MIDDLEBURG - Ralph Edwin Skipper, 60 years, of RR2, Middleburg, Centre Township, Snyder County, died at 4:50 p.m.,Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in The Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village Nursing Center, Lewisburg, where he had been admitted that morning. He had been ill for only a brief period of time. Mr. Skipper was born at Lewistown, Mifflin County, on Jan. 9, 1941, the son of the late William Harry Skipper and the late Ida E. (Gill) Skipper Woodling. He was married on July 2, 1994 to Barbara A. Miles-Bramer, who survives. He was educated at the Lewistown High School. Mr. Skipper entered the military serving with the U S Marines on Jan. 25, 1960 as a Private First Class (E-2) and was honorably discharged on Jan. 24, 1964 as a Lance Corporal. He was employed for nearly 25 years as a laborer for Thor Industries, Middleburg. Prior to his employment there, he was a self-employed carpenter. Mr. Skipper was an active member of the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Penns Creek, where he had served on the church consistory and had portrayed Jesus in an Easter cantata three years ago. He used his wood-working abilities in building many items for the church; as his faith was important to him, and also its fellowship, in that he was a sincere friend to his congregational members. He also was talented in his building doll houses and had built three puppet theaters, one given to Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, and one given to Penn State campus, State College. He was a member of veterans Social Activities Association of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post # 6631, Selinsgrove. Surviving in addition to his wife, Barbara of 7 years, are: two children, one son, Steven Skipper, Florida and one daughter, Gina Bulick and husband, Brian, of McVeytown; three grandchildren; two stepchildren, Mark A. Bramer, Silver Spring, MD and Becky L. Deitrick and husband, Lon J., of Coal Township; four step-grandchildren; one brother, Alan Skipper and wife, Helen, Lewistown; three half-brothers, Don Miller and wife, Jean, of Lewistown, Glenn "Dick" Miller, Culver City, CA, and Warren Gill, Tempe, AZ; one half-sister, Leona Griffith, Lewistown. Nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive. Mr. Skipper was preceded in death by one half-brother, Russell Skipper; three half-sisters, Mary Bumgardner, Florence Casner and Ruth Bumgardner. The funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 2 p.m. from The George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills, with The Rev. Davin Carr-Chellman, his pastor officiating and The Rev. Earl Robb, former pastor, assisting. Burial will be made in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown, with full military honors accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #7011, Lewistown. Family and friends will gather for the viewing 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. BURNHAM - Anna M. Slavish, 91, of 208 Eighth Ave., Burnham, died at 2:25 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 19, 1909, in Burnham, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Paraska (Shurbick) Slavish. Surviving are: brothers and sisters, Frank Slavish of 116 Stine Drive, Lewistown, Thomas Slavish, 524 17th Ave. North, Surf Side Beach, Myrtle Beach, SC, Helen Steele of Burnham, and Mrs. John (Betty) Brown, 12418 Tatoosh Road East, Puyallup, WA. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. She was a beautician and owner/operator of Ann's Beauty Shop, Burnham for 42 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church and a former member of Saint Mary's Guild. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Thomas Marickovic officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery, Burnham. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, where a special Rosary service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 106 N. PORT ROYAL - Anna Mary Marie Smith, 84, formerly of Port Royal RR3, died at 10:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services, Camp Hill. Born Sept. 23, 1917, in Port Royal, she was the daughter of the late Frank H. and Myrtle (Paige) Eby. Her husband, James I. "Crow" Smith, died Feb. 19, 1999. Surviving are: children, Ronald James Smith, Port Royal RR3 and Mrs. David (Nancy) Donmoyer, Enola; brothers, George Eby, Mifflintown RR2 and Robert Eby, Lewistown; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Port Royal Presbyterian Church. Her service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Pastor Kenneth R. Kitzmiller officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
LEWISTOWN - Bette M. Smith, a resident of Ohesson Manor, Lewistown, formerly of Church Street, Reedsville, died at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Ohesson Manor. Born Oct. 10, 1922, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Lydia (Grumbine) Feathers. Her husband, Ross K. Smith, died Nov. 8, 1977. Surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Dominic (Bettejane) Cesario, Mount Pleasant, Susan Robinson and Mrs. Scott (Jo Ann) Smith, both of Reedsville and Mrs. F. Kirk (Jana) Stevens, Lewistown; sister and brother, Mrs. Charles (Marie) Jones, Lewistown and Larry Feathers, Yeagertown; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Hayden (Jane) Snook. Earlier in life, she had worked at the Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Reedsville. Her funeral service will be held at noon Thursday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Kenneth Longfield officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville. Friends may call one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home. MCALISTERVILLE - Bobbie Jean Smith, 32, of McAlisterville RR1, died at 2:49 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Hershey Medical Center, as a result of a work-related accident on Monday. Born Aug. 20, 1969, in Lewisburg, she was a daughter of Dennis A. and Sharon B. (Marks) Yoder Sr. of McAlisterville RR1. Also surviving are: a son, Justin T. Smith, at home; maternal grandfather, Melvin M. Marks, White Deer; paternal grandparents, Daniel F. and M. Lois Yoder, McAlisterville RR; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Melvin R. and Trina J. Smith, McAlisterville and Dennis A. and Tracey L. Yoder Jr., Middleburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Michelle L. and Robert E. Kratzer, Richfield RR1; and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, R. Scott Smith, on Jan. 15, 2000, one nephew, Dennis A. Yoder III, and her maternal grandmother, Anna B. Marks. She was a 1987 graduate of East Juniata High School and employed by J. Fulkroad and Sons, McAlisterville for the past four years doing bridge and road construction. She attended the Church of the Open Door, Evendale. Family oriented, she organized and planned family events. She was a Jeff Gordon fan, collecting his racing memorabilia. She also collected miniature oil lamps, Ty Beanie Babies, koala bears, flamingos and Tweetie Birds. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Roupp Funeral Home, East Chestnut Street, Mifflinburg, with the Rev. Richard VonNeida officiating. Interment will be in the Montandon Cemetery. Visitors may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
CHAMBERSBURG - Catherine D. Smith, 88, a resident of the Shook Home, Chambersburg, formerly of 515 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in the Shook Home. Born Nov. 4, 1912, in York, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Alma Derr. Her husband, Grove W. Smith, died in 1993. She is survived by two sons, Clark E. Smith Sr., Shippensburg and Dwight K. Smith, Hesston; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was a 1930 graduate of Lewistown High School and she attended Bloomsburg University. She retired in 1972 from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary and the auxiliary of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., 112 W. King St., Shippensburg, with the Rev. Steven D. Dorsett officiating. Interment will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Greene Township. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home. MCVEYTOWN - Connie A. Smith, 64, of McVeytown, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at William Penn Nursing Home. Born Oct. 13, 1937, she was the daughter of Anna (Wilson) Booher of Mt. Union RD1 and the late Elmer Booher. Her husband, Gerald Smith, preceded in death in 1969. Surviving are: children, Luann Gray, Pam Wagner and Paul Smith, McVeytown RR1; two siblings, Wilbur Booher and Vonnie Orlowski, Mt. Union RR1. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Heath Funeral Home, Mt. Union. Interment will be in Bowmans Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until the funeral service Monday.
MOUNT UNION - Dale W. Smith, 72, of 184 Silverford Heights Rd., Mount Union, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born May 31, 1929 in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late Harper Leo and Cleo (Roland) Smith. His wife, Jean (Shugarts) Smith, whom he married on Aug. 25, 1956, survives. Also surviving are: two daughters, Cindy L. Valdivia, Lewistown and Jodi M. Booher, Shade Gap; a son, Gary D. "Butch" Smith, Calvin; a brother, Harper R. Smith, Carlisle; two sisters, Joanne Scott, Huntingdon and Janice Scott, Calvin; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Smith, and two sisters, Betty J. Migatulski and Jane Bowser. He was of the protestant faith. He graduated in 1948 from Mount Union High School and retired from Hemp Brothers Construction of Camp Hill in 1976 after 15 years of service. Prior to that, he was employed for several years by Owens-Corning Fiberglass of Huntingdon. He was currently serving as a Wayne Township supervisor, a position he had held for six years. He loved to hunt and spend time with his grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Rich Morris officiating. Interment will be in the Cassville Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home.
