BELLEVILLE - Harry P. Metz, 82, of 27 Mohawk Road, Belleville, died at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at his home. Born Sept. 12, 1918, in Airydale, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Hazel (Huey) Metz. His first wife, Alice (Waddill) Metz, died Feb. 20, 1989. His second wife, Jemima "Jimmie" (Holmes) Metz of 27 Mohawk Road, Belleville, survives. He is also survived by: children, Mrs. Jerry (Susan) McCartney, Lewistown, Mrs. John (Molly) Bourg, Reedsville and Dr. Charles J. Metz, St. Louis, Mo.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert K. Metz Sr. on June 27, 1990. He was a graduate of the Menno-Union High School and the Harrisburg Academy. He also graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in chemistry. After graduating, he was employed by the Atlas Powder Company and continued to work in California until going into the Navy, where he served as a communication officer on the staff of the First Carrier Task Force of the Pacific. He became an active member of the Metz Poultry Farms in 1946 and started the Metz Hatchery in 1948, where he was president and manager until his retirement in 1983. He was a partner in Metz Farms; a partner in WCHX radio station; a director of the Pennsylvania State Poultry Federation; director and president of the North Eastern Poultry Council; a director and president of Producers Co-op in Coatesville and Warminster. He was selected as the Poultryman of the Year in 1972 by the Pennsylvania Poultry Federation. He was a former school board director of Menno Union School District; a director on the Mifflin County School Board; served as a trustee and secretary of the Lewistown Hospital; and was a director, president and then chairman of the board of the Kishacoquillas Valley National Bank; served as a director of Nationwide Insurance Company from 1975-1984; was a township supervisor for Union Township and chairman for 1994; and was a trustee, secretary and elder of the West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church in Belleville. He was also a member of the Lewistown Rotary Club, Lewistown Country Club, Gettis Ridge Rod and Gun Club, Elks Club, VFW of Belleville, F&AM Lodge in McVeytown, Harrisburg Consistory, Altoona Shrine and Mifflin County Shrine Club. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church, Belleville, with the Rev. Samuel Strohm, officiating. Interment will be in Machpelah Cemetery, Belleville. Friends may call 6:30-9 p.m. today at Baggus Funeral Home, Belleville. BELLEVILLE - Helen M. Metz, 91, a resident of Valley View Retirement Home, 4702 E. Main St., Belleville, formerly of 65 River Corner Road, Conestoga, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the home. Born Oct. 8, 1909, in Port Royal, she was the daughter of the late Aquilla and Blance Meminger. Her husband, John B. Metz, died in 1999. She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Larry (Peggy) Schlegelmilch, Conestoga and Mrs. Barry (Judy) Charles, Petersburg; three grandsons and two great-granddaughters. She was a graduate of Lancaster Business School. She was a housewife. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lancaster and a former member of the Women's Circle of the church. She was also a member of the Farm Women's Society No. 25. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, corner of North Queen and James streets, Lancaster, with the Rev. E. W. Huston officiating. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park. Friends may call 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valley View Retirement Home, Helen M. Metz Memorial Fund, 4702 E. Main St., Belleville, PA 17004. The Kearney A. REEDSVILLE - Rev. O. C. Metzger, 91, of 63 Overhill Road, Reedsville, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born June 14, 1909, in Altoona, he was the son of the late Rev. J. A. and Blanche (Edgar) Metzger. His wife, Dorothy (Mount) Metzger, whom he married June 11, 1938, survives. Also surviving are: children, the Rev. Carl E. Metzger, Philadelphia and Mrs. Walter (Virginia) Malcolm, 315 Holiday Lane, Lewistown; sisters, Ruth Umstead and Eunice Harm, both of Aiken, SC, and Grace McCloskey, Skelp; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. He graduated from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1938 and from Geneva College, Beaver Falls. He retired from active ministry in 1974, having served as pastor of the First Baptist Church, Lewistown and as interim pastor in Milroy, Mount Union, and Blanchard. He founded Allegheny Valley Baptist Church, Natrona Heights and served numerous Baptist churches in Pennsylvania over his ministerial career. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lewistown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Lewistown, with the Rev. Carl E. Metzger, the Rev. Jeffrey D. McCleary and the Rev. James E. Hughes officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church. Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
YEAGERTOWN - Dorothy G. "Candy" Michael, 45, of 312 N. Main St., Yeagertown, died at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 25, 1956, in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of Clair Rhodes and Gail Fultz, both of Lewistown. Her husband, Walter M. Michael Jr., whom she married Aug. 25, 1993, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Dallas G. Rhodes, at home; stepdaughter, Christina M. Michael, McClure; a brother, Larry Rhodes, McClure; half brothers and sisters, Mrs. Charles (Connie) Reigle, Reedsville, Robert Herrington and Mrs. James (Hazel) Foltz, both of Lewistown and Mrs. John (Christine) Foltz, Aaronsburg. She was a nurse's aide for the Area Agency on Aging and private duty. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the North Shore Animal Shelter. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Juniata Memorial Park, with the Rev. John S. Walters officiating. There will be no viewing. Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
LEWISTOWN - Donald R. Mierley, 78, of 408 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at his residence. Born Jan. 4, 1923, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late John and Ethel (Reed) Mierley. His wife, Jean (Forgy) Mierley, whom he married in 1951, survives. Also surviving are: children, Dawn Mierley and Kimbra Mierley, both of Lewistown; and a grandson, Tony Mierley, Lewistown. He was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers. He was a US Army veteran of World War II. He worked at the American Viscose Corporation in the tire fabric department for 28 years and Masland Carpets for 10 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown. He was an avid fisherman. His service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. David Schmuck officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. MCVEYTOWN - Alice Mae Miller, 75, of 4 N. Market St., McVeytown, died at 5:16 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 25, 1925, in McVeytown, she was a daughter of the late Harry J. and Mary Jane (Collobine) Hambright. Her husband, Lester E. Miller, whom she married in 1948, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. David (Isabelle "Izzy") Felmlee, Sand Ridge Road, Lewistown; brothers and sisters, Charles Hambright of California, Russell Hambright and Jack Hambright, both of McVeytown, Marion J. Kline, Marjorie Goss and Vivian Haubrick, all of Lewistown; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, William Hambright, Joseph Hambright and James Hambright. She was employed by the Arrow Shirt Factory for 20 years and worked for the First Area Federal Credit Union for 15 years. She was a member of the McVeytown Presbyterian Church. She served as a board member of the First Area Federal Credit Union from 1974 to 1982. She was a member of the McVeytown Ambulance Company and served on the McVeytown Borough Council. Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Jeanette E. Rapp officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. BELLEFONTE - Anna E. Miller, 89, 925 W. Water St., Bellefonte, died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Centre Crest Nursing Home, Bellefonte. Born May 6, 1912, in Reedsville, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin R. and Clara (Harmon) Demaree. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel H. Miller, whom she married on May 7, 1936 in Milesburg, on Aug. 24, 1963. Surviving are: one brother, Frank Demaree of Petal, MS; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. She attended Reedsville schools and was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Bellefonte and former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Bellefonte Chapter. She did private duty nursing for many people in the area. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wetzler Funeral Home, Bellefonte, with the Rev. Robert D. Williams officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Bellefonte. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. MIFFLINTOWN - Betty Jane Miller, 74, of Berry's Personal Care, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Juniata Street, Mifflin, died at 2:11 a.m. Monday, May 28, 2001 in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 4, 1926 in Beale Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Tura (Hopple) Yocum. Her husband Chester R. Miller preceded her in death on March 4, 1994. She was the last of her immediate family. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, and also a life-member of Mifflin Fire Department No. 2. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with Rev. Douglas Kelly officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.
