LEWISTOWN - Ethel M. Campbell, 97, formerly of Lewistown, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services, York. Born July 18, 1904, in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Annie (Haverstock) Cameron. She was the widow of Lee P. Campbell. Surviving are: sons, Paul C. Campbell, York, and Roy C. Campbell, Harrisburg; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She loved flowers and gardening. She was a member of the Rhodes Memorial Methodist Church, Lewistown. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with the Rev. Thomas B. Morningstar officiating. Interment will be at Newport Cemetery. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: Rhodes Memorial Methodist Church, Highland Avenue, Lewistown, PA 17044.
LEWISTOWN - Hilda A. Campbell, 87, of 326 Terrace Boulevard, Lewistown, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 2001, at her residence. Born Feb. 26, 1914, in Barrville, she was a daughter of the late Chauncy and Mary Etta (Wolfley) Frankhouser. Her husband, Clyde Wesley Campbell, died May 25, 1999. She is survived by children, Donald Campbell, Cyprus, Calif., Mrs. Richard (Gloria) Cook, James W. Campbell, both of Lewistown, Clyde W. "Junior" Campbell and Mrs. Owen (Joann) Froeming, both of Baltimore, Md., John R. Campbell, Middletown, Mrs. Charles (Arlene) Zeigler, Milroy and Glenn Campbell, Velrico, Fla.; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. She was a waitress for numerous area restaurants. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with Pastor Crist Mentzer officiating. Interment will be in Upper Tuscarora Presbyterian Cemetery, Waterloo. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Robert R. Carolus Jr., 64, of 10 Richmond Court, Lewistown, died at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at his home. Born Sept. 14, 1936, in McVeytown, he was the son of the late Robert R. and Janet P. (Stewart) Carolus. Surviving are: children, Robert E. Carolus, Mifflintown, Cathi J. Mowery, Kannapolis, N.C., and Krisi E. Carolus, St. Roberts, Mo.; sisters, Mrs. Jim (Nellie-Mae) Bantz, North Port, Fla., and W. Jaynee Carolus, 10 Richmond Court, Lewistown. He was a 1955 graduate of Lewistown High School. He was a clerk at the A&P Grocery Store, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Mifflin County Sportsman Club and was an avid boater and hunter. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown, with Karen L. McCachren officiating. There will be no viewing. The Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
REEDSVILLE - Lester E. Carson, 69, of 63 Marlick Ave., Reedsville, died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, at his residence. Born Dec. 2, 1931, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late C. Lester and Amanda Jane (Snook) Carson. His wife, Joann (Ramsey) Carson, whom he married Aug. 30, 1952, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Rhonda N.) Davis, Lewistown and Mrs. Robert (Christine A.) Spade, Jacksonville, NC; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis W. Carson. He was a 1949 graduate of Milroy High School. He was a United States Army veteran, having served from 1949-1952 in the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated C.L. Carson & Son Painting and Papering from 1961 to the present. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown. He was also a member of the Green Brush Camp, Greenwood Furnace; the Lewistown Moose Lodge 143; the Milroy American Legion Post; the Belleville VFW Post 5935; member and past president of the Siglerville Men's Club; and a past member of the Milroy Lion's Club. Early in life, he was involved with youth baseball, coaching for many years for Little League and Senior Babe Ruth. He was also active in the Boys Scouts of America, serving as scoutmaster for Troop 106, Milroy. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and Sprint car racing. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Dale Hippensteel officiating. Interment will be private. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the church. Family will provide all flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044 or to Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown, PA 17044. Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
LEWISTOWN - Florence L. Casner, 94, of South Main Street, Lewistown, died at 7:45 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, at her home. Born March 21, 1907, in Granville Township, she was the daughter of the late W. Harry and Carrie Mae (Ruble) Skipper. Her husband, Andrew J. Casner, whom she married March 21, 1927, died Jan. 18, 1961. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Naomi) Johnson, South Main Street, Lewistown; two godchildren, whom she helped raise, Cindy Shirk, Lewistown and Randall E. Miller, Harrisburg; a sister, Leona Griffith, Lewistown; five brothers, Allen Skipper, Lewistown RR4, Ralph Skipper, Middleburg, Donald Miller, Lewistown, Glenn Miller, Carbor City, Calif., and Warren Gill, Tempe, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by stepmother, Ida (Miller) Skipper Woodring; three daughters, Emma (Casner) Varner on July 8, 1997, Dorothy Casner on Dec. 28, 1936, and Shirley Casner on Dec. 29, 1940; a son, Eugene Casner on April 15, 1952; a brother, W. Russell Skipper on Feb. 27, 1962; two sisters, Mary Baumgardner on July 9, 1963 and Ruth Baumgardner on Dec. 14, 1986; a grandson, Timothy Varner on Aug. 1, 1960; and a great-granddaughter, Sherry Moser on May 10, 2000. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Bible Church, Lewistown and the Loyal Ladies Sunday School Class of the church. She enjoyed reading her Bible and going to church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with Pastor Howard D. Houtz and Chaplain James Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Family will receive friends 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home. MIFFLINTOWN - Madeline Rodgers Chambers, 87, of Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Mifflin, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Brookline Manor. Born Oct. 29, 1913, in Mifflin, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Emma (Dasher) Rodgers. Her husband, Llewelyn Chambers, preceded her in death. She is survived by one niece and two nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Maude Kepler, Marian Cook, and Myra Glase. She was a graduate of Mifflintown High School, the Shippensburg State Teacher's College and earned her master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She taught at the Seventh Ward Elementary School, Lewistown for many years. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Mifflintown, the Mifflin Chapter 260 Order of the Eastern Star and the Retired Teacher's Association. She enjoyed traveling. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. David A. Cook officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 208 Lemon St., Mifflintown, PA 17059.
VALLEY PARK, Mo. - Samuel W. "Sam" Charlesworth, 83, of Valley Park, Mo., died Monday Jan. 8, 2001, in St. Louis, Mo. Born Sept. 7, 1917, in East McKeesport, he was the son of the late George and Alma G. (Willis) Charlesworth. His wife, Grace E. Charlesworth, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. John (Lindsey) Higginson, Ilesboro, Mass. and Mrs. Steve (Susan) Ward, Kirkwood, Mo.; sisters and brothers, Ruth Komp, Gulfport, Fla., Marybelle Reiss Richard, Hendersonville, NC, Betty Schattschneider, Sarasota, Fla., George Charlesworth, North Versailles, and James Charlesworth, Longfellow; two grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was a founder of Ward-Rafferty and Jacobs, formerly the Charlesworth-Rafferty Lighting Company, St. Louis, Mo. He was a charter member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, St. Louis Mo., a long-time Rotarian and a volunteer for Kirkcare. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. A memorial service was held Jan. 12 in St. Louis, Mo. Interment was private. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Samuel W. Charlesworth Memorial Fund, c/o St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 1551 Bennett Avenue, Warson Woods, MO 63122. The Bopp Chapel in Missouri was in charge of arrangements.
GLEN IRON - Richard M. "Dick" Cherry, 61, of Glen Iron, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, at Evangelical Community Hospital. Born Aug. 30, 1939, in Dice, he was a son of the late Morgan Cherry and Arabelle (Aumiller) Cherry Kline. His wife, Mary (Watts) Cherry, whom he married May 1, 1986, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Clinton S. Cherry, Glen Iron; a child he was helping to raise, Ricky J. Johnson; sister and brother, Virginia Reich, Winfield and Clair Cherry, Dice; three grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elsworth Cherry. He enjoyed working on cars and building projects. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with the Rev. Carl Geisinger officiating. Interment will be in the Mifflinburg Cemetery. Friends may call 9-10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
