MIFFLINTOWN - Darwin C. Smith, 78, of Mifflintown RR1 (Quigley Heights), died at 11:18 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born March 1, 1923, in Walker Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Frank G. and Theora (Hostetler) Smith. His wife, Mary Jane (Ramsey) Smith, whom he married Aug. 6, 1947, survives. Also surviving are: children, Sandra Lepley and Judy Walter, both of Beaver Springs, Larry Smith, Port Royal and Scott Smith, Middleburg; a brother, Ralph Smith, Rising Sun, MD; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Lloyd Smith and Melvin Smith. He was a 1941 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and the European Theater. He retired in 1989 as a carpenter for Manbeck Construction Company, Mifflin and prior to that, he worked for 22 years until 1972 at the American Viscose Corporation, Lewistown. He was a member of the Arch Rock United Methodist Church, Mifflintown RR1 and a member of the American Legion Post 298, Mifflintown. He enjoyed hunting and woodworking. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. David A. Cook officiating. Interment will be in the Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown RR4, where full military burial honors will be conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Council. ETTERS - Edith M. Smith, 84, of 253 White Dogwood Drive, Etters, formerly of McClure, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Woodland Nursing Center, Lewisberry. Born April 8, 1916, in Decatur Township, Mifflin County, she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Margaret (Kline) Rager. Her husband, Maxwell A. Smith, died Sept. 14, 1991. She is survived by a son, Sammy K. Smith, Etters, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. She worked in the tire fabric department of the American Viscose Corporation for 41 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of Lauver's United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Samuel's Cemetery, Decatur Township, with the Rev. James Rank officiating. Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
HARTLETON - Erma K. Smith, 94, of Rolling Hills Manor, Hartleton, formerly of McClure, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Feb. 16, 1907, in McClure, she was the daughter of the late Charles C. and Jennie Estella (Miller) Long. Her husband, Orville Smith, whom she married in 1937, preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1971. Surviving are: a daughter, B. Arlene Knepp, Middleburg; four grandchildren, Gerald Jr. and Randy A. Knepp, Lori S. Hummel, Linda K. Whitenight, seven great-grandchildren, Cathy, Kirsten, Kitzy, Adam, Brook, Danielle, Tad, and a great-great-grandson, Keegan Knepp. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Miriam Long and Mary Snook, and two brothers, Miller C. and James W. Long. She was a member of the McClure United Methodist Church. In 1972, she retired from the former American Viscose. She enjoyed helping with the Fire Co. Carnivals, making potpie and at the Five Barley Loaves, Beaver Springs. She was a member of the McClure Women's Club. She also enjoyed sewing with her church group at Riverwoods, Lewisburg. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Kevin Brophy officiating. Interment will be in Black Oak Ridge Cemetery. KENILWORTH, NJ - Esther R. Shaffer Smith, 89, of Kenilworth, NJ, formally of North Main Street, Yeagertown, died at 3:50 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Cranford Health and Extended Care, Cranford, NJ. Born Jan. 2, 1912, in Mifflin County, she was the daughter of the late William and Ida (Moore) Shaffer. Her husband, James O. "Joe Buck" Smith, preceded her in death. Surviving are: a daughter, Beverly J. Smith, Kenilworth, NJ, with whom she resided; a brother, Eugene H. Shaffer, Belleville; two nieces and a nephew. Earlier in life, she had been employed at he American Viscose Corporation, Lewistown, Empire Kosher, Mifflintown, and the Hershey and Miller's Cafe, Yeagertown. She was a life long member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, North Main Street, Yeagertown. The Evergreen Crematory, Hillside NJ and the Opacity Funeral Home, 511 Washington Ave., Kenilworth, NJ, were in charge of arrangements.
MT. UNION - Eugene M. "Smitty" Smith, 77, of the Mt. Union area, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at the VA Hospital in Lebanon. Surviving are: two children, Ricky E. Smith of McVeytown and Cathy Smith of Shippensburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mt. Union. Interment will be in the Indiantown Gap Military Cemetery, Annville. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Thursday. MIFFLINTOWN - Ivan M. "Ding" Smith, 77, of Mifflintown, died at 8:40 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 14, 1923, in East Waterford, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Emory C. and Helen M. (Miller) Smith. He is survived by a sister, Marion S. Sieber, Mifflintown RR3; four nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine Smith on July 20, 1969. He retired as a custodian at the Selinsgrove State Hospital. He was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown and the Mifflintown Hose Company No. 1. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas Compton officiating. Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the service Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Juniata County Food Pantry, PO Box 44, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
BELLEVILLE - Joanne M. Smith, 49, of 4501 East Main St., Lot 7B, Belleville, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Geisinger Medical Center. Born April 13, 1952, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of Sarah C. (Traxler) Smith of 210 Second St., Belleville and the late George Smith. Also surviving are: sister and brothers, Jeanne M. Seidel, Thomasville, Ray M. Smith, Mill Creek, Glenn M. Smith, Belleville and Dale T. Smith, Hesston; four nieces, two nephews, one great-niece and four great-nephews. She was a 1970 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School and also graduated from Juniata-Mifflin Counties Area Vocational-Technical School, Lewistown. She was employed as a LPN at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. She was a member of Allensville Presbyterian Church. She had been active in the 4-H during her teen years. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, with the Rev. Geoffrey A. Huish and the Rev. Paul Bender officiating. Interment will be in Allensville Presbyterian Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home. MIFFLINTOWN - John A. Smith, 78, of HC-63, Mifflintown, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001 in the Harrisburg Hospital. Born Nov. 21, 1923, in Juniata Township, Perry County, he was the son of the late Morris C. and Sarah E. (Reeder) Smith. His wife Marie H. (Hart) Smith, whom he married July 18, 1945, survives. Surviving in addition to his wife are three brothers, James R. Smith of New Bloomfield, Martin W. Smith of Newport and Homer E. Smith of New Carrollton, MD; four nieces and six nephews. He was a 1942 graduate of Newport High School, Newport. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart while serving with the 95th Infantry in the European Theater. He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, where he served on the church council. He also served on the First National Bank of Mifflintown advisory board and was a member of the Director Emeritus Board. In his early life he opened the first Farm Bureau Feed Store, Mifflin, and later was an Agway petroleum dealer for Juniata County. He was also self-employed as a Nationwide Insurance Agent, operating the John A. Smith Insurance Agency, Mifflintown, until his retirement in 1987. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Mifflintown Chapel of the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Terry Smith officiating. Interment will be in East Salem Cemetery, RR 1, Thompsontown, where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from noon until the time of service, in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, HC-63, Box 30, Mifflintown, PA 17059 or to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
