MCVEYTOWN - William R. "Bill" Fortney, 74, of 1605 Ferguson Valley Road, McVeytown, died at 9:55 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 29, 1926, in Mount Union, he was the son of the late Ranels and Jennie C. (Sechrist) Fortney. His wife, Edna Jane (Pecht) Fortney, whom he married March 15, 1951, died Nov. 6, 1996. Surviving are: children, Martin L. Pecht, McVeytown RR1, Richard W. Fortney, Lewistown, and Mrs. Walter (Cindy) Chilcote, Mill Creek; brothers, Robert C. Fortney Sr. and Jack I. Fortney, both of Mount Union RR1; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson and a brother, Edward Fortney. He attended the Mount Union schools. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served on a destroyer in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He had formerly been employed by Pennsylvania Glass Sand, McVeytown and Harbison-Walker Brick Refractory, Mount Union for 27 years. He retired from US Sports, Huntingdon in 1988. He was Protestant by faith. He was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels in the Strodes Mills area. He was a lifetime member of the Newton Wayne Fire Co., Newton Hamilton and a member of the Mifflin County Fire Police. He enjoyed camping and fishing. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Pastor Phyllis Hunter officiating. Interment will be in Newton Hamilton Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call 6:30-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be a firemen's memorial service at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
STATE COLLEGE - John A. Foster Sr., 80, of West Township, Petersburg RR1, died at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at Centre Community Hospital, State College. Surviving are: his wife, Annabelle Louise Hammond, Petersburg; children, Mrs. Stanley (Dixie) Wensel and John A. Foster Jr., both of Petersburg; a sister, Cecille Matter, Camp Hill; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria, with the Rev. Myrna V. Speck and the Rev. David Benfer officiating. Interment will be in Mooresville Cemetery, Neffs Mills. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
LEWISTOWN - Thomas C. Foster, 88, a resident of Valley View Haven, Belleville, formerly of South Brown Street, Lewistown, died at 10:55 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2001, at Valley View Haven. Born Sept. 8, 1912 in Six Mile Run, he was a son of the late Cook and Margaret (Stunkard) Foster. His wife, Sue K. (Kephart) Foster, preceded him in death on April 26, 1991. He is survived by three grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by a son, Robert P. Foster, and also by six brothers and three sisters. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre. Early in life he was a painter at American Viscose Corp., and was a self-employed painter/contractor. He retired as head of maintenance from the Juniata-Mifflin Counties Area Vocational-Technical School. He was a member of Lewistown Presbyterian Church. He was a former borough councilman of the Second Ward and a former Democratic Committeeman for the Mifflin County Board of Elections. He was a charter member of the Century Club, and a member of the Lewistown Elks Lodge No. 663, the American Legion Post No. 90, the VFW Post No. 7011 and the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Bruce Hinderliter officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. Tuesday until the time of the funeral at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2001 N. Front St., Harrisburg, PA 17102.
BELLEFONTE - Belva "Frankie" A. Franklin, 89, of Bellefonte, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Centre Community Hospital, State College. Born May 6, 1912, in Aaronsburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank R. and Elizabeth (Acker) Stricker. Her husband, Thomas Henry Franklin, preceded her in death. Surviving are: daughters, Colleen Cramer, Lewistown, Florine Richner, Bellefonte, Shirley Flood, Essex, MD, and Mona McCabe, Alexandria, sons, Thomas Franklin, Jr., Centre Hall, Ray Franklin, Potters Mills, and Benjamin Franklin, Bellefonte; sisters, Wava Duck, Rural Bellefonte, and Gladys Jordan, Rural Centre Hall; 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth M. Wyland, two brothers and two grandchildren. She worked as a seamtress for Balfurd's, John's and Marrara's cleaners. She was a member of the Bellefonte Senior Citizens. She was a former member of Petersburg United Methodist Church and attended The Church of the Good Shepherd, Bellefonte. She especially enjoyed bus trips, flowers and shopping. Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Services, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall, with the Rev. Todd A. Confer officiating. Interment will be in the Reformed and Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. BOYERTOWN - Martha Jane (Hetrick) Frecon, 83, of Powder Mill Hollow Road, Boyertown, formerly of Juniata County, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at her home. Born in May 25, 1917, in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Jerome and Laura (Caveny) Hetrick. Her husband of 63 years, Richard S. Frecon, survives. She is also survived by children, Richard H. Frecon, Therese Frecon, and Henry Frecon, all of Boyertown, Jerome Frecon, Turnersville, NJ, Suzan Frecon, New York, NY, and Jeanne Eberle, Libertytown, Maryland; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. She was a homemaker and owner of Frecon Fruit Farms with her family. She was a member for almost 59 years of St. Columbkille Catholic Church. She was a past member of the Boyertown Women's Club and the Berks County Society of Farm Women. A Mass of Christian Burial for the family and friends will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Columbkille Roman Catholic Church, 200 Indian Springs Road, Boyertown. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown. YEAGERTOWN - Harry G. Fredericks Jr., 66, of 14 Weyant Drive, Yeagertown, died at 12:05 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown. Born March 15, 1935, in Morrisville, he was the son of the late Harry G. Sr. and Margaret (McCarty) Fredericks. His wife, Connie L. (Rager) Fredericks, died July 17, 1999. He is survived by children, Mrs. William (Kathy) Pidgeon, Edgley, Mrs. Dennis (Patti) Weyant and Harry G. Fredericks III, both of Yeagertown, and Michael G. Fredericks Sr., Bristol; sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Joan) Anders, New Jersey and Mrs. Fred (Jackie) Kitman, Florida; and 10 grandchildren. He was employed as a press operator for 30 years at Vulcanized Rubber Inc., Morrisville. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Juniata Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Heart Association, 501 Howard Ave., Building D, Altoona, PA 16601. NORTHUMBERLAND - Daniel Jacob Freed, 88, formerly of McKees Half Falls, Port Treverton RR1, died at 6:25 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Nottingham Village Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center, where he had been admitted on Oct. 1, 2001. He and his wife were residents of 2 Bristol Lane, Northumberland. Born Oct. 7, 1913, in Middleburg, he was the son of the late Irvin J. and Susan (Kern) Freed. His wife, the former Ruth R. Rohrer, whom he married on June 5, 1939, survives. His death breaks a marital union of over 62 years. Also surviving are: a son, John D. Freed and wife, Susan M., Cocolamus; daughters, Mrs. Mervin (Joanne R.) Dissinger, Yardley, and Carol A. Holtzapple, Selinsgrove RR1; eight grandchildren, Kelly Mullholland, Suzanne Newsome, Lorraine Parsons, Kathleen Byrne, Wanda Heimbach, Brian Holtzapple, Kirk Freed, and Jeremy Freed; six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Claire Newsome, Emma Newsome, Melissa Mullholland, Kelsey Mullholland, Catherine Mullholland, and Jared Parsons; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother, Edward Freed; and four sisters, Helen Hall, Mary Rice, Ruth Brown, and Alpha Tharp. He graduated in 1931 from Selinsgrove High School, Selinsgrove. He established the Freed's Drive In in 1960 at Port Treverton, a business he maintained until the late 1970's. He was self-employed for his entire life, retiring in the early 1990's. He and his wife were former members of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Liverpool, where he served on the church council. Presently, they were members of Zion (Hall's) Lutheran Church, Port Treverton RR1. Added memberships include Lafayette Lodge #194; Free & Accepted Masons, Selinsgrove; Harrisburg Consistory; Liverpool Fire Company, where he had served as it's fire chief for many years; and the Liverpool Lions Club, having served as its president at one time. He was an avid reader and an accomplished wood-worker. He dearly loved his family. He also enjoyed playing card games and boating on the Susquehanna River. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion (Hall's) Lutheran Church, Port Treverton RR1, with the Rev. Timothy W. Bingman, his pastor officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church Cemetery. Friends may call 1 p.m. Sunday until the time of the service at the church. MCALISTERVILLE - Kenneth I. Freed, 84, formerly of McAlisterville, died at 9 p.m., Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at the Brookline Manor Convalescent Rest Home, where he had been a resident since 1982. Born Feb. 12, 1916, in Thompsontown, he was the son of the late Ralph E. and Tillie (Lantz) Freed. His wife, Lenna E. (Bottiger) Freed, whom he married Oct. 15, 1937, died March 18, 1988. He is survived by a son, Stephen Sholley, Mifflintown RR4; sisters, Florence A. Ranck and Janet E. Heath, both of Thompsontown; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Stanley E. "Joe" Freed and two sisters, Ruth Ehrenzeller and Helen Lesher. He was a 1934 graduate of Thompsontown High School and he graduated in 1936 from Thompson Institute with a degree in business. He owned and operated a hatchery in Cocolamus; was a chick sexer for numerous hatcheries; worked at the McAlisterville Cannery; worked as a delivery man for JV Oil, McAlisterville; was the Fayette Township Tax Collector; and worked part time for the Clair Stuck Funeral Home, McAlisterville. He was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville, where he had been a member of the church council. He was past member of the Lost Creek Hunting Camp and the Fayette Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville, with the Rev. James Park Bricker officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville. Friends may call 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.
