975-1997. She was a member of the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, McAlisterville RR1, where she participated in the quilting group, church suppers and senior citizens activities. She was also a member of the Wednesday Club, Thompsontown, WCTU and the Juniata County Republican Committee. She enjoyed quilting, braiding rugs, and baking cookies. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. John P. Layman officiating. Interment will be in Goodwill Cemetery, McAlisterville RR1. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where family will be present 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren Building Fund, RR1, Box 765, McAlisterville, PA 17049.
