Harold L. Hoverter, 74, of Berry's Personal Care Center, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Thompsontown, died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 29, 1926, in McAlisterville, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Lee Norman and Myrtle Ellen (Swartz) Hoverter. He is survived by his wife, Doris B. "Dot" (Bowen) Hoverter of 26 W. Market St., Lewistown. Also surviving are: four daughters, Fay Rumberger, Millerstown, Patsy Crawford, Honey Grove, Mary Ziegler, Cocolamus, and Betty Imes, Thompsontown; one stepson, Alfred Jamison, McAlisterville; one stepdaughter, Vivian Hutzel, New Bloomfield; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Fay Haines. He was last employed by Regester Chevrolet, Thompsontown and prior to that he had worked at Benner's Orchard, Benner's Restaurant, Thompsontown and Empire Kosher Poultry Inc., Mifflintown. He was a member of the Tuscarora Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed walking in the outdoors. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Charles A. Sheaffer officiating. Interment will follow in the Maze Cemetery, Thompsontown RR1. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
READING - Daniel R. Howell, 34, of 173 W. Oley St., Reading, died Oct. 23, 2001, at his residence. Born in McComb, MS, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Sarah C. (Cox) Howell Sr. Surviving are: a son, Daniel R. Howell Jr., McComb, MS; four brothers, Charles Howell, Lewistown, James Howell, McVeytown, Alfred Howell, Lewistown and William Howell, Texas; three sisters, Debra Toullier, Louisiana, Jennie McKey, Mississippi and Myrtice Tucker, Maryland. He was employed as a general laborer. Services will be held at the family's convenience. Henninger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
LEWISTOWN - Frances S. Hower, 86, of Kish Apts., S. Main St., Lewistown, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001 at Locust Grove, Mifflin. Born April 17, 1915, in Mifflin County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Yeatter) Hockenbrock. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ross Shahan and her second husband, Ralph Hower. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Ellen) Kline, Fogelsville; stepdaughter, Thelma Lauver, Port Royal; a brother, Elsworth Hockenbrock, Lewistown; half-sister, Betty Reynolds, Mexico; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three brothers. She had worked in the cafeteria at the Arrow Shirt Factory and at the lunch counter at Murphy's 5 & 10. She was a member of Calvary Bible Church. Her service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Howard Houtz officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home. Family will provide all flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to: Calvary Bible Church Building Fund, 301 S. Pine St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
MCALISTERVILLE - George M. "Max" Hower, 80, of McAlisterville RR2, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin. Born Aug. 14, 1920, in Perulack, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Charles and Effie (Goshorn) Hower. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (McLucas) Hower, whom he married on July 11, 1950. Also surviving are: children, Sharon A. Hower and Steven G. Hower, both of McAlisterville; brothers and sisters, Melvin Hower, Duncannon, Donald Hower, Mifflintown RD, Larry Hower, Mifflintown RD, Dorothy Sankey, McAlisterville, and Mrs. Ray (Helen) Dysinger, Thompsontown. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Hower, and two sisters, Lillian Gross and Mary Winey. Early in life, he worked at American Viscose Corp. as a mechanic for 25 years and was last employed at Standard Steel as a burner for 12 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Mifflintown RR1 and the United Steel Workers of America Local 1940. He was also an avid outdoorsman and steam train enthusiast. His funeral service is at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Mifflintown RR1, with the Rev. Karl L. Herman officiating. Interment will be in Goodwill Cemetery, Bunkertown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the service Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Box 792, Mifflintown RR1, PA 17059 or the charity of one's choice. FORT MYERS, Fla. - Leona Rebecca Hudson, 62, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at her home. Born Sept. 14, 1938, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late William John and Katherine Claudine (Hess) Larson. Her husband, Darrell Gene Hudson, survives. Also surviving are: children, Kimbra Jerina, Lake Bluff, Ill. and Christopher Eric Hudson, Fort Myers, Fla.; brothers and sisters, William J. Larson, Katherine C. Laub, and Arthur L. Larson, all of Lewistown, Gerald F. Larson, Augusta, Ga., Larry L. Larson, Fort Myers, Fla., and DyAnn K. Wilson, Rockwood, Tenn.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Leona Rebecca, in 1961. She was a 1956 graduate of Lewistown High School. She was employed as a telephone operator for 30 years. She was Methodist by faith. Services were held Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Kiser Funeral Chapel, Fort Myers, Fla. Interment was in the Lee Memorial Park, Lehigh Acres, Fla. BELLEVILLE - M. Olive Hummel, 95, of Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville, formerly of First Avenue, Burnham, died at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Valley View Retirement Community. Born Aug. 2, 1905, in Derry Township, Mifflin County, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Ida M. (Zook) Hummel. She is survived by one nephew. She was a supervisor in the cake converting department of the American Viscose Corporation Division of FMC for 34 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Burnham Church of the Brethren, where she taught Sabbath Sunday School for 50 years. She served as secretary of the church for 35 years and was a member of the Women's Organization of the Church, the Deacon Commission of the Church Board, the Morrison Cove Home Women's Auxiliary, Martinsburg and the Foreladies Club of the American Viscose. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Burnham Church of the Brethren, 541 E. Freedom Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Wayne W. Mast officiating. Interment will be in the Maitland Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. LEWISTOWN - Thomas D. Hummel, 77, of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown, formerly of Reedsville, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at the nursing home. Born July 10, 1923, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late James T. and Esther E. (Miller) Hummel. His wife, Lena V. (Mitchell) Hummel, died Jan. 17, 1984. He is survived by a sister, Anna Holley, Abbabille, AL and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Hudson and a brother, Joseph E. Hummel. He was a united States Navy veteran of World War II, having served on vessels in the Pacific, European/African/Middle East areas. He was employed 40 years with The Sentinel, Lewistown, retiring in 1986. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Lewistown Elks Lodge. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville, with Father Thomas C. Marickovic officiating. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown. There will be no viewing. Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, is in charge of arrangements.
MCCLURE - Wilmer H. Hummel, 75, of 25 Hummel Lane, McClure, died at 3:46 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born April 4, 1926, in McAlisterville, he was the son of the late Lloyd S. and Blanche A. (Frymoyer) Hummel. His wife, Loretta (McCartle) Hummel, whom he married in January of 1971, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Michael (Sandra) Finleon, San Antonio, TX, Mrs. Robert (Fay) Stine, Earl R. Hummel and Brian K. Hummel, all of Lewistown, Harold L. Hummel, McClure, and Mrs. Mark (Wilma) Reese, Lancaster; stepchildren, Mrs. Chris (Cathy) Stank, Baltimore, MD, Jackie Kline, Highpoint, NC and Scott Kline, Mechanicsburg; brother and sister, C. Richard Hummel, Lewistown and Mrs. Lee (Jeretta) George, Pennsville, NJ; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Erla Scanlan. He was a self-employed truck driver from 1944-1972 and owner of Hummel's Used Cars from 1972 to the present. He attended Mt. View Mennonite Chapel, Reedsville. He was a member of the Lewistown Moose Lodge 143 and Lewistown VFW Post 7011. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with Pastor Lester Diller officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
