BURNHAM - Mervin S. "Bucky" Buchanan, 80, of 119 Sunset Drive, Burnham, died at 5:55 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, at Valley View Haven, Belleville. Born March 9, 1921, in South Fork, he was the son of the late Edward G. and Myrtle (Mangus) Buchanan. His wife, Betty (Bishop) Buchanan, whom he married July 16, 1943, survives. Also surviving are: children, Gary Lee Buchanan, Warrenton, Va., Mrs. John (Dolly) Houtz, McVeytown, George H. Buchanan, 514 Dry Valley Road, Lewistown; a grandson, whom he helped to raise, Todd S. Buchanan, Reedsville; brother and sisters, Warren Buchanan, Belleville, Ruth Best, York, Myrtle Noon, McAlevy's Fort, and Mrs. Alfred (Betty) Hawn, Petersburg; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Mervin Buchanan Jr. on June 2, 1967, four brothers and one sister. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He retired in 1982 from Standard Steel with 18 years of service as a furnace operator. He was Presbyterian by faith. He served as Burnham Borough Councilman for eight years, was a stock car driver and charter member of the Penn Central Racing Association, having served as vice president. He was also a member of the Lewistown Chapter UCT and the Burnham Lions Club. He raced at Port Royal Speedway for 10 years and at Snowshoe Raceway. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Galen Sharp officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's Cemetery, where graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mifflin-Juniata Area Agency on Aging, Box 750, Lewistown, PA 17044 or to Valley View Haven, Box 827, Belleville, PA 17004.
SHAMOKIN DAM - Margaret Ellen "Peg" Buck, 91, formerly of Shamokin Dam and Sunbury, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the Caledonia Manor Nursing Home, Fayetteville. Born June 26, 1909, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Maurice E. and Catherine L. (Howmiller) George. Her husband, Ernest Calvert Buck, whom she married Aug. 27, 1930 in Lewistown, died Nov. 23, 1981. She is survived by children, Ernest T. Buck, Richfield RR1, Alfred E. Buck and Theresa L. Gemberling, both of Selinsgrove, Bernard J. Buck, Hummels Wharf, Edward V. Buck, Port Trevorton, Mrs. Oran (Catherine B.) Shafer, Duncannon, Larena M. Reeder, Blairs Mills, Mrs. Robert (Venessa D.) Clouser, Mifflintown, and Mrs. Russell (Wanda L.) Witmer, Bangor, Maine; a sister, Isabel Dressler, Lewistown; 31 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Wilfred George; four sisters, Agnes George, Pearl O'Shell, Mary George, and Evelyn Shilling; and two grandchildren. She was educated in the Lewistown public schools. She was a homemaker. She was Catholic by faith. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills, with the Rev. Joseph A. Celia officiating. Interment will be in St. John's United Methodist Cemetery, Port Trevorton RR1. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
LEWISTOWN - Geraldine L. Burge, 58, of 140 Fort Granville Lane, Lewistown, died at 6:40 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born April 6, 1943, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Venus (Hafer) Wagner. Her husband, Richard E. Burge, whom she married Dec. 11, 1965, survives. Also surviving are: children, Michael S. Wagner, Reedsville, Richard E. Burge Jr., Lewistown, Justina D. Burge, Burnham and Mrs. Tony (Jeanette L.) Rowles, Thompsontown; sisters and brother, Nancy Wert, Lewistown RR1, Doris Manbeck and Tommy Wagner, both of Lewistown; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Wagner. She was a waitress for 26 years, having worked at Corkins Restaurant, Laskaris Restaurant, Hoagies & More, and Camelot Restaurant. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church. Her service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. John S. Walters officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Thomas E. Burge Sr., 55, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown, formerly of 491 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, died at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, March 11, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Dec. 26, 1945, in Mifflin County, he was the son of the late Homer M. Sr. and Mary E. (Young) Burge. He is survived by children, Mrs. Timothy (Linda Sue) Forshey Jr., Lewistown and Thomas E. Burge Jr., Waynesburg; sisters and brother, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Sward, Patricia Burge, and Richard E. Burge, all of Lewistown; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, five brothers, Paul Sr., Homer Jr., Harold A., Robert, Roy E. and a sister, Ramona. He was employed by City Taxi and as a carrier for The Sentinel, Lewistown, retiring in 1981, due to disability. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Burnham. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. John S. Walters and Danny Elsesser officiating. LEWISTOWN - Martin A. Burke, 85, a resident of Ohesson Manor, Lewistown, formerly of Burnham, died at 6:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Ohesson Manor. Born July 28, 1915, in Uniontown, he was the son of the late Martin R. and Sarah Jane (Drake) Burke. His wife, Margaret L. "Marg" (Mowery) Burke, died July 31, 1994. Surviving are: sons, Thomas M. Burke, 1745 Lockport Road, Lewistown and Larry G. Burke, 6 Long Drive, Lewistown; brothers and sisters, Donald Burke, Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. H. Ray (Mary) Confer, 610 Erie Drive, Belleville, Mrs. Bruce (Shirley) Brumbaugh, Port Charlotte, Fla., Richard L. Burke, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Edward R. Burke, Duluth, Minn.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wilbert L. "Sonny" Burke and four sisters, Louise Crownover, Lucille Brehman, Thelma Shuey, and Josephine Burke. He was retired from the maintenance department of the Mifflin County School District. Earlier in life, he was a bus driver for Lewistown Transportation Co.; was a mechanic for Snooks and S & S Chevrolet; and worked for Servomation. He attended Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown; was a former member of Yeagertown and Newtown Fire Companies; and a life member of the City, Hook and Ladder Fire Company. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Dale Hippensteel officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery. MOUNT UNION - Peggy J. Burke, 56, of 2 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Union, formerly of Pannebaker Ave., Lewistown, died at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 4, 1944, in Barrville, she was the daughter of the late Melvin Sr. and Mildred (Frankhouser) Sweitzer. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Backie (Kim) Gibbons, Mount Union, Mrs. Steven (Robin) Plank and Mrs. Phillip (Charity) Bender, both of Lewistown, Teresa Turner and Mrs. Ted (Dana) Hess, both of Newton Hamilton and Mrs. Keith (Bobbi-Jo) Lauver, Kisler; sister and brother, Mrs. Guy (Maryann) Heisey, Lewistown and Melvin Sweitzer Jr., Granville; stepsister, Whitney Baker, Mount Union; and 20 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald E. Young Jr. in 1962; three sisters, Vonnie Sweitzer, Rosie Sweitzer and Brenda Sweitzer; and a granddaughter, Jaylena Young. She was an inspector at Scotty's Fashions, Lewistown. She was a member of the Salvation Army, Lewistown and was a former Sunday school teacher. Her service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Captain Eddie Purvis and Major Raymond Simpson officiating. BELLEVILLE - Mary Y. Byler, 79, of 3680 W. Main St., Belleville, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at her home. Born Dec. 28, 1921, in Belleville, she was the daughter of the late Menno Z. and Arie (Yoder) Byler. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Y. Byler and Elmer Byler; a sister, Fannie Y. Byler; two half-brothers, Jonathan Byler and Jacob Byler; and six half-sisters, Lydia Hostetler, Elsie Byler, Leah Yoder, Saloma Byler, Arie Yoder and Sadie Byler. She was a day worker. She was a member of Old Order Amish Church. A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Steven L. Kanagy residence with Bishop John F. Swarey presiding. Friends may call after 2 p.m. at the residence. Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, is handling the arrangements.
YEAGERTOWN - George L. Cameron, 74, of South Main Street, Yeagertown, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 20, 1926, in Perry County, he was a son of the late George J. and Mary V. (Bookwalter) Cameron. He is survived by a companion of 34 years, Norma J. Crawford. Also surviving are sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Beverly J.) Snyder, Charleston, SC and Mrs. Joe (Connie C.) Benner, Mifflintown RR3; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a United States Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a retired environmental consultant with Gannett-Fleming, Harrisburg. He enjoyed golfing. Services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. David A. Cook officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley. There will be no viewing. The family will provide all funeral flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to: the Westminster United Presbyterian Church, 210 Lemon St., Mifflintown, PA 17059. Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.
