RICHFIELD - Warren O. Benner, 79, of Richfield, died at 5:40 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at the Riverwood Nursing Care Center, Lewisburg. Born Feb. 17, 1921, in Mount Pleasant Mills, he was a son of the late Harvey and Ida (Gelnett) Benner. His wife, Jean (Kelley) Benner of the Riverwood Nursing Care Center, whom he married June 29, 1946, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Leon (Diane) Shaffer, Halifax, Mrs. Jerry (Nancy) Valentine, Kreamer, and Patricia A. Keister, Middleburg RR4; brothers and sisters, Herbert Benner, Lemoyne, Maynard "Jake" Benner, Dauphin, Harold Benner, Richfield, Reno Benner, Lewisburg, Arlene Sierer, Mount Pleasant Mills, Orpha Lyter, Richfield, and Naomi Goodling, Mechanicsburg; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by brothers and sister, Nevin Benner, Leonard Benner and Charlotte Ritter. He was a 1940 graduate of Freeburg High School. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He had been employed by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Traffic Safety, Harrisburg; had taught driver's education at Middleburg and West Snyder high schools; and was a self-employed house painter. He retired in 1983 from the Selinsgrove Center, where he worked as an aide. He was a member of Richfield United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, the Men's Quartet, and was a Sunday school teacher of the Men's and Young Married Couple's classes. He also attended the Middleburg Methodist Church. He was also a former member of the Richfield Lions Club and an active driver and attendant for the Richfield Ambulance League. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and enjoyed playing whiffle ball with his grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Richfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Vernon Shenberger officiating. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, PO Box 206, Richfield, PA 17086 or to the American Cancer Society, Mifflin-Juniata Unit, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044. The Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, is in charge of arrangements.
MIFFLINTOWN - Harold R. Bennett, 74, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown, and formerly of Mifflintown RR3, died at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the nursing home. Born March 24, 1926, in Laceyville, he was the son of the late Clyde W. and Marie C. (Culver) Bennett. His wife, Margaret D. (Morgan) Bennett, whom he married Dec. 25, 1977, survives. Also surviving are: three stepsons, Thomas Masters and David Criswell, both of Houston, Texas, and Steven Criswell, Hummelstown; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Sgt. Lawrence "Bob" (Elaine) Templeton, Hummelstown; one brother, Rolland C. Bennett, Athens; eight step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one stepson, Richard Criswell. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired in 1980 from the Fruehauf Corporation, Middletown as a truck driver. He was a member of the American Legion Post 298, the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post 5863, both of Mifflintown, the James E. Bowen Jr. AmVet Post 122, Thompsontown. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Lacey Street Cemetery, Laceyville. There will be no viewing. Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge Street, Mifflintown, is in charge of the arrangements.
STRASBURG - Robert Haldeman Bergey, 89, of 201 Red Bud Road, Strasburg, Va., died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at his home. Born Feb. 24, 1911, in Mifflintown, he was a son of the late John Roy and Mary (Heller) Bergey. His wife of 61 years, Marvel Maria (Ulsh) Bergey, preceded him in death. Surviving are: children, Beverly Bergey Boyer, Strasburg, Va., Marcia Bergey Baylis, Winchester, Va., John Peter Bergey, Sarasota, Fla., Robert Ulsh Bergey, Waynesboro, and Roger Haldeman Bergey, Harrisonburg, Va.; a sister, Sarah B. Toxvard, Berryville, Va.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Mervin A. Bergey, and by a sister, Dorothy B. Lankford. He was a graduate of Mifflintown High School. He retired from FMC Corporation, with 40 years of service as the Viscose Department head and as one of the country's leading experts, at the time, in Rayon manufacturing. He played professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Braves organizations in the 1930s. He was the playing manager of the Industrial Team of the American Viscose Corporation in Front Royal during the 1940s and early 1950s. He helped organize and start different baseball teams at all levels, including Little League, Babe Ruth, American Legion and adult leagues. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Strasburg, Va., and a former member of the Strasburg Lions Club. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, Va., with the Rev. James Baseler and the Rev. Banks Swanson officiating. Family will receive friends after services at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. MCVEYTOWN - Donald Q. Berrier, 71, of SR 103 South, McVeytown, died at 12:32 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Carole Berrier, with whom he was residing. Born Dec. 7, 1928, in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late Edgar and Alda (College) Berrier. His wife, Mary Louise (James) Berrier, died Dec. 27, 1981. Surviving are: children, James D. Berrier, Rockhill Furnace and Kenneth Q. Berrier, McVeytown; sisters and brothers, Stella Smith and Helen Kling, both of Kennett Square, LaRue Locke, Carlisle, Wanda Martin, Bowling Green, Ohio, Dean Berrier and Glenn Berrier, both of Shade Gap; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, two brothers and one sister. He retired in 1991 as a heavy equipment operator from International Union of Operating Engineers Local 542, Harrisburg. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, Huntingdon and the B.P.O.E., Huntingdon. He was Protestant by faith. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Marian Hartman officiating. Interment will be in Salem Cemetery, Blairs Mills RR. EAST WATERFORD - Matthew R. Berry, 18, of East Waterford, died at 1:14 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey as the result of a one-vehicle accident in Tuscarora Township, Juniata County. Born March 31, 1982, in Lewistown, he was the son of Carl L. and Deborah H. (Zeiders) Berry, who survive. Also surviving are: a brother, Christopher A. Berry, East Waterford; maternal grandmother, Thelma Geedy, Mifflintown; and maternal grandfather and maternal step-grandmother, Karl D. and Dorothy Zeiders, Mifflintown RR3. He was employed as an equipment operator at Tuscarora Hardwoods, Elliottsburg. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the East Waterford United Methodist Church, with Pastor Don Walters officiating. Interment will be in the East Waterford Cemetery. There will be a closed-casket visitation from 7-9 p.m. today at the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove. The family will provide all flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to: the Matthew R. Berry Burial Fund, c/o First National Bank, East Waterford, PA 17021.
MIFFLINTOWN - Iva K. Beward, 84, of Mechanicsburg, formerly of Mifflintown RR3, died at 10:05 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at her residence. Born March 30, 1916, in Milford Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late David and Florence (Bossinger) Kauffman. Her husband, Southard C. "Tut" Beward, whom she married July 7, 1936, survives and resides at Manor Care, Camp Hill. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Donald (Phyllis B.) Weller, McAlisterville and Barbara J. Beward, Mechanicsburg; brothers and sisters, William A. "Bud" Kauffman, Okeechobee, Fla., Donald B. Kauffman and Marion Stetler, both of Mifflintown RR3, Richard E. "Dick" Kauffman, Mifflintown RR1, Helen Kauffman, Locust Retirement Village, HC-67, Mifflin, and Esther Cramer, Mifflin; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, David Kauffman and two sisters, Gladys K. Sterrett and Irene K. Earnest. She was a member of the St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR3 and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 260, Mifflintown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR3, with Rev. Louise Knotts officiating. Interment was in the St. Stephens Lutheran Cemetery, Mifflintown RR3. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the church. BEAVERTOWN - Miriam E. Bickhart, 88, of Beavertown, formerly of Troxelville, died at 2:45 a.m. Sept. 14, 2000, at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village. Born on Dec. 13, 1911, in Adams Township, Snyder County, she was a daughter of the late Reuben W. and Ida (Moyer) Aurand. Her husband, Albert J. Bickhart Sr., whom she married in 1934, preceded her in death on July 14, 1980. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Barbara) Haines, Berwick; two sons, Leon E. Bickhart, Beavertown and Albert J. Bickhart Jr., Beavertown; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Moyer. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran church, Troxelville, where she was a member of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She was a 4-H leader and served on the Adams Township Election Board. She enjoyed quilting. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Troxelville, with the Rev. Donald G. Nice officiating. Interment will be in Troxelville Union Cemetery. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Sunday in the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes 316 W. Market St., Beavertown. The family will be present 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Memorial Fund of Messiah Lutheran Church, Troxelville, PA 17882.
MIFFLINTOWN - Jackson B. "Jack" Biddle, 78, a resident of the Centre Crest Nursing Home, Bellefonte, formerly of Mifflintown RR3 (Rockville), died at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000, at the home. Born June 24, 1921, in Huston Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Mamie (Messimer) Biddle. His wife, Cathryn I. (Dunn) Biddle, whom he married Aug. 14, 1940, survives. Also surviving are: children, George Biddle, Harrisburg, Jeffrey Biddle, Culver, Ind., Sonja Stickler, Centre Hall, and Sheila Sprenkle, Mifflintown RR3; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by five brothers, James Biddle, John Biddle, Jake Biddle, Joe Biddle, Jesse Biddle; four sisters, Sarah Hammer, Maglin Wheeler, Mary Long, and Ruby Miller; and a grandson, Jesse Sprenkle. He was a 1939 graduate of Spring Mills High School. He was a U. S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He retired in 1982 from Conrail, Lewistown as a car inspector with 37 years of service. He was a member of the Union Lodge 324 F&AM, Mifflintown, the Harrisburg Consistory, the Juniata Valley Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the Mifflin Hose Co. No. 2, and the Juniata County Fire Police. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas Compton officiating. Interment will be in Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown RR4, where the flag will be folded and presented by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home, during which a Masonic service will be held at 10:45 a.m.
