CENTRE HALL - Dorothy L. Silkman, 72, of Centre Hall, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at home. Born Dec. 19, 1928, in Gregg Township, she was a daughter of the late Arthur L. and Sara Sylvia (Eungard) Auman. Her husband, William R. Silkman Sr., whom she married Sept. 21, 1947, survives. She is also survived by a son, U.S. Navy Commander William R. Silkman Jr., Newport, RI. She graduated from Gregg Townhsip Vocational School and attended Geisinger School of Nursing. She was a homemaker and from 1950-1964, she worked at the Murphy Store in Bellefonte and earlier in life, at the dress factory in Spring Mills. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Centre Hall, where she served on the building committee. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, reading, and following her son's Navy career. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Farmers Mills Union Cemetery, Farmers Mills and a memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church, 127 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall, with the Rev. Dr. John W. Betlyon officiating. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, 127 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall, PA 16828.
CENTRE HALL - William R. Silkman Sr., 74, of Centre Hall, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Centre Community Hospital. Born Feb. 2, 1927, in Yeagertown, he was the son of Bertram S. and Anna Grenoble Silkman Eungard. His wife, Dorothy I. Auman, whom he married Sept. 21, 1947, preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 2001. Surviving are: a son, U.S. Navy Commander William R. Silkman Jr. of Newport, Rhode Island. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother. He graduated from Gregg Township Vocational High School and earned a B.S. in Agricultural Education and a Master of Education degree from Penn State. He went on to complete 90 credits toward his PhD and was later certified as a Vocational Administrator. During World War II he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1945 t0 1947. He worked for six years after his retirement for Indiana University of Pennsylvania in certification of Vocational School Administrators. From 1973 until his retirement in 1983 he served as director of Erie County Vocational School. Prior to that for five years he served as Principal at Cowanesque Valley High School, Tioga County. Previously for 18 years he served as a Vocational Agricultural Teacher at Bellefonte High School. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Centre Hall, where he served on the Pastor - Parish, Finance and State Budget Committees. He also served as a delegate to the District Conference for the church. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge #477, Westfield, the Consistory in Altoona, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge #1600, State College. He was also a member of the American Vocational Association, Washington, DC; a life member of and past president of the Pennsylvania Vocational Administrators, and a past president of the Western Region Vocational Administrators. He was a life member of the PSU Alumni Association and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. He especially enjoyed hunting and golfing. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Farmers Mills Union Cemetery, Farmers Mills, with the Rev. Dr. John W. Betlyon officiating. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, 127 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall. Friends may call from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday, at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Service, 226 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Centre Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, 127 S. LEWISTOWN - John Robert Silks, 66, of 207 W. Market St., Lewistown, died at 9:35 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Oakland Veterans Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born June 9, 1935, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Charles and Blanche (Gross) Silks. Surviving are: children, John R. Hockenberry, 134 N. Main St., Reedsville, Mark A. Hockenberry, 207 W. Market St., Lewistown, and Tammy Hockenberry, Lewistown; brothers and sisters, Joseph R. Silks, 101 N. Grand St., Lewistown, Dorothy DeArment and Betty C. Swank, both of Lewistown, Alma Sheeler, Berwick, and Mrs. Glen (Phyllis) Renninger, Camp Hill; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William S. Silks and Richard C. Silks; and seven sisters, Emma P. Britcher, Esther Whitsel, Marie Ciccilione Smith, Helen Sheaffer Notestine, Charlotte Gariad, Edna R. Snyder and Delores Jane Miller. He served in the United States Army from 1961-1964, studying to be a medic. He worked for Fisher Electronics, Milroy; Capital Refrigeration, Harrisburg and Sitkins Refractory, Lewistown. He was baptized as a Methodist by faith. He was a member of the Brooklyn Hose Co., the Junction Fire Co., the Fame Fire Co. and VFW Post 7011, Lewistown. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Heart Association, 501 Howard Ave., Building D., Suite 101, Altoona, PA 16601. Hoenstine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
MCCLURE - Shirley A. Simcox, 64, of McClure passed away at home at 3:30 a.m. August 25, 2001, following a one-year illness. She was born July 25, 1937, in McClure, a daughter of the late Albert and Verdie (Weader) Haffley. She was a member of Mt. Bethel UCC, McClure. She enjoyed sewing and make crafts. She is survived by a son, Darren P. Simcox, RR2 Selinsgrove; three sisters, Marjorie Hood, Dorothy Specht and Doris Hook, all of McClure; and four brothers, Ammon Haffley and Tom Haffley, both of McClure, Bill Haffley, Zepher Hills, FL and Stanley Haffley, Carlisle. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Smith and two brothers, Robert and Donald Haffley. At the decedent's request, there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to either Hospice: The Bridge Lewistown, PA 17044 or Mt. Bethel UCC McClure, PA 17841. Arrangements are by Aurand Funeral Homes, North Brown St., McClure.
LEWISTOWN - Caterina Simonetti, 94, of C-9 Lawler Place, Lewistown, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, 163 Summit Drive, Lewistown. Born Feb. 24, 1907, in San Marco, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Archangela (Vocale) Battista. Her husband, Anthony Simonetti, preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 1974. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Leo (Ann) Smith, Lewistown RD1, Nickolas Simonetti, Old Park Road, Burnham, Mrs. Harry (Virginia) Henry, Centre Hall, Mrs. Robert (Angeline) Lindsay, Enfield, CT, Anthony Simonetti, Locke Avenue, Yeagertown, Mrs. Ronald (Catherine) Royer, Chris Avenue, Lewistown, Mrs. William (Grace) Thomas, Pleasant Gap, and Mrs. Robert (Judy) Peters, Birch Drive, Lewistown; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. She was also preceded in death by a step-son, Charles Simonetti, in 1987. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Lewistown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Marickovic officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, where a Rosary service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 106 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
KILLEEN, Texas - Wanda Singley, 71, of Killeen, Texas, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at a Texas hospital. Born Nov. 26, 1929 in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Esther (Bingam) Bannon. Her husband, Harold Eager Singley Jr., died in 1978. Surviving are: children, Harold E. Singley III and Cheryl Penebaker, both of Killeen, Texas, Jeff Singley, Coppell, Texas, and Tim K. Singley, Bulverde, Texas; brothers, William Bannon, Shamokin Dam, Lawrence Bannon, Harrisburg, and Charles Bannon, Lewistown; and eight grandchildren. Services were held at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel, 1615 S. Fort Hood, Killeen, Texas, with Dr. Joe Rich officiating. Interment was in Killeen City Cemetery.
LEWISTOWN - Herbert J. Sipe Sr., 87, of 196 S. Main St., Lewistown, died at 9:11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born March 1, 1914, in Burnham, he was the son of the late Edmund and Rebecca (Baker) Sipe. His wife, Ester Louise Sipe, died in 1969. Surviving are: children, Herbert Sipe Jr., Virginia, Richard Sipe, New Mexico, and Mrs. David (Lynda) Warner, York; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one sister. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He worked for 15 years in the FMC storehouse and later owned Sipe's TV Repair Service. He was a member of the Lake Park Methodist Church, the DAV, and was an ex-POW Fife member. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Mark S. Brower officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
THOMPSONTOWN - Loy L. 'Pete' Sipe Sr., 59, of 273 C Street, Thompsontown, formerly of Middletown and Royalton, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in Thompsontown. Born Sept. 17, 1941, in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Clarence S. and Fannie I. (Baker) Sipe. He is survived by a companion, Arlene Ferguson. Also surviving are: children, Loy I. Sipe Jr., Sugartown, Lo., Daniel P. Sipe and Penny J. Fies, both of Middletown, Amy L. Golden, Highspire, and April M. Weiss, Elizabethtown; brothers and sisters, Edward Sipe, Ickesburg, Clarence Sipe, Mt. Holly Springs, Md., Jerry Sipe and Robert Sipe, both of Royalton, Sharon Hoover, Middletown, and Joslyn Boyd, Granville; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was employed as a cabinet maker at Triangle Pacific, Thompsontown. He enjoyed hunting. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Matinchek & Daughter Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Middletown, with Mr. Samuel Fallinger officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service today the funeral home.
