MIFFLINTOWN - Helen R. Kauffman, 88, of Mifflintown RR3, died at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC 67, Mifflin. Born Nov. 18, 1912, in Milford Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late David K. and Florence I. (Bossinger) Kauffman. She is survived by sisters and brothers, Marian K. Stetler, Esther K. Cramer, and B. Donald Kauffman, all of Mifflintown RR3, W.A. "Bud" Kauffman, Okeechobee, Fla., and Richard E. Kauffman, Mifflintown RR1. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Sterrett, Irene Ernest, and Iva Beward and an infant brother, Fredrick Kauffman. She was a graduate of Mifflintown High School. She was a retired secretary. She was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Licking Creek Valley, the Milford Grange 773, and the Mifflin Chapter 260, Order of the Eastern Star. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR3, with the Rev. Louise Knotts officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to: Friends of Locust Grove, HC 67, Mifflin, PA 17058. Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.
MILROY - John R. Kauffman, 59, of 104 Creek Drive, Milroy, died at 4:57 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital Emergency Room. Born Feb. 5, 1942, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Leonard Alvin and Willa Mae (Kurtz) Kauffman. Surviving are: a sister, Mrs. Melvin (Joan) Romig, Naginey, and a brother, Thomas A. Kauffman, Lewistown. He was preceded in death by brothers, Fred L. Kauffman, Guy E. Kauffman, Ned H. Kauffman, Sr. He was a 1959 graduate of Kishacoquillas High School and had worked at Marlette Homes. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the Milroy American Legion, a member of the Shrader United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing in Canada with his family. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. L. Ed Moore officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy. LEWISTOWN - Charlotte D. Kearns, 97, a resident of Ohesson Manor, Lewistown, formerly of 915 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the manor. Born April 30, 1904, in Granville Township, she was the daughter of the late Forrest B. McCord and Maude (Swartz) McCord Soles. Her first husband, Clarence Lyter, died in 1936; her second husband, William Cavanaugh, died in 1970; and her third husband, Paul Kearns, died in 1982. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jean E.) Peck, 20 Tranquil Drive, Lewistown; stepchildren, Mrs. Robert (Phyllis) Dove, Kearneysville, WV, Mrs. Harold (Donna) Carolus, McVeytown RR, Richard E. Kratzer, Lewistown and James Kratzer, Connecticut; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert E. Lyter, one step-grandson and two sisters. Early in life, she worked at the American Viscose Corp. and owned and operated Lyter's Grocery Store, Glenwood until 1950. She was then a sales representative for Stanley Home and Amway Products. She was a member of Lake Park UMC and the Ladies Bible Class. Her service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Mark S. Brower officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call 6:30 p.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lake Park UMC, 78 Sugar Tree Lane, Lewistown, PA 17044.
LEWISTOWN - Shirley J. Kearns, 69, of Back Maitland Road, Lewistown, died at 10:25 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 3, 1931, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Charles C. and Catherine (Cutler) Kearns. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Walter (Colleen) Collins, 4338 E. Main St., Belleville and one nephew. She was a 1949 graduate of Lewistown High School. She was employed at Community Consumer Finance, Lewistown, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Lewistown and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Dale Hippensteel officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to: Grace United Methodist Church, 101 Logan St., Lewistown, PA 17044. WEST CHESTER - Mary M. Keefer, 83, of 828 Paoli Pike, West Chester, died at 7:17 p.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Brandywine Hall, 800 W. Miner St., West Chester. Born July 11, 1917, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late George and Cora A. (Steininger) Mason. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Keefer. She was the last of her immediate family. She was employed as a secretary to the Lewistown Area School District Superintendent of Schools and retired as a secretary from Sullivan Auto Parts, Elverson. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, West Chester. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1200 Phoenixville Pike, West Chester. Interment will be private at Mt. Rock Cemetery. MIFFLIN - Betty M. Keiser, 77, of Mifflin HC 67 (Nook) died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born June 16, 1924, in Mifflin, she was a daughter of the late John G. and Emma M. (Lebkicher) Foltz. Her husband, CDR G. Robert Keiser USN retired, whom she married on Sept. 23, 1945, survives. Also surviving are: children, Kim Keiser, Mechanicsburg, and LT Robert K. Keiser, Bowie, MD; and and two grandchildren, Robert S. and Sarah E. Keiser. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Lou Foltz, Helen B. Clark and Jessie F. Partner, and one brother, John M. Foltz. She was a 1942 graduate of Juniata Joint High School and a 1945 graduate of the Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nook, and the Lewistown Hospital Nurse's Association. Her service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Marton J. Roberson officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Nook. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 337, Mifflin, PA 17058.
COLUMBUS GROVE, OH - Ernest R. Keiser, 89, of Columbus Grove, OH died at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, at his residence. Born June 8, 1911 in Reedsville, he was a son of the late Roy C. and Hazel A. (Frankhouser) Keiser. His wife, Mary M. (Smith) Keiser, whom he married Sept. 1, 1935, preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 1983. Surviving are: a companion, Evelyn Lyon, Bluffton, OH; brothers and a sister, Dean Keiser, Columbus Grove, OH and Leon Keiser and Virgie Mitchell, both of Reedsville, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Eldon Keiser, Marlin Keiser, Sherwood Keiser, Marshall Keiser, Ronnie Keiser, Alberta Breon, Patsy Kyper and Audrey Keiser. He was a self-employed dairy hauler. He was a member of the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Bluffton, OH. He was also a member of the Bluffton Senior Citizens and the National Rifle Association. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Bluffton, OH, with the Rev. John Mummert and the Rev. George Klinefelter officiating. Interment will be in Rockport Cemetery. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Chiles & Sons-Laman Funeral Homes, 239 S. Main St., Bluffton, OH. ENOLA - Jeanne Ann Keisling, 51, of 823 Magaro Road, Enola, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in the Harrisburg Hospital. Born June 20, 1949, in Juniata County, she was the daughter of Gladys (Goodling) Hoffman of McAlisterville RR1 and the late Earl Hoffman. Her husband, Larry Donald Keisling, whom she married July 26, 1969, survives. Also surviving are: children, Sean L. Keisling, at home and Holly R. Keisling, Camp Hill; and a brother and a sister, Roger Hoffman, Richfield RR1 and Linda Hoffman, McAlisterville. She was a 1967 graduate of East Juniata High School. She was employed as a supervisor for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Motor Vehicles Division), Harrisburg, from 1967 until Jan. 16, 2001, retiring due to illness. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Millerstown RR2, where she served on the church council and as the council's secretary. She was also a member of AFSME Union, Harrisburg. She was a golf enthusiast, enjoyed bowling and was an avid bingo player. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Faith Lutheran Church, Millerstown RR2, with the Rev. Timothy W. Bingman officiating. Interment will be in the church Cemetery. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills, after which the casket will be closed. There will be no viewing at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society-Capital Region Unit, 1500 N. Second St., Harrisburg, PA 17102.
