BURNHAM - Doris M. Leonard, 89, formerly of Burnham, died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born Dec. 2, 1911, in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Annie (Kiester) Nipple. Her husband, George E. Leonard, preceded her in death in 1995. Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Linda) Snyder, Knepp Avenue, Lewistown and Mrs. Jack (Marjorie) Zimmerman, 829 Dry Valley Road, Lewistown; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, a son, a grandson and two great-grandsons. She was employed as a nurse's aide for 22 years at Lewistown Hospital, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lewistown. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Interment will be in Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, McAlisterville. Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.
CHAMBERSBURG - Leslie H. Leonard, 84, a resident of the Menno Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg, formerly of Lewistown and Traverse City, MI, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg. Born Sept. 5, 1916, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Lawrence B. and Pearl (Hersh) Leonard. His wife, Iva (Smith) Leonard, whom he married Oct. 1, 1937, survives. Also surviving are: sons, John Brady Leonard, Mancelona, MI and James Leroy Leonard, Spring City; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, one half-brother and one half-sister. He was a carpenter. He was a member of the Cherry Blossom Mennonite Church, Traverse City, MI. Services will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home Ltd., 725 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, with the Rev. Lester Otto and the Rev. Sam Troyer officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call 6 p.m. until the time of the service Sunday at the funeral home.
PORT ROYAL - Lewis A. Leonard, 74, of Port Royal RR2, died at 2:56 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Oct. 12, 1926, in Granville Township, Mifflin County, he was the son of the late Thomas P. and Grace M. (Gill) Leonard. His wife, Alma J. (Isenberg) Leonard of Port Royal RR2, whom he married Oct. 4, 1958, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Dwaine (Susan) Brown, Port Royal; sisters, Mrs. William (Maxine) Swartz and Minnie Arlene Leonard, both of Mifflintown RR2; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Leonard and one stepbrother, Thomas Weimer. He was a retired sorter for Juniata Garment Company, Mifflin. He had also worked for the former Rae-Sel Corporation, Port Royal. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Mifflintown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Pastor Ronald L. Shupe officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. A closed casket visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the First Baptist Church, HC-63, Box 54A, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
MILLERSTOWN - Melvin E. "George" Leonard, 21, of Millerstown RR2, Monroe Township, Juniata County, died Friday evening at Lewistown Hospital, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Route 235, McAlisterville. Born Jan. 24, 1980, in Harrisburg, he was the son of Wannetta K. (Strawser) Leonard of Honey Grove and Francis R. Leonard of Harrisburg. His wife, the former Joanne L. Seiders, whom he married on Aug. 25, 2000, survives. Also surviving are: brother and sister, Sherman F. Leonard and Marlena F. Leonard, both of Honey Grove; his mother's companion, Ray E. Coughlin; maternal grandfather, Sherman L. Strawser, Millerstown RR2; mother-in-law, Linda Seiders of Florida; father-in-law, Gary Seiders of Marysville; Jennifer Patton of Lewistown, who was like a sister to Mel; godson, Tony Yeater Jr., son of close friends Jackie (Arbogast) and Tony Yeater Sr. of McAlisterville; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Alice Marie Strawser, and paternal grandparents, Jack and Regina Leonard. He was educated at East Juniata High School, Manheim Central High School in Lancaster and Juniata High School and was employed at Triangle Pacific Cabinets Corp., Thompsontown RR1, where he worked in the mailroom as an assembler. He attended the Church of the Open Door, Richfield RR1. He loved his family and was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing, motorcross racing and NASCAR, especially the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. and then Dale Earnhardt Jr. His funeral service is at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Mills, with the Rev. George A. Swartz officiating. Interment will be in Neimond's Cemetery, Richfield RR1. There will be no viewing. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 1 p.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made through the local American Red Cross chapters for the National Disaster Relief Fund.
LEWISTOWN - Albert L. Lepley, 99, of 3708 Back Maitland Road, Lewistown, died at 2:05 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born May 12, 1902, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Elsie (Lowrie) Lepley. His first wife, Verna (Smith) Lepley, died in 1949 and his second wife, Margaret M. (Smith) Lepley, died May 26, 1980. Surviving are: sons, William R. Lepley, Alfarata Road, Lewistown and Charles A. Lepley, US Highway Route 522 N, Lewistown; a sister, Ruth Houser, Burgard Apartments, Lewistown; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel L. Lepley. He was a self-employed farmer and also worked for the American Viscose Corporation and Logan Iron and Steel and then for Standard Steel for a total of 15 years. He was a member of Calvary Bible Church, Lewistown and the Alfarata Lions Club. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Howard D. Houtz officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: Calvary Bible Church, 301 S. BEAVER SPRINGS - Florence E. Lepley, 85, of Beaver Springs, died at 10:16 p.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 27, 1916, in Centre Township, Snyder County, she was the daughter of the late Claire M. and Hattie M. (Musser) Walter. Her husband, John M. Lepley, whom she married March 2, 1935, died in 1956. She is survived by children, Mrs. Dale (Shirley) Bishop and Paul Lepley, both of Beaver Springs RR1; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She worked on the family farm till the 1970s, at the former Snook's Restaurant, and the former Beavertown Weaving Mill, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Beaver Lutheran Church, Beaver Springs and the ladies auxiliary of the Beaver Springs Fire Company. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing Rummycube. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Adamsburg Cemetery, Beaver Springs, with the Rev. Stanley D. Reep officiating. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Beaver Lutheran Church, PO Box 167, Beaver Springs, PA 17812.
MCCLURE - Gerald M. Lepley, 91, of McClure RR1, died at 2:08 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born July 13, 1909, in Burnham, he was the son of the late Homer H. and Eva (Deamer) Lepley. His wife, Gertrude " Sity" (Stumpff) Lepley, died Nov. 1, 1999. He is survived by a brother and sister, Alden D. Lepley, Kalamazoo, Mich. and Mrs. Anthony (Ruby) Burscia, Sun Lakes, Ariz.; one grandchild and one great-grandchild; five step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Hook, one granddaughter, Rosalie Trout and an infant sister . He was a reporter and wire editor for The Sentinel, Lewistown for 25 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Alfarata. He was also the first coordinator of the Mifflin County Senior Citizen's Center; organized and directed the Alfarata Men's Chorus for 50 years; gag writer for various cartoonists nationally; District Two Sunday School Youth Choir Director; charter member of the Alfarata Lions Club; charter member of the Decatur Fire Company; a member of the United Commercial Travelers and the Mifflin County Historical Society. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Clyde B. Singh officiating. Interment will be in Alfarata Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 573 Alfarata Road, Lewistown, PA 17044 or to the charity of one's choice.
LEWISTOWN - Nina B. Leshock, 87, formerly of Lake Wood, NJ, died at 9:47 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 23, 1913, in New York City, NY, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Pauline (Baranov) Bazukevitch. Her husband, Alexander D. Leshock Sr., died April 2, 1969. Surviving are a sister, Mary B. Major of Lewistown; a niece, Mrs. Daniel (Karen) Doberneck of Lewistown and a nephew, C. Harvey Major, Ellicott, MD. She was preceded in death by two sons, Alexander J. Leshock Jr. and Dennis J. Leshock and two grandsons. She was a bookkeeper for Worthington Office Equipment and Paul Kimball Medical Center; sales clerk for a drug store; and bookkeeper at St. Mary's Hospital, Hoboken, New York City. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Lewistown. Her service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, with Father Lawrence Coakley and Karen McCachren officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, NJ. Friends may call 12:30-1:30 p.m. today at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown.
