MIFFLINTOWN - William H. "Bill" Hack, 67, of 628 Washington Ave., Mifflintown, died at 4:22 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at his home. Born March 23, 1934, in Walker Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Lloyd A. and Ethel (Horning) Hack. His wife, Carlene S. (Sulouff) Hack, whom he married June 6, 1960, survives. Also surviving are: four daughters, Mrs. Eric K. (Kimberly A.) Lunger, Mifflintown RR1, Karen S. Hack, Chambersburg, Mrs. Dale E. (Heidi H.) Miller, Lititz and Lydia H. Lucas, Mifflintown; two grandsons, Steven M. Ranck and Gregory W. Lunger. He was a 1952 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. He played baseball for a long time with the Perry-Juniata Baseball League and was a member of the Elks Lodge 663, Lewistown, Sand Springs Hunting Club and the Overlook Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a sports enthusiast being an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Penn State Nittany Lions fan. He was a U.S. Army veteran and played Divisional Baseball for the Army in Europe. He retired in 1999 with 35 years of service from the Wheel Mill of Standard Steel, Burnham. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with Pastor Warren L. Peachey officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, where the flag will be folded and presented by the Juniata County Veterans Council. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
THOMPSONTOWN - Carl A. "Pete" Hackenberger, 74 of Thompsontown RR2 (Locust Run) died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin. Born Feb. 14, 1927, in Kurtz Valley, he was a son of the late Walter and Verna (Fogleman) Hackenberger. He was the loving husband of Elsie (Kerchner) Hackenberger, whom he married June 21, 1952. He was the father of D. Curtis Hackenberger, Mifflintown RR4, Scott D. Hackenberger, Mifflintown RR2, and Tonda M. Brubaker, McAlisterville RR2, and the grandfather of 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are: brothers and sisters, Robert Hackenberger, East Salem, Joe Hackenberger, Thompsontown RR2, Helen Yocum and Venie Graybill, both of Thompsontown, Lena Heimbaugh, Harrisburg, and Pauline Tobias, Halifax. He was preceded in death by brothers, John and Ernest Hackenberger, sisters, Mildred Brown and Hazel Hackenberger, and granddaughter, Danielle Hackenberger. He served in the United States Army and in the Air Force. He retired in 1991 after working as a carpenter with John Groninger Construction for 32 years. He attended Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church. He was a member of the Tuscarora Softball Association Hall of Fame. He enjoyed hunting and farming. He was readily available to assist with transportation for anyone who needed it. He was involved with playing and coaching baseball and softball for more than 40 years and managed and played with the Thompsontown Blue Jays Ice Hockey team for many years. He was a ready helper to his children's needs and an ever present spectator at his grandchildren's events. His service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church with the Rev. Kenneth Letner officiating. Interment will be in Locust Run Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, and from 9:30 until the time of services Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Juniata Mennonite School Building Fund, RR2 McAlisterville, PA 17049.
TYRONE - Frances G. Hagans, 86, of the Pennsylvania House, Tyrone, died Tuesday, May 9, 2001, at Epworth Manor. Born Aug. 10, 1914, in Petersburg, she was a daughter of the late William R. and Henrietta (Rutherford) Baird. Her husband, Charles S. Hagans, whom she married May 23, 1964 in Mooresville, died Aug. 13, 1977. She is survived by two stepchildren, Gary Hagans, Mill Creek and Mary Jane Price, Mount Union; four step-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by a brother, John S. Baird. She was a member of the Mooresville United Methodist Church and AARP. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Feller Memorial Home, 817 W. 15th St., Tyrone, with Pastor Paul Sweitzer officiating. Interment will be in Mooresville Cemetery, West Township. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, Blair Unit, 1004 Juniata St., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
MIFFLINTOWN - Melvin G. Hahn Jr., 82, of 926 Brookline Terrace, Mifflintown, died at 2:33 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born July 21, 1918, in Walkersville, Md., he was the son of the late Melvin Glen Sr. and Zoa Lula (Dern) Hahn. His wife, Helen (Potter) Hahn, whom he married Oct. 27, 1945, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Samuel L. (Deena H.) Edmiston, Oak Ridge Road, Lewistown; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was district manager of Glick's Brothers Shoes, retiring in 1983 with 29 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Juniata County, Mifflintown. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Howard Houtz officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
NEW BLOOMFIELD - James Homer Haines, 89, of Perry Village, New Bloomfield, formerly of Huntingdon, died at 9:44 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Perry Village. Born Dec. 17, 1911, in Altoona, he was the son of the late William Blair and Celeste (Goodman) Haines. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last of his family, having been preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Frank, and John Haines, and five sisters, Florence Taylor, Sara Mountain, Mary Norris, Ethel Tussey and Dorothy Taylor. He attended the Ardenheim Brethren Church, Huntingdon. His service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Rex Funeral Home, 308 Market St., Port Royal, with the Rev. James H. Taylor officiating. Interment will be at New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at the funeral home.
LEWISTOWN - Stanford M. Haines, 78, of 627 Riverside Drive, Lewistown, formerly of New Lancaster Valley, died at 5 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2001, at his residence. Born Feb. 17, 1923, in Beaver Springs, he was the son of the late George P. and Arie Annie Alice (Bickel) Haines. His wife, Lydia V. (Dobson) Haines, died July 11, 1991. A companion, Virgie M. Peterson of 627 Riverside Drive, Lewistown, survives. He is also survived by children, Janice Barkett, McClure, Nancy Aumiller, Joanne Ritter, and Stanford M. Haines Jr., all of Milroy; brothers and sisters, Goldie E. Ruloff, Middleburg, Dorothy J. Strawser, Selinsgrove, Carl H. Haines, New Berlin, Glenn M. Haines, David E. Haines, Alice M. Weller, George P. Haines Jr., Kenneth L. Haines, and Constance L. Sauers, all of Mifflinburg; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Edna P. Boop, Howard A. Haines, Charles A. Haines, Mamie S. Gilbert, Raymond P. Haines and Celesta A. Dauberman. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He retired in 1983 from Machine Shop 1, Standard Steel, Burnham and had previously been employed at New Holland, Belleville. He had worked with Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in the state of Washington. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Arthur W. Paige officiating. Interment will be in the New Lancaster Valley Cemetery, Milroy. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
WASHINGTON, DC - Margaret Mary Haley, 74, of Washington, DC, formerly of Lewistown, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, DC. Born May 14, 1926, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Duffy) Haley. She was the last her immediate family. She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Haley. She graduated in 1945 from Lewistown High School. She was recruited by the federal government to work in Washington after graduation. She was employed by the Department of Treasury and later transferred to the Federal Housing Administration which became part of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, until her retirement on Feb. 3, 1983. She then worked part-time for the American Banking Associations until retiring to care for her sister in Enola, Pa. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the chapel of the Oblate Sisters of the Most Holy Eucharist in Washington, DC. A graveside service and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7 with the Rev. Father Thomas Marickovic officiating at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church Cemetery at Third and Dorcas Streets, Lewistown.
MIFFLIN - Roberta J. Hall, 69, of Star Route, Mifflin, died at 2:49 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born July 27, 1931, in Alfarata, she was a daughter of the late Robert Fenton and Margaret Jane (Lepley) Berryhill. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Charles (Jane) Heimbach, McAlisterville, Stanley E. Hall Jr., Mifflin, Margaret Ann Springer, New Cumberland, Robert Lee Hall, Mifflin, Donald C. Hall, Mifflin; a granddaughter, Tiffany Hall, Mifflin, whom she reared; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother. She was a member of the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, where she was superintendent of the children's department and a Sunday School teacher. She was vice president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Mifflin Fire Company, leader of the Mifflinettes marching group and a life member of the Decatur Fire Company. She was avid fan of the Port Royal Speedway and racer Todd Shaffer. Her funeral service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Edward M. Trask officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
