FELTON - Kenneth G. Smith, 78, of Felton, died at 2:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at his residence. Born May 23, 1922, in Chanceford, York County, he was the son of the late George A. and Carrie (Goheen) Smith. He is survived by a companion, N. Mae Varner. Also surviving are: children, Kenneth L. Smith, Rick L. Smith, and Sonja G. Shaull, all of Red Lion, Dennis L. Smith and Sandra E. Runkle, both of Felton; brother and sister, Donald E. Smith, Red Lion and Thelma Dettinger, Brogue; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. He owned and operated his own farm his whole life and also worked as a truck driver for Glen Gery Brick Yard, as a school bus driver for Red Lion Bus Company and for Caterpillar for 14 years, before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Red Lion Bible Church. He was also a member of the United Auto Workers, the Juniata Saddle Club, and the Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Home Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, with the Rev. Ronald B. Schmuck officiating. Interment will be in Bethlehem United Methodist Stonepile. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today and 10 a.m until the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Lallah E. E. Smith, 86, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown, formerly of 113 Seventh Street, Highland Park, Lewistown, died at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Sept. 24, 1914, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Calvin and Mary Jane (Eby) Pearson. Her first husband, Harry Benner, died in 1961; her second husband, Albert W. Naugle, died in 1982; and her third husband, Charles J. Smith, died in 1990. She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Charles (Delores L.) McMinn, Dry Valley Road, Burnham and Nancy J. Coffman, Cedar Lane, Burnham; a sister, Violet Pearson Klinger, McClure; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Harry R. Benner in 1980; a brother, Albert B. Pearson Sr.; and a half brother, Harry R. Kitting. She was employed by the Mifflin County School District as a cafeteria worker at the Chief Logan High School for 16 1/2 years. She was a member of Calvary Bible Church. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Roger R. Reece officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: Calvary Bible Church, 301 S. Pine Road, Lewistown, PA 17044.
HARRISBURG - Mrs. Maude C. Smith, 95, formerly of Mexico, Pa, and Mifflintown, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Blue Ridge Mountain Convalescent Home, Harrisburg. Born June 8, 1906, in Burnham, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Laura (Etka) Carvell. Her husband, Kelly S. Smith, preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1986. Surviving are: a son and daughter, L. Kim Smith, Harrisburg, and Mrs. David (Linda) Rodimel, McMinnville, Oregon; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was the last of her family having been preceded in death by a brother and sister. She was a graduate of Mifflintown High School and Shippensburg College. She was a retired elementary school teacher having worked for the Juniata County School District. She was a member of the Port Royal Presbyterian Church but attended the Mexico United Methodist Church where she was a youth worker and Sunday School Teacher. She was also a member of the Juniata County Retired School Teachers Association. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rex Funeral Home, 308 Market St., Port Royal, with the Rev. Ross Reider officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
BURNHAM - Melvin E. Smith, 90, of 201 Fifth Ave., Burnham, died at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at his home. Born July 31, 1910, in Sunbury, he was the son of the late Oscar Emanuel and Lettie (Chamberlain) Smith. His wife, Marian (Page) Smith, whom he married Aug. 7, 1940, survives. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother, Marlin Smith. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Railway Battalion. He was Mill Wright at Standard Steel, Burnham, retiring in 1975 with 34 years of service. He was a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church, Burnham and was a charter member of the Grove Memorial United Methodist Church, Lewistown. He was Past Master and member of the Lewistown Lodge 203 F&AM, Lewistown, having just received his 50 year membership pin. He was also a member of the Harrisburg Consistory and Jaffa Shrine, Altoona. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Larry K. Lutz officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery, Burnham. There will be no viewing, but family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Private Masonic services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Walnut Street United Methodist Church, 203 N. Walnut St., Burnham, PA 17009.
MIFFLINTOWN - N. Leone Smith, 86, of Berry's Personal Care Center, R.R. 1, Mifflintown, died at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Brookline Manor & Retirement Village, R.R. 1, Mifflintown. Born March 12, 1915, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late R. Howard and Margaret (Horning) Singley. Her husband, J. Loyd Smith, preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 1984. She is survived by: a son, Frank L. Smith of McAlisterville; three grandchildren, Zachary L. Smith, Alyson L. Smith, both of Shippensburg and Nicole S. Smith of Lewistown; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary L. Smith, on Sept. 15, 1993, and she was the last of her immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph S. Singley and Glenn H. Singley. She was a 1932 graduate of Mifflintown High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Arch Rock United Methodist Church, R.R 1, Mifflintown. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mifflintown Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes, inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas Compton officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. A viewing will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
WELLSVILLE - Norman Smith, 88, of Hawley, PA, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, in Wellsville, NY. Born in Brodsbeck, PA, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary, in 1987. His wife of thirteen years, Jean Hamm Lewis survives. Also surviving are: a son, Adrian Smith, Lords Valley, and a step-son, Jeff Lewis, Branchville; a sister, Marion Auckey, Hanover; two grandsons, Steven Smith, Newton, David Smith, Conashaugh Lakes, and three great-grandchildren, Holly Smith, Amanda Smith and Olivia Smith. He lived in Culver's Lake, NJ, from 1948 until 1965 when he moved to Mifflintown, and then moved to McAlisterville in 1984, and then moved to Dingmans Ferry in 1989. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was self-employed at Hillside Orchards, Mifflintown. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. His graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville. Friends may call from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Monday, at the Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St., Branchville, NJ.
LEWISTOWN - Oliver P. Smith Jr., 84, of 28 Spangle Ave., Lewistown, died at 9:40 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2001, at his home. Born on June 27, 1917, in Youngwood, Westmoreland County, he was the son of the late Oliver P. Smith Sr. and Rebecca (Fink) Smith. He is survived by his wife, Laura E. (Fisher) Smith, whom he married on July 10, 1941. Also surviving are: three sons, Oliver P. Smith III, of Hollidaysburg, Daniel J. Smith, of Hermanie, and William R. Smith, of Montpelier, Indiana; two sisters, Dorothy Culp, of Blairsville, and Nancy J. Harbaugh, of Youngwood; and a brother, Richard Smith, of Greensburg; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Woodrow Smith; two sisters, Roberta Smith and Margaret Reid; and two grandchildren. He was a track foreman for Penn Central Railroad from 1942-1973. He was a member of Pleasant Acres Assembly of God Church, Lewistown.. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2001, at Pleasant Acres Assembly of God Church, 160 Summit Dr., Lewistown with the Rev. Evan Iacoboni and the Rev. Harold Imes officiating. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment will be at Restland Cemetery in Monroeville. Another funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at Joseph W. Nickels Funeral Home, 404 Sewickley Ave., Hermanie, with the Rev. Clarence Reed officiating. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2001 at Nickels Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to Pleasant Acres Assembly of God Church, 160 Summit Dr., Lewistown, PA, 17044. LEWISTOWN - Pauline E. Smith, 96, a resident of Ohesson Manor, Lewistown, formerly of Open Hearth Manor, died at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Nov. 13, 1904, in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Blanche Hoffman. Her husband, Robert L. Smith, died in 1966. She is survived by a son, Robert C. Smith, 53 Woodbine Road, Lewistown, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters. She was a graduate of the Shippensburg State Normal School. She was an elementary school teacher in Mount Union and for the Mifflin County School District for 40 years. She was a member of the Burnham Methodist Church. Private graveside services will be held at Juniata Memorial Park, with the Rev. Clifford Miller Jr. officiating. There will be no viewing and family will provide all flowers. Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
