MCVEYTOWN - Laura J. Freed, 85, of Criswell Street, McVeytown, died at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown. Born Dec. 7, 1915, in McVeytown, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd W. and Bertha A. (Gearhart) Wilson. Her husband, Paul D. Freed, whom she married June 11, 1938, preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 1969. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Leona) Schwarz, Reedsville and Mrs. Terry (Mary) Morris, Garden City, MI; a brother and sisters, Pearl E. Wilson, Malta Home, Granville, Samuel R. Wilson, McVeytown and Florence C. Swartz, Millerstown; three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers John H. Wilson, Russell J. Wilson and Albert L. Wilson, and by sisters, Catharine Wilson, Jessie M. Wilson and Mabel M. Campbell. She was employed as a custodian for the Mifflin County School District in the Strode's Mills elementary and middle schools, retiring in 1982 with 12 years of service. She was a member of the Spring Run Church of the Brethren, McVeytown and the Shining Star Sunday School class of the church. She also served as church custodian for many years. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and flower gardening. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Richard J. Bender officiating. Interment will be in Spring Run Cemetery, McVeytown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044, or to the Spring Run Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 333, McVeytown, PA 17051.
LEWISTOWN &endash; Roy J. Freed, 73, of 330 Logan St., Lewistown died at 11:10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in his residence. Born Oct. 9, 1928, in Mifflin County, he was the son of the late Franklin Freed and Susie E. (Price) Freed Osborne. He was the husband of Donna J. (Miller) Freed, who he married on April 7, 1984. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Brenda K. Specht of Lewistown; five step-daughters, Audrey (Fisher) Brumbaugh of Centre County, Joyce (Dodson) Parson of Lewistown, Kim Shawver of Lewistown, Linda Piper of Lewistown and Suzanne Bickel of Lewistown; three step-sons, Robert Fisher of Raystown, Donald Dodson of Mifflintown and Larry Dodson of Lewistown; three sisters, Naomi Narehood of Belleville, Esther Freed of Lewistown and Mrs. George (Mary) Musser of State College ; two half-sisters, Helen Osborne of York and Mrs. Joseph (Lillian) Duncan of Washington; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers. For 35 years he was a security guard at Standard Steel in Burnham. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. during World War II. He attended Bible Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Rock Cemetery with the Rev. John S. Walters officiating. A public viewing will not be held. Funeral arrangements were handled by Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc.
MCVEYTOWN - Harry James "Jimmy" French Jr., 52, of 125 Scenic Drive, McVeytown, died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 at Centre Community Hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1948, in Lewistown, he was son of Harry J. and Mona L. (Weikel) French, Sr. of 106 Scenic Drive, McVeytown. He was the husband of Linda (Askins) French. Also surviving are a son, Daniel Ray French of Dillsburg; three sisters, Peggy Miller of 152 Scenic Drive, McVeytown, Susan J. Bernat of 231 S. Walnut St., Burnham and Sandi Anderson of 46 Anderson St., Mattawana; a brother, Ronald A. French of 125 Scenic Drive, McVeytown; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by two infant twin sons and an infant sister. He was self-employed as a building contractor and attended Grace Covenant Church. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in Pine Glen Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 59 Farm View Lane, Lewistown, with the Rev. Jerry Wise officiating. A viewing will not be held. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Memorials can be sent to Pine Glen Christian and Missionary Alliance Church Building Fund, 59 Farm Lane, Lewistown, PA 17044. MCVEYTOWN - Terry J. French, 46, of McVeytown, died at 12:12 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at his home. Born Nov. 16, 1955, in McVeytown, he was a son of the late Samuel J. and Savilla C. (Renninger) French. Surviving are: a brother, Lee French, Ryde, a twin sister, Sara J. "Susie" French, McVeytown; three nieces and one nephew. He was a graduate of Centre Business School, State College, and Shippensburg University, where he earned his degree in Business Education. He taught computer courses at South Hills School of Business from 1990 to 1998, and was currently employed as a teacher at Indian Valley High School in the Business Education Department. He was a member of the McVeytown United Methodist Church, and had served as a volunteer for Hospice- The Bridge. He was also a current member of the McVeytown Borough Council, a member and past president of the Pennsylvania Business Education Association, a member of the Pennsylvania State Educator Association, and had served as a company advisor for Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at the McVeytown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marian E. Hartman and the Rev. Richard J. Bender officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown. Friends may call from 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday, at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 South Market St., McVeytown. LEWISTOWN - Benjamin F. Frey, Sr., 81, of 324 Summit Dr., Lewistown, died at 3:31 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001 at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born Feb. 27, 1920 in Lancaster County, he was a son of the late Frederick and Helen (Ortman) Frey. Surviving are: children, Steven C. Frey, 1713 Locust St., New Cumberland, James F. Frey, Columbia, Michael L. Frey, Philadelphia, Robert H. Frey, North Carolina, David A. Frey, Washington and Gwen Happ, Mount Joy; brothers and sisters, James R. Frey, Washington, Janet Coller and Roma Shenk, both of Lancaster, Jane Beidler, Columbia, Marion Lombardo, Florida, Edith Henderson, Wrightsville; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, Benjamin F. Frey, Jr. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a retired technician for RCA in Lancaster and was also a farmer. He was a member of Key to Life Church of God, Lewistown Sportsman's Club, and an avid hunter and fisherman. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., with the Rev. Scott T. Reiman officiating. Interment will be in Mount Rock Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Key to Life Church of God, 110 Logan St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
NEW YORK CITY, NY - Dorothy Brindel Friedman, 83, of 34 Eighth Ave., New York City, NY, died at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at her residence. Born Aug. 1, 1917, in Burnham, she was the daughter of the late William A. H. and Olive (Gibboney) Brindel. Her husband, Abraham Friedman, died Jan. 17, 1973. She is survived by a brother, William E. Brindel, Milroy. She was a graduate of Burnham High School, and attended Ryder College, New Jersey, studying journalism. She spent three years as a secretary for the American Red Cross during World War II in the Pacific area. She had worked as a travel agent in New York City. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville, with minister, Marshall Deckard officiating. Interment will follow. The Reddens Funeral Home, 325 W. 14th St., New York City, NY., was in charge of arrangements. Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, is in charge of local arrangements.
BEAVER SPRINGS - Gloria A. Fuhrman, 52, of Beaver Springs RR1, died at 8:27 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg, following an extended illness. Born June 26, 1948, in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Frances A. (Hartman) Fuhrman, with whom she lived and the late Paul W. Fuhrman, who died in 1996. She is also survived by a sister, Darla I. Walter, Beaver Springs RR1; four nephews; one great-niece and two great-nephews. She graduated from West Snyder High School in 1966 and attended a business school, Gale Institute, Illinois, Pa. She had worked 25 years as a clerk typist at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Harrisburg, retiring in l993. She was a member of Beavertown God's Missionary Church, Middleburg. She enjoyed reading, knitting and painting. Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Beavertown God's Missionary Church, with the Rev. James Plank and the Rev. Aaron McCarty officiating. Interment will be in the Troxelville Union Cemetery. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Saturday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, where the family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: Beavertown God's Missionary Church, Creek Road, Middleburg, PA 17842.
LEWISTOWN - Elgarda E. "Gardy" Fulton, 87, of 508 Lindburgh Way, Lewistown, died at 7:43 p.m. Wednesday, Jan, 24, 2001, at Ohesson Manor Nursing Home. Born Feb. 1, 1913, in Mifflin, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ellen (Longacre) Heister. Her husband, Glenn S. Fulton, died in 1993. Surviving are: children, Edward Fulton, 211 Fourth Ave., Burnham and Mrs. Edward (Jane) Noerr, 115 E. Fleming Ave., Lewistown; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by two sisters. Early in life, she was employed at the American Viscose Corporation. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Clifford R. Miller Jr. officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's Episcopal Cemetery. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.
