Sarah C. Hockenbrock
Sarah C. Hockenbrock, 88, formerly of East Salem, died at 3:10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1, where she had been a resident since 1996. Born June 5, 1913, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Sue C. (Mangle) Blystone. Her husband, Clarence E. Hockenbrock, whom she married Jan. 12, 1935, died Dec. 10, 1991. Surviving are: three daughters, E. Sue Eargle, Thompsontown, Anna Mae Horwhat, Harrisburg and Catherine S. Clark, Mifflintown RR4; a son, C. Robert Hockenbrock, Richfield RR1; 11 grandchildren, l 8 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean E. Hockenbrock; a grandson, Steve Hockenbrock; six brothers and three sisters. She attended Mifflintown High School. She was self-employed as an Avon representative and was employed by the Juniata County School District as the head cook for the Delaware Township Elementary School, Thompsontown. She was a member of the East Salem United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women's Society and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Delaware Township Fire Company Auxiliary and the East Salem Community Club. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and reading. Her funeral service will be held on Monday, Oct. 15, in the East Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. JoAnn Darrow officiating. Interment will follow in the East Salem Cemetery. A viewing will be held 4-9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, where the family will be present from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: the East Salem United Methodist Church-Building Fund, RR 2, Box 1170, Mifflintown, PA 17059 or to a charity of one's choice.

Betty L. Hoffman
HUNTINGDON - Betty L. Hoffman, 76, of 107 S. Eleventh St., Huntingdon, died at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at her home. Born July 22, 1924, in Saxton, she was the daughter of the late Albert J. and Pauline (Price) Hollingshead. Her first husband, John R. Quinn, died July 31, 1969 and her second husband, Robert H. Hoffman, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. David (Sandy) Hollingshead, Belleville and Robert Stephen Quinn, Huntingdon RR3; stepson, Robert H. Hoffman Jr., Saltillo; brother and sister, Albert J. Hollingshead Jr., Ohio and Mrs. John (Jean) Suter, Elyria, Ohio; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Chris David Hollingshead, and one brother, Robert H. Hollingshead. She was employed by the Arrow Shirt Factory in Huntingdon for over 20 years. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Huntingdon and the Standing Stone Senior Citizens. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. James L. Blair officiating. Interment will be in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon RR1. There will be no viewing. Carl E. Hoffman
MCCLURE - Carl E. Hoffman, 59, of 720 Hoffman Rd., McClure, died at 6 p.m. Friday, at his residence. Born June 26, 1942, in Mifflin County, he was the son of the late Emmet and Beulah (Bowersox) Hoffman. His wife, Sheila M. (Dunkleberger) Hoffman, whom he married May 5, 1963, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Laurie Aurand, McVeytown, Paula Hoffman, Lewistown, and Annette Shreve, Hampton, VA; brothers and a sister, Cliff Hoffman, York, Gertrude Knouse, Lewistown, Jackie Hoffman, McClure, and Sandra Mellott, Lewistown; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a brother. He was a Furnace Operator at Standard Steel, Burnham, for 38 years, and also farmed. He was a member of Samuel's United Church of Christ, United Steelworker's Local #1940, and the Holstein Association. He loved his Belgian horses. His funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Dean Bobb officiating. Interment will be in Samuel's Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorial's may be made to: American Diabetes Association, 3544 N. James W. 'Jim' Hoffman
HENDERSON, Nev. - James W. "Jim" Hoffman, 66, of 1822 Tiger Creek Ave., Henderson, Nev., died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at his home. Born April 4, 1934, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late James M. Hoffman and Viola (Langham) Olson. His wife of 43 years, Loretta Hoffman of Henderson, Nev., survives. Also surviving are: children, Lisa Ann Hoffman, Canton, Mass. and Greg Hoffman, Las Vegas, Nev.; sister and brothers, Edith Defoe, Wilmington, Del., John A. "Jack" Olson, Rittman, Ohio, Lindsley R. "Lin" Olson, Alloway, NJ, and Norman Olson, Lewistown. He was preceded in death by stepfather, John A. Olson. He was a 1961 graduate of Penn State University. He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired industrial arts teacher, having taught in Wall Township, NJ and in Henderson, Nev. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Henderson, Nev. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Henderson, Nev. Interment will be in Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City, Nev., with military honors conducted by Naval Honor Guards. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, Southwest Division Inc., 1325 E. Harmon St., Las Vegas, Nev. 89119. Palm Mortuary-Eastern, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, Nev., is in charge of arrangements.

Betty J. Hollister
REEDSVILLE - Betty J. Hollister, 79, of 88 Church Lane, Reedsville, died at 11:16 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville. Born Aug. 21, 1921, in Reedsville, she was the daughter of the late Robert Morris Sr. and Anna M. (Gentzel) Gordon. Her husband, Raymond H. Hollister, died June 24, 2000. Surviving are: children, Thomas G. Okulczyk, Rockwood, TN and Jane A. Hollister, Reedsville; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Elwood Gordon and Robert M. Gordon Jr. She was a 1939 graduate of Reedsville High School. She was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. She was a beautician and also operated a deli in Chicago from 1947-1962. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown and the Lewistown Women's Club. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bohn Funeral Home, 55 N. Main St., Reedsville, with the Rev. David W. Schmuck officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Elizabeth H. Holt
MCALISTERVILLE - Elizabeth H. Holt, 94, of McAlisterville, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, in the Brookline Manor Convalescent Home, Mifflintown RR1. Born in East Bangor, on Dec. 9, 1906, she was a daughter of the late Richard Fair and Margaret Della (Roberts) Howell. Her husband, Herman W. "Jack" Holt, whom she married June 5, 1930, died Dec. 14, 1996. Surviving are: two daughters, Shirley E. Kinsey, Laporte and Marcia H. Thompson, McAlisterville; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. She graduated from Bangor High School, Bangor in 1925 and Ursinus College, Collegeville in l929 with a teaching degree. She was a homemaker most of her life, but had taught in several schools in Massachusetts. She was a trustee for the Pembroke Public Library, Pembroke, MA and helped organize and was the first president of the Lydia Drake Library Association, a branch of the Pembroke Public Library. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Mexico, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She was also Past Regent and news correspondent for the General Thomas Mifflin Chapter of the D.A.R., a member of the McAlisterville Women's Club, Juniata County Chorus, Lewistown Art League and the Juniata County Historical Society. She enjoyed craft painting. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Presbyterian Church, Mexico, with the Rev. James F. Cranston officiating. Interment will be in the Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, McAlisterville. Viewing will be held 4-9 p.m. Thursday, at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, where the family will be present from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: the United Presbyterian Church, PO Box 202, Mexico, PA 17056 or to a charity of one's choice.

Cora Esther Hood
THOMPSONTOWN - Cora Esther Hood, 73, of RR1 Thompsontown, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at the Harrisburg Hospital. Born Nov. 25, 1927, in Fayette Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Cloyd E. and Sarah Rebecca (Miller) Yorks. Her husband Merrill S. Hood, whom she married Nov. 9, 1947, survives. Also surviving are: children, Gloria J. Wentz, Millerstown RD, M. Edwin Hood, Paul A. Hood, and Eileen J. Colyer, all of RR1 Thompsontown; two brothers, Blair Yorks, Thompsontown, Clair Yorks, Chambersburg, and two sisters, Anna Haas, Freeburg, and Arlene Burdge, Chambersburg; five grandchildren, Kristie Davis, Susan Williamson, Natalie Hood, Joshua Hood, Rebecca Colyer, and one great-grandson, Wesley Williamson. She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Jay Yorks, John Yorks, Ben Yorks, Foster Yorks, Frank Yorks, Ross Yorks, Lloyd Yorks and Carl Yorks. She was a seamstress for and worked for the Blough Wagner Factory, Millerstown, Shellenberger & Sons Garment Factory, McAlisterville, and retired from Lyons Fashions, Millerstown. She was a member of the McAlisterville United Methodist Church and it's Sunday School and she had also served on the nominating committee. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the McAlisterville Chapel of the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 16 Westfall Street, McAlisterville, with the Rev. Dr. Karl R. Herman officiating. Burial will be in Goodwill Cemetery, McAlisterville. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Sunday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to: McAlisterville United Methodist Church, RR1, Box 792, Mifflintown, Pa 17059, or to the Kidney Foundation of Central PA, 208 Oak St., Harrisburg, Pa 17109.

Maxwell L. 'Max' Hook
LEWISTOWN - Maxwell L. "Max" Hook, 75, of 15 Glenlew Drive, Lewistown, died at 10 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2001 at his residence. Born June 27, 1925 in Burnham, he was a son of the late Clayton T. and Sara ( Lauver) Hook Kearns. His first wife June S. (Schroeder) Hook preceded him in death on July 19, 1986. His second wife Freda (Beal) Hook, whom he married Sept. 30, 1989, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Leslie (Janet) Mansir, Plano, TX, Frederick R. Hook, Hopewell, David M. Hook, Irving, TX, Mark S. Sievers, Tyrone and Mrs. Daryl (Karen) May, Memphis, TN; a sister and step-brother, Mrs. James (Barbara) Aurand, 1385 Big Ridge Road, Lewistown and Donald C. Kearns, Whispering Pines, NC; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by step-brother John W. Kearns. He was a 1943 graduate of Yeagertown High School. He was a retired farmer. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown, where he was active on various committees. He was the 1985 recipient of the Roundtable of Christian and Jews Brotherhood Award. He was a member of the Lewistown Kiwanis Club, served on the planning commission of Derry Township, and touched the lives of many Mifflin County residents by serving on boards and with organizations too numerous to list. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Gerald A. Krum officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Sunday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, and from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of the funeral at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044, or to the charity of one's choice.
