LONGWOOD, FL - Edward Elmer Sheerer, 76, of 103 Tindale Circle, Longwood, FL, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001 in Florida. Born July 8, 1924, in Van Dyke, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Brehman and Lizzie (Derickson) Sheerer. His wife Patricia (Cramer) Sheerer, whom he married March 25, 1948, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Ann) Filipski, Willowbrook, IL and Mrs. Daniel (Mary Pat) McKay, Troy, MI; sisters, Alma O. Becker, Mexico, Alice L. Gilson, Port Royal, Esther Dumm and Patricia A. Niemond, both of Lewistown, and Shirley A. Naylor, Shiremanstown; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister, Charles E. Sheerer, Jay E. Sheerer, Edgar E. Sheerer, Henry D. Sheerer, Ira W. "Bill" Sheerer and Mary S. Herbster. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre of Operations. He was employed by Burroughs Corporation (Unisys) from 1949 to 1984. He was a Protestant by faith. The National Cremation Society of Beacon Chapter is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Uncle Ed Sheerer to Car Account No. 0107269 of Kee (Kathleen) and Rory Daulton, missionaries in Kenya, Africa, and mailed to Campus Crusade for Christ, PO Box 628222, Orlando, FL 32862-8222.
PALMERTON - Helen I. Sheffer, a resident of the Getz Personal Care Home in Jonas and formerly a resident of Pleasant Valley Estates, Kunkletown and Morton, PA, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001 in the Palmerton Hospital. Born in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Kathryn (Long) Dreese. She was the wife of the late William H. Sheffer, who died in 1978. Surviving is a niece, Debra J. Dreese of Bloomsburg; and a nephew, Robert R. Dreese, Jr. of Lewistown. She was retired from the U.S. government. She was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ, Gilbert. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville, with the Rev. Michael Eckroth officiating. A viewing will be held from 1 p.m. Sunday until the time of service. Interment will be on Monday in the Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer.
TUCKER, GA - Frances H. Sheffield, a resident of Briarwood Nursing Center, Tucker, GA, and formerly a resident of Lewistown from 1951-1976, died Wednesday, October 17, 2001. She and her husband, Robert F. Sheffield, moved to Stone Mountain, GA, following Robert's retirement from Arrow Shirt Factory. She is survived by children, Jane Stephens, Stone Mountain, GA, Jean Russell, Napa, CA and Michael Sheffield, Tucker, GA; three sisters and two brothers; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. All three children attended Lewistown High School. Burial was in Tucker, GA.
TULLAHOMA, TN - Nadine Ruth Shehan, 81, of Tullahoma, TN, and formerly of Valley Street, Lewistown, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, TN. Born June 14, 1920, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Bruce and Effie (Walters) Partchey. Her husband, Howard R. Shehan, preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1971. Surviving are: son and daughter-in-law, Rev. David B. and Dianne G. Watts, Tullahoma, TN, daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Rick Croom, Tullahoma, TN, and step-son, Howard R. Shehan Jr., Lewistown; a sister, Violet B. Clark, Granville; grandchildren, KayLynn Poland, Rev. David B. Watts Jr., Christian H.N. Watts, Payton Searcy, Derek Croom and Whitney Croom; and great-grandchildren, Hope Watts Poland, Zachary Poland, David B. Watts III, Ashton Watts and Adam Watts. She was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Partchey and Kenneth Partchey, and sisters, Doris Miller and Rosaline Norman. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Tullahoma, TN. Her service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Tullahoma, TN, with Dr. J. Herbert Hester and Rev. Bob Perry officiating. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the Tullahoma Funeral Home, 401 Westside Dr., Tullahoma, TN, 37388-4220. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown, with the Rev. David B. Watts officiating. The Hoenstine Funeral Home, 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of local arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Alone, c/o First Baptist Church, Tullahoma, TN 37388-4220.
MCALISTERVILLE - Paul I. Shelley, 77, of McAlisterville RR2, died at 10:10 p.m. Monday, May 21, 2001, at his home. Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Fayette Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Ira J. and Mary (Stuck) Shelley. His wife, Fay I. (Lauver) Shelley, whom he married July 3, 1947, survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Paula Witmer, of McAlisterville RR2; six sisters: Mabel Strawser of Beverly Health Care-William Penn, Lewistown, Keturah Brubaker of Mifflintown, Ruth Alexander of McAlisterville, Anna Long of Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, Lulu Daughenbaugh of Zephyrhills, Fla. and Geraldine Leach of Mifflin; one granddaughter and 2 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel Spece, Sara Benner and Esther Moore. He attended Cocolamus Grammar School. He served as a United States Navy Seabee during World War II from 1943 until 1945. He was a self-employed poultry farmer until his retirement in 1980, and was also employed by Lloyd Zendt Plumbing and Heating, Richfield and the Van Dyke Brickworks. He was a member of the East Salem United Methodist Church, Mifflintown RR2. He enjoyed reading, gardening and watching football. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Dr. John C. Libert officiating. Interment will follow in the East Salem Cemetery, Thompsontown RR1. The family will be present to receive friends at a closed casket visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Friday, at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Doris Jean Sheriff, 49, of 1135 Blue Mountain Road, Lewistown, died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at her residence. Born Feb. 17, 1952, in Derry Township, she was the daughter of Clarence E. and Zelapha C. (Knepp) Sheriff of 4450 SR 103 North, Lewistown. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Dr. Dennis E. Sheriff, Long Valley, NJ; nephew, Justin E. Sheriff, Memphis, TN; niece, Jennifer B. Sheriff and grand-nephew, Nicholas Sheriff, both of Long Valley, NJ. She was a 1970 graduate of Chief Logan High School. She earned a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974 and obtained her master's degree in biostatistics from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health in 1979. From 1991-1996 she completed all doctoral course work in health services research at the University of Iowa. She was previously employed in the health care field and had worked in Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, McLean, VA and Iowa City, IA. She held professional memberships in the American Statistical Association and the American Public Health Association. She was a lifetime member of the Perry Historians, Newport and the Mifflin County Historical Society. She was a member of the Lewistown Presbyterian Church. Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Robert Zorn and Thomas Gross officiating. Interment will be in Samuel's Church Cemetery, McClure. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral hom.eFamily will provide all flowers. LEWISTOWN - Dr. Hugh I. Sherman Jr., 76, formerly of South Main Street, Lewistown, died at 12:44 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Malta Home, Granville. Born Nov. 14, 1924, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Hugh I. Sr. and Gladys (Hubbard) Sherman. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Roger (Carol) Pandel of New Tripoli, Douglas P. Sherman of West Chester and David M. Sherman of Schwensville; a sister, Helen Nein of Berwick; and six grandchildren. He was a graduate of Carnegie Tech, with an electrical engineering degree, and attended Penn State Pre Med and Pittsburgh Medical School.He was a doctor in Lewistown for 30 years, before he retiring in 1993. He served for the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown. His memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. John Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in the Methodist Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Malta Home, Granville, PA 17029.
COAL TOWNSHIP - Catherine V. Sherrick, 89, of 1453 Wabash St., Coal Township, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Shamokin Area Community Hospital. Born Oct. 31, 1911, in Shamokin, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Mary Ann (Zydel) Guzik. Her husband, Francis J. Sherrick, whom she married in 1940 in St. Stanislaus Church, died May 23, 1966. She is survived by children, Mrs. Richard (Jeannette) Miller, Mattawana and Walter Sirek, with whom she resided in Coal Township; two brothers, Ned Gusick and Walter Guzik, both of Shamokin; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Miller Jr., seven brothers, and one sister. She attended St. Stanislaus School. She was a housewife and also worked in the Shamokin Woolen Mills. She was a member of Mother Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, 214 North Shamokin St., Shamokin. She was an avid bingo player. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Mother Cabrini Roman Catholic Church, 214 North Shamokin St., Shamokin. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Coal Township. There will be no viewing or visitation. The Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, is in charge of arrangements.
