VENICE, FL - Dr. Carl T. Russ, 83, of Venice, FL, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Bon Secours Hospital, Venice, FL. Born April 18, 1918, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Ralph and Caroline (Basile) Russ. His wife, Mary (Pacini) Russ, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Michael Russ, Virginia Beach, VA; a brother, Roger M. Russ, Venice, FL.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gina Steele. He graduated from Lewistown High School in 1935 and then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University in 1940 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Temple University in 1943. He was appointed to the rank of Lieutenant (junior grade), U. S. Navy Dental Corps in 1943 and served honorably until his discharge from active duty and transfer to the Naval Reserve in 1946. He later served on the Military Manpower Commission in 1948. After his release from active duty, he maintained a private dentistry practice in Lewistown from 1946 through 1979. In 1972, he earned qualifications in real estate sales and appraisals. While in Lewistown, he was appointed to numerous local public service boards and commissions, as well as service on several corporate boards of directors. Upon his retirement, he relocated to Englewood, FL and, later, to Venice, FL. There, he continued his interest in real estate sales and marketing and passed the Florida state certification exam. He was Roman Catholic by faith. A memorial mass will be held Wednesday in Venice, FL. Memorial contributions may be made to: Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 106 N. MCVEYTOWN - Alma G. Rutherford, 93, of SR 103 South, McVeytown, and a guest at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown, died at 5:31 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Feb. 24, 1908, in Bratton Township, she was the daughter of the late Martha E. (Moist) Renninger and stepfather, the late Harvey Renninger. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, the late Aaron and Belle Moist. Her husband, Nelson I. Rutherford, died Sept. 4, 1973. She is survived by children, Rev. Carl N. Rutherford, Mifflinville, Phyllis R. House, Mrs. John (Shirley) McVey, and Gary N. Rutherford, all of McVeytown, and Stanley C. Rutherford, Lewistown; a sister, Hazel Eckert, McVeytown; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Renninger. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the McVeytown United Methodist Church and the former McVeytown Senior Citizens Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Marian E. Hartman officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. BEAVER SPRINGS - Catherine Mary "Kay" Ryalls, 64, of Riverwoods Nursing Center, formerly of Beaver Springs and Roslyn, died at 6:10 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Riverwoods. Born May 8, 1936, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Bernadette (Calzarette) Vizzaro. Surviving are: three daughters, Sharon R. Montgomery, Abington, Catherine M. Heintzelman, Beaver Springs and Constance L. Hughes, Lansdale; a brother, Nicholas Vizzaro, Willow Grove; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Giampietro. She was employed in the business office of Abington Memorial Hospital as an EEG technician and secretary. She also worked as an arranger for Kremp's Floral Shop, Willow Grove. She was a member of Christ Church, Beaver Springs and Faith Community Church, Roslyn. She loved sign language, reading and studying the Bible. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Community Church, Roslyn with Pastor John P. Davis and the Rev. David Meckley officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn. Family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery Foundation for Cardiomyopathy, 1419 Mt. Carmel Road, Parkton, MD 21120.
NEW CARLISLE, OH - Joseph Richard "Dick" Sanchez, 70, of New Carlisle, OH, formerly of Lewistown, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Hospice of Dayton, OH. Born April 25, 1931, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Jose Y. and Hazel (Snyder) Sanchez. His wife of 46 years, Jo Ann Sanchez, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Jose Ricardo Sanchez, Lima, OH; sister and brothers, Mrs. James (Dolores) McCrory, Lewistown, Luther Lee Sanchez, Columbus, NJ, and Albert "Boob" Sanchez, San Antonio, TX; and one grandchild. He was a 1950 graduate of Lewistown High School and served four years in the United States Navy. He retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Carlisle, OH. A memorial service was held Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, New Carlisle, OH, with Dr. James P. Parker and Dr. Kenneth Galdeen officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice of Dayton, Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, OH. The Morris Sons Funeral Home, 104 W. Main St., Fairborn, OH, was in charge of arrangements.
Maye A. Sanders, 76, of Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Beaver Springs and Baltimore, MD, passed away at 12:39 p.m. Oct. 20, 200,1 at Lewistown Hospital. She had been in ill health for the past several years. She was born, Feb. 5, 1925, in McClure, a daughter of the late Isaac and Eva (Walter) Wagner. In 1941, she married the late Clair J. Sanders, who passed away Oct. 2, 1981. She is survived by a son, David G. Sanders, Cream Ridge, NJ; six grandchildren, Denise, Daneen, Deana, Leah, John Jr. and Steven Michael; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Betty Carstetter, Gettysburg, Mary Wray, McClure, Kathy Kresen, McAlisterville and Eilene Henry, Quakertown; three brothers, Edward Wagner, Levittown, Richard Wagner and David Wagner, both of McClure. She was preceded in death by a son, John I. Sanders Jr. in 1996; a sister, Grace Hoffman, 1964; and two brothers, James Wagner, 1944 and Warren Wagner, 1987. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, painting, ceramics, baking. Her funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., with the Rev. Kevin Brophy officiating. Interment will be in the Troxelville Union Cemetery. Friends may call 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. MCALISTERVILLE - Paul M. Sankey, 67, of McAlisterville RR2, died at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born June 14, 1933, in Fayette Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Melvin W. and Ethel Mae (Benner) Sankey. His wife, Dorothy M. (Hower) Sankey, whom he married June 23, 1956, survives. Also surviving are: two daughters, Debra Jean Knepp, McClure and Brenda Mae Sankey, Harrisburg; a brother, Robert B. Sankey, McAlisterville; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth M. Sebastian. He was a 1951 graduate of Fayette High School, McAlisterville. He served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955 with the 396th Transport Company, stationed in Korea. In 1955, he was employed as a mechanic by Leister Motor Company, McAlisterville and continued to work for various owners, until presently with Hoober's Inc., McAlisterville. He was also employed by the Van Dyke Brick Works, before entering the Army. He attended Pine grove United Methodist Church, Mifflintown RR1 and was a member of the Lost Creek Hunting Camp, Seven Mountains. He was an avid reader, hunter, and Phillies and Eagles fan. He played baseball for the McAlisterville town team for many years. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Karl R. Herman officiating. Interment will be in the Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown. REEDSVILLE - Clarence L. Scheffel Sr., 79, of 122 Greenfield Drive, Reedsville, died at 3:10 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2001, at his home. Born April 3, 1922, in Pryor, Okla., he was the son of the late Lee H. and Mattie Scheffel. His wife, Viola M. Scheffel, whom he married Feb. 27, 1943, died Feb. 24, 2001. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Marvin (Elaine) Smith and Ezra Scheffel, both of Lewistown, Clara Kauffman, Mifflintown, Clarence Scheffel Jr., Milroy and William M. Scheffel, Reedsville; brothers and sisters, Vera Beitzel, Jonas Scheffel, Catherine King, David Scheffel, John Scheffel, and Paul Scheffel; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by stepmother, Annie (Miller) Scheffel; a grandson, Edward Kauffman; a brother, Alvin Eichorn; and two sisters, Sara Mast and Mary Beitzel. He retired from PennDOT and had also been employed at the Hawstone Brick Plant and Penn Furniture. He was a member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church. He served as a union steward at PennDOT. He also coached Little League baseball for many years in McVeytown. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville, with the Rev. Ivan E. Yoder and Edward Yoder officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville. REEDSVILLE - Viola M. Scheffel, 79, of 122 Greenfield Drive, Reedsville, died at 1:55 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 8, 1921, in Reedsville, she was the daughter of the late Ezra and Clara (Bender) Peachey. Her husband, Clarence Scheffel, whom she married Feb. 27, 1943, survives. She is also survived by children, Mrs. Marvin (Elaine) Smith and Ezra Scheffel, both of Lewistown, Clara Kauffman, Mifflintown, Clarence Scheffel Jr., Milroy and William M. Scheffel, Reedsville; brothers, Leonard Peachey and Ezra Peachey, both of Belleville; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Edward Kauffman; a sister, Thelma Bawel; and brothers, Norman Peachey, Raymond Peachey, and Merle Peachey. She was a graduate of Belleville High School. She was employed at Gibboney Woolen Mill, Taylor's IGA, Scheffel's Diner, and GC Murphy Company. She was a member of the Maple Grove Mennonite Church. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville, with the Rev. Ivan E. Yoder officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, 26 N.
