Donald I. Shetrom
PORT ROYAL - Donald Ivan Shetrom, 66, of RR2 Port Royal, died at 4:34 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Oct. 15, 1935 in Kimmel Township, Bedford County, he was the son of the late Florence Burket. Surviving are: a sister, Peggy McMullen, of Blairs Mills and two nieces, Rosemary Smith and Debra McMullen, both of Blairs Mills. He was preceded in death by a brother, Galen Burket. He attended Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, RR4 Mifflintown, where he was a member of the Sunshine Class. He worked at Skills of Central Pennsylvania, Mifflintown. Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with Pastor Craig Zendt and Pastor Belvy White officiating. Interment will be made in Fair Ridge Cemetery, Shade Gap. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 2 p.m. today.

Clara Gregory Shields
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Clara Gregory Shields, 90, of Ann Arbor, Mich., formerly of Lewistown, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Heartland Health Care Center, Ann Arbor, Mich. Born June 2, 1910, in Yeagertown, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Jeanette (Bay) Gregory. Her husband, John Shields, died Dec. 17, 1990. She is survived by children, Sister Ann Shields and Eleanor Shields, both of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Stephen Shields, Torrance, Calif.; sisters, Madeline Gregory, Lewistown, Amy Gregory, Montrose, and Mrs. James (Ann) Weir, San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Shields in 1948; brothers, Max Gregory in 1983 and James Gregory in 1998; and a sister, Emily Rhodes in 1997. She was a 1929 graduate of Lewistown High School and took numerous courses in music at Penn State University. She taught music for many years, both through private lessons and at Sacred Heart grade school. She was the Sacred Heart parish organist for 58 years and was the organist for the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Lewistown. A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, Dec. 29, in Michigan after cremation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon this Friday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Third and Dorcas streets, Lewistown. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Flowers may be delivered Friday morning at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the New Christian Montessori School of Ann Arbor or to the Servants of God's Love (a religious community which provides foster care for medically fragile babies and homes for the elderly with little or no resources). Envelopes will be provided at the church at the time of the Mass.

C. Ruth Shirk
BURNHAM - C. Ruth Shirk, 82, of Beverly Healthcare William Penn, formerly of 137 N. Walnut St., Burnham, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 5, 1918 in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Beulah A. (Searer) Snyder. Her husband Glenn Addison Shirk preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1998. Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. John (Lesley) Habbershon, 206 Fifth Ave., Burnham; brothers and sisters, Richard A. Snyder, McClure, William E. Snyder, Grantham, Donald H. Snyder, Eighth Avenue, Burnham, and Irma White, Beverly Healthcare William Penn, Lewistown; three grandchildren and seven great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by a brother. She was employed as a sales clerk for Bon-Ton in Lewistown. She was a member of Burnham Church of the Brethren. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Burnham Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Wayne W. Mast officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of the funeral service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burnham Church of the Brethren, 541 E. Freedom Ave., Burnham, PA 17009. The Heller Hoenstine Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham is in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. Shirk
MARLBORO, NJ - Helen M. Shirk, 73, of 569 County Road 520, Marlboro, NJ, formerly of Burnham, died at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, NJ. Born Nov. 23, 1927, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late John B. and Hulda (Wincer) Laird. Her husband, Clarence B. Shirk, died in 1981. Surviving are: a son, Michael L. Shirk, Marlboro, NJ; brothers and sisters, Alonzo Laird, Zelda Baker, and Esther Laird, all of Mifflintown, Betty George, Milroy and Mary Peachey, Belleville; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Early in life, she had worked at Beaver Bakery in Burnham and Letterman's Bakery in Lewistown. She was a switchboard operator at the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital for 17 years, retiring in 1992. She also worked as a volunteer at the Vanity Fair Clothing Shop of the psychiatric hospital. She was Protestant by faith. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Ruth A. Shivery
BELLEVILLE - Ruth A. Shivery, 94, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, formerly of Open Hearth Manor, Lewistown, died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Valley View Haven. Born July 14, 1906, in Yeagertown, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Leightley) Shivery. She is survived by two nieces. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother, James Shivery, and a sister, Gladys S. Weaver. She received her teaching certificate from Shippensburg State Normal School. She was an elementary school teacher for the Mifflin County School District for 44 years, retiring in 1970. She was a member of the Holy Communion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Yeagertown. She was a life member of the Mifflin County Retired School Employees Association and a life member of the Pennsylvania State Retired School Employees. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Philip C. Tundel officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family at Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. There will be no viewing; however, family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Monday until the time of the memorial service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valley View Retirement Community, 4702 E. Main St., Belleville, PA 17004.

Kenneth E. 'Shorty' Shoemaker
BELLEVILLE - Kenneth E. "Shorty" Shoemaker, 74, of 70 Wagner St., Belleville, died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at his home. Born March 27, 1927, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Humphrey and Etta Eugenia "Jean" (Lutman) Shoemaker. His wife, Gladys I. (Henry) Shoemaker, whom he married Sept. 9, 1950, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. James (Linda) Rittenhouse, McVeytown, Mrs. Robin (Bonnie) Eyer and Mrs. George (Connie) Brannon, both of Lewistown, and Debbie Shoemaker, Milroy; a sister, Nellie (Shoemaker) Jackson, Lewistown; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, having served with the Military Police. He retired from Ford New Holland after 40 years as an inspector and a manufacturing engineer. He was a long time member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Lewistown and the choir of the church. He was a life member of the Brooklyn Hose Company, Lewistown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Lewistown, with the Rev. Thomas Warne and the Rev. Dolores Calhoun officiating. Interment will be in St. Marks Cemetery. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 21 S. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044 or to St. John's Episcopal Church, 212 Penn St., Huntingdon, PA 16652 or to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044. The Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, is in charge of arrangements.

David B. Shoop
David B. Shoop, 82, of East Waterford RR1 (Waterloo), died at 8:59 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 7, 1919, in Blairs Mills, he was a son of the late James and Grace (Goshorn) Shoop. His wife, Freda (Eaton) Shoop survives. Also surviving are: children, Bud L. Shoop, Enola, William B. Shoop, Romney, WVA, Gerald D. Shoop and Linda A. Burdge, both of Waterloo; brothers and sister, Dean F. Shoop, East Waterford RR1, Dale C. Shoop, Concord and Helen E. Metz, Mongul; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a US Army veteran of WW II. He was a self-employed farmer and a member of Richvale U.M. Church and Blairs Mills Lions Club. His service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Richvale U.M. Church, with the Rev. Virginia Eminhizer officiating. Interment will be in the Upper Tusc. Presbyterian Cemetery, Waterloo, where full military honors will be conducted by the Juniata Valley Veterans Council. Friends may call today from 4-9 p.m. at the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, where the family will be present from 7-9 p.m.

Dorothy M. Shottsberger
MATTAWANA - Dorothy M. Shottsberger, 69, of Mattawana died at 3:10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Feb. 12, 1931 in Bratton Township, she was a daughter of the late James C. and Olive (Harshbarger) Shottsberger. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Franklin (Shirley) Davidheiser, Lewistown RD, and a niece and nephew. She was a member of the Pine Glen Church of the Brethren, where she helped with the children's Sunday school class department for many years and was a member of the Work and Win Sunday school class. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Donald E. Peters Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, McVeytown. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. Saturday until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pine Glen Church of the Brethren, 67 Pine Glen Road, Lewistown, PA 17044.
