LEWISTOWN - Dorothy L. Carr Phillips, 83, of Kish Apartments, 196 S. Main St., Lewistown, died at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at her residence. Born Nov. 18, 1917, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late John Robert and Lillian Mae (Leeper) Carr. Her husband, Albert L. Phillips, died in 1977. She is survived by children, William L. Phillips and Mrs. William (Patsy) Mackneer, both of Lewistown, Donald A. Phillips, Port Royal, Margaret M. Lundin and Mrs. Harold (Bonnie Kae) Sullivan, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; sisters, Mrs. Max (Betty) Wagner, Pemberton, NJ and Lillian Heimbaugh, Lewistown; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Dean Phillips in 1948, one brother and five sisters. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Lewistown Presbyterian Church and the ladies auxiliary of the Lewistown Moose Lodge. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Robert Zorn officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
LEWISTOWN - George R. Phillips, 78, of 705 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, died at 2:42 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born May 9, 1922, in Port Royal, he was the son of the late Dr. Robert Earl and Helen (McDonald) Phillips. His wife, Madeline (Hoffman) Phillips, died Oct. 5, 1999. Surviving are: a daughter, Helen Nina Phillips, 705 W. Fourth St., Lewistown; stepchildren, James Klinger, 705 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, Mrs. William (Joan) Gutshall, 2140 Vira Road, Lewistown, and Mrs. Floyd (Barbara) Bubb, Fairless Hills; eight step-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren. He attended Carson Long School in New Bloomfield and Lewistown High School. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was a machinist in the maintenance department at Standard Steel for 41 years, retiring in 1987. He was Methodist by faith. He was a member of the Lewistown Lodge 203 F&AM and the Fame Ambulance. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with Pastor Danny R. Neff officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Robert L. Phillips, 61, of McAlisterville RR2, died at 10:34 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in the Penn Lutheran Village, Selinsgrove, where he had been a resident since 1997. Born July 16, 1940, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Charles A. and Gladys I. (Tennis) Phillips. His wife, Doris I. (Harmon) Phillips, whom he married July 27, 1969, survives. Also surviving are: one son, Alan R. Phillips, McAlisterville RR2; a brother, Wayne L. Phillips, McAlisterville RR2; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Alfred. He attended Fayette High School, McAlisterville and East Juniata High School, Cocolamus. He was part owner of Phillips Orchard, McAlisterville and worked as a fruit grower for Maplelawn Associates, McAlisterville RR1. He was a Protestant by faith and enjoyed reading the Bible and hunting. His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Robert L. Zorn and the Rev. Kathleen M. Kinney officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville. Viewing will be 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where family will be present 7-9 p.m.
MILROY - S. Virginia "Ginny" Phillips, 74, of 107 Pine St., Milroy, died at 2:13 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 9, 1927, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Raymond E. and Irene J. (Fultz) Lewis. Her husband, Chester R. Phillips, whom she married on Oct. 18, 1947, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Carolyn I. "Cookie" Dillon, Milroy; two brothers, Raymond E. Lewis, Reedsville, and Robert E. Lewis, Milroy; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son on March 23, 1949. She was a 1947 graduate of Armagh Township High School. She was retired. She had previously worked as a waitress at the Eutaw House. Prior to that she worked at the Art Craft Shirt Co. and the Alert Shoe Co. She was a member of Shrader United Methodist Church and the Milroy Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Her service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. L. Ed Moore officiating. Interment will be in Old Salem Cemetery, Siglerville. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, 2790 W. TURBOTVILLE - Thomas Wendell Phillips, 82, of Turbotville, died Sunday, June 24, 2001. Born Nov. 3, 1918, in Turbotville, he was the son of the late Rev. Thomas and Florence (Miller) Phillips. His wife of 45 years, Roberta (Case) Phillips, died in 1991. In 1993, he married his second wife, Mary (Gipe) Phillips, who survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Randy "Patsy" Paul of San Jose, CA; stepchildren, Don Gipe, Denver, CO, Mrs. Lane (Susan) Little, Kanab, UT, and Mrs. Mark (Pam) Gebhardt, Tucson, AZ; two sisters, Virginia Harden and Letitia Wertz, both of Florida; two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters; eight step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was a 1941 graduate of Penn State. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Mediterranean Theatre. He was a professional engineer with a 35-year career in energy, aerospace and mining. He worked on Titan 1, building the butterfly valve on it; Titan 2 and Saturn 5 where he worked on the fuel tank and relief valve. He went into mining and was the engineer at Hecla Mine outside Casa Grande and later went with El Paso Gas in El Paso, TX. He had memberships in AIAA, Toastmasters, The Heritage Foundation, and several civic organizations. He was an active Republican and an accomplished artist, who loved music and helped put himself through the university by playing the saxophone in different professional bands. He was also a writer, having written many articles for publishing about the Casa Grande early years and settlements. He had a deep interest in anything scientific. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Casa de la Luz Hospice, Tucson, AZ 85704. The Adair Funeral Home, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave., Tucson, AZ, was in charge of arrangements.
LEWISTOWN - Charles H. Pierce Sr., 84, of Route 103 North, Lewistown, died at 2:08 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2001, at his residence. Born Nov. 15, 1916, in Granville, he was the son of the late Edward R. Sr. and Sarah Ellen (Watt) Pierce. His wife, Reatha E. Pierce, died Nov. 26, 1996. Surviving are: children, Charles Pierce, Lancaster and Mrs. Ronald (Gloria) Woodling, 9 Hennie Lane, Lewistown; sisters, Gladys Kearns, Milroy, Mrs. Warren (Rebecca) Stuler, Lumber City, Reedsville, and Mrs. James (Violet) Doughton, Mifflintown; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers. Early in life, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and retired in 1978 from Standard Steel, Burnham, with 36 years of service. He was a life member of the Granville Fire Company. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Michael Amedick and the Rev. Jacob Traxler officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana. Friends may call 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service Sunday at the funeral home. SOUTH YORK - Marlyn J. "Jake" Pierce, 73, of Springettsbury Township, died at 1:50 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services, South York. Born June 30, 1927, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late John Henry and Edith (Toyer) Pierce. His wife, Elizabeth (Brenan) Pierce, preceded him in death. Surviving are: children, Andrew C. Pierce, Erie, Tucker J. Pierce, Sinking Spring, and Megan A. Scheibner, Bath, ME; brothers, Donald T. Pierce, Lewistown and John Norman Pierce, Ely, MN; and 10 grandchildren. He was a 1947 graduate of Lewistown High School. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was production manager-sales and purchasing coordinator for the Mercer Paper Tube Corporation, retiring in 1992, with 22 years of service. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, York. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Calvary Baptist Church, 2740 Roosevelt Ave., York, with Pastor Gregory D. Wahlberg and Pastor Stephen P. Scheibner officiating. SUNBURY - Rev. David D. Plank, 46, of 340 N. Ninth St., Sunbury, died at 6:43 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in the Sunbury Community Hospital emergency room. Born March 29, 1955, in Gettysburg, he was the son of Dale and Thresa (Baker) Plank. He married the former Ann Lennon on July 21, 1973, in State College. He was a graduate of York College and attended the United Methodist Theological Seminary of Dayton, Ohio. At the time of his death he was serving as the pastor of the Catawissa Avenue United Methodist Church in Sunbury. He was approaching 25 years in the Ministry, which he began in he student parish at Arlington, Ohio. He later served in Methodist churches in Mifflinburg for three years, in Benton for five years and in McClure for nine years before coming to Sunbury three-and-a-half years ago. He was a member of the Chi Rho Singers of the United Methodist Ministers. He served on the History and Archives Committee of the Central Penn Conference of the United Methodist Church. He also served on the Equitable Salaries Committee of the conference. He was active in a mentoring program for ministerial candidates. He was a member of the Sunbury Ministerium. He collected old books and was a history buff. He was dedicated to his family and his church. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by three sons, Daniel Plank of Sunbury, Matthew Plank and wife, LaDawn, of Kings Bay, Ga. and Michael Plank and fiancee, Cristin Shawver, of Sunbury; and three sisters, Kay Peters of New Oxford, Cynthia Plank of New Oxford and Bonnie Plank of New Oxford. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Catawissa United Methodist Church, Sunbury with Rev. Dr. Samuel L. Sheffler, Rev. Paul Kauffman and Rev. Jeffrey Swanger officiating. Interment will be in the Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury. Friends will be received from 9 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army, 40 S. Fourth St., Sunbury, Pa. 17801. Funeral arrangements were handled by Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
