BELLEVILLE - Laura Besse Noffsinger Rhodes, 93, of 25 Nittany Quill Farm Lane, Belleville, formerly of Naperville, Ill., died at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at her home. Born May 13, 1907, in Johnstown, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Benjamin and Sarah Catherine "Sadie" Brallier Noffsinger. Her husband, Dale M. Rhodes, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Terry (Judy) Thiel, Belleville; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Louise, five brothers and four sisters. She was a homemaker and prior to the Depression, she worked at Quaker Oats in Chicago, Ill. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Watts Memorial United Methodist Church, Belleville, with Pastor Larry Siikanen and Darwin Breon officiating. Interment will be in Naperville Cemetery, Naperville. Friends may call 7:30-9 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044 or to the Area Agency on Aging, Buena Vista Circle, PO Box 750, Lewistown, PA 17044. The Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. LEWISTOWN - Mabel E. Rhodes, 89, of Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown, went to be with her lord at 8:55 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at the nursing home. Born April 13, 1912, in McVeytown, she was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Moist) Settle. Her husband, Clyde L. Rhodes, died July 30, 1994. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Eugene (Betty) Ripka of 604 S. Grand St., Lewistown, Mrs. Shirley Baker of 20 Catherine St., Lewistown, Mrs. William (Donna) Miller of 10 Birdhaven Place, McVeytown, and Gary L. Rhodes of 141 S. Pine Road, Lewistown; and a step-brother, Bruce Harshberger of McVeytown; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Carl L. Rhodes, on Jan. 20, 1999, a brother, and two sisters. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed sewing as a participant in Calvary Bible Church Mission Program and made hundreds of dresses for orphan girls at the Ramabai Mukti Mission in India. She was also a member of the Calvary Bible Church. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Roger R. Reece officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to: Calvary Bible Church, 301 S. LEWISTOWN - Pauline C. Rhodes, 75, of 451 S. Grand St., Lewistown, died at 10 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at her home. Born Feb. 28, 1926, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Sarah (Shawver) Arnold. Her husband, Jack Rhodes, preceded her in death on Sept. 4, 1992. Surviving are: a sister whom she raised, Linda Douty, 451 S. Grand St., Lewistown; sisters Gladys Hesketh and Mrs. Roy (Connie) Cherry, both of Lewistown; brother, Boyd Arnold Jr., Lewistown; eight nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Louise Arnold, and a brother, Orville Arnold. She was a member of the Calvary Bible Church, where she also attended Sunday School and taught the Daughters of Ruth Sunday School class. She was member of the Lewistown Moose Auxiliary. Her funeral service is at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Howard Houtz officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. MCVEYTOWN - Robert P. Rhodes, 73, of West Furnace Road, McVeytown, died at 3:42 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born July 11, 1928, in Oliver Township, he was a son of the late Roy H. and Belle (Kimberly) Rhodes. His wife, Arlene G. (Krepps) Rhodes, whom he married Aug. 14, 1948, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Harvey (Jean) Weaver, McVeytown, Darlene D. Marker and her fiancee, Andrew Lower, McVeytown, Mrs. Glenn (Debra K.) Moore Jr., Manheim, William L. Rhodes and his wife, Susan (Swan) Rhodes, Lockport, Sharon E. Richardson and her fiancee, Roy W. Bechtold, Columbia; a sister, Ethel Hennamen, Huntingdon Manor; two brothers, Marion R. Rhodes and Guy S. Rhodes, both of McVeytown; a grandson, whom he raised, Joshua R. Rhodes; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Steven R. Rhodes in 1952 and Robert P. Rhodes Jr. in 1975; two sisters, Janet Huffman and Bertha Walton; three brothers, Lewis Rhodes, Glenn Rhodes and Dale Rhodes; a grandson, Harvey C. Weaver Jr.; and a great-granddaughter, Julia Joan Wolfer Moore. He served in the United States Army. He was a truck driver for over 30 years, having driven for Glen Brower Trucking, Metal Transport, and Noerr Motor Freight-S.L. Wright, all of Lewistown. He retired from Donsco Foundry in Wrightsville in 1990, before working as gardener and groundskeeper at the residence of Donald Smith, owner of Donsco Foundry. He also raised beef cattle and farmed in Oliver Township for over 30 years. He attended Spring Run Church of the Brethren, McVeytown. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #143, Lewistown and the Wrightsville American Legion Post. He enjoyed farming, hunting and spending time with his family at his cabin. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Jerry Lee Miller officiating. Interment will be in Spring Run Cemetery. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, 26 N. ICKESBURG - Samuel L. "Pap" Rice, 79, of Ickesburg RR1, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at his home. Born June 21, 1921, in Northeast Madison Township, Perry County, he was the son of the late Scott and Nora (Hockenberry) Rice. His wife, Betty J. (Keller) Rice, preceded him in death. Surviving are: two sons, Larry L. Rice and Lester E. Rice, both of Ickesburg RR1; a daughter, Dorothy A. Berry, Ickesburg RR1; three half-sisters, Charlotte Rice, East Salem, Janet Rhoades, Tacoma, WA and Bessie "Becky" Myers, Marysville; and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in New Bloomfield and was a member of the Ickesburg Ambulance Association. Friends may call 7-9 p.m Monday and from 10 until his funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Nickel Funeral Home, with Rev. Jeffry L. Yeager officiating. Interment will be in the Buffalo Cemetery, Ickesburg RR1.
NEW HOPE - Marybelle Reiss Richard, 86, a resident of Lake Point Landing, Hendersonville, NC, formerly of Lewistown and Travelers Rest, Fla., died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Kay Reiss, in New Hope. Born in East McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late George and Alma Charlesworth. Her first husband, Edward Reiss Jr., died in 1965. Her second husband, Robert L. Richard, whom she married in 1966, died in 1998. She is survived by children, Dick Reiss and Tom Reiss, both of Asheville, NC, Mrs. Steve (Martha) Sekely, Allison Park, NC, Kay Reiss, New Hope, Mrs. Ron (Jackie) Kadane, Ballwin, Mo.; David Richard, Houston, Texas; and Bruce Richard, Mill Valley, Calif.; brothers and sisters, George Charlesworth, of N. Versailles, Ruth Komp, Gulfport, Fla., Jim Charlesworth, Lewistown, and Betty Schattschneider, Sarasota Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Charlesworth. She graduated from Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, as a registered nurse. She was very active in the Lewistown community and was one of the founders of the Mifflin County Community Chest, which became the Mifflin-Juniata County United Way. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Family, 419 Turnpike Road, Mills River, NC. LEWISTOWN - Tom G. Richard, 70, of Back Maitland Road, Lewistown, died at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at his residence. Born Dec. 7, 1930, in Derry Township, he was the son of the late Paul R. and Ruth (Hummel) Richard. His wife, Shirley (Weimer) Richard, whom he married in 1950, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Susan Artman, Halifax; a brother and sister, Mrs. Marian Brode, Mechanicsburg, and Fred Richard, Lewistown; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally Shaginaw, on Oct. 7, 1999, and three brothers, Marvin, Robert and Clair Richard. He was employed at Standard Steel for 28 years before retiring in 1992. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Maitland Church of the Brethren, secretary and treasurer of the Maitland Cemetery Company, Inc., past commander of DAV, past commander of the Mifflin County Veterans Association, a past member of the Board of Director of Standard Steel Credit Union, and an officer of Steel Union Local #1940. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Maitland Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Charles Eldredge officiating. Interment will be in Maitland Brethren Cemetery, with military graveside services by VFW Post #7011. FALLS CHURCH, VA - Edna Grace (Romig) Richards, 78, of Falls Church, Va., died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at her residence. Born Aug. 1, 1922, in McClure, she was a daughter of the late Jacob H. and Jenny (Baker) Romig. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson J. Richards. Surviving are: a son, William E. Richards, Falls Church, VA; brothers and sisters, Charles Romig, George Romig, Paul Romig, Fae McKnight, and Irene Goss; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Anne Dicker and a sister, Beatrice Romig. She was a homemaker. She was Lutheran by faith. Services were held at the Evans Funeral Chapel, Parkville, VA. Interment was in the Parkwood Cemetery.
