LEWISTOWN - William S. Smith, 63, of Lewistown, died at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at his home. Born March 2, 1937, in Mifflin County, he was the son of the late Robert C. and Blanche (Arnold) Smith. He is survived by a companion, Ruth Ann Reed. Also surviving are: children, Mayshell D. Hogle, Rock Point, Julia L. Casner, Etters, Penny Lynn Spigelmyer, Spring Street, Lewistown, and Harry G. "Jerry" Reed, at home; brothers and sisters, Robert D. Smith, Ferguson Valley, McVeytown, Emma B. King, Yeagertown, Margaret L. Kohler, Lockport, Myrtle B. Laub, McClure RR, and Betty Jane Hile, Strodes Mills; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Harold J. Smith, Charles C. Smith, and JoAnn Forgy. He was a 1956 graduate of McVeytown High School. He was employed in the spinning department of the American Viscose for 14 years, for Mifflin Glass for 10 years and then for Philip Wolf & Sons, retiring in 1993. He was Baptist by faith. He enjoyed camping and fishing at Locust Campground and was the campground bingo caller. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Karen McCachren officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HOSPICE: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
REEDSVILLE - Helen S. Smoker, 70, a resident of Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville, formerly of Reedsville, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Valley View. Born Sept. 10, 1930, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Cloyd C. and Ada Minnie (Reed) Bowersox. Her husband, Ralph F. Smoker, died July 29, 1993. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a twin sister, Hazel Bowersox and sisters, Beulah McClellan and Claire McClellan. She attended Reedsville Christian Missionary and Alliance Church. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Raymond B. Reeves officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville. Memorial contributions may be made to: Valley View Retirement Community, 4702 E. Main St., Belleville, PA 17004.
BELLEVILLE - Mark J. Smoker, 79, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, died at 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 7, 1921, in Belleville, he was the son of the late Christ A. and Frona R. (Yoder) Smoker. His wife, Dorothy E. (Wilson) Smoker, died Feb. 15, 1997. Surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Robert (Susan) Keller and Mrs. Kenneth (Nancy) Wyland, both of Belleville; a sister, Leah R. Russler, Franklin, NC; four grandchildren and four great-granddaughters; and one step-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul D. Smoker. He was United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army Infantry, Co. D, 317 Infantry, 80th Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was the owner of Mark Trucking of Belleville, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Belleville. He was also a charter member of the Stroup-Alexander VFW Post 5935, Belleville; the McVeytown Lodge F&AM 376; the Lewistown Chapter 186; the Lewistown Council 64; the Lewistown Commandery 26; the Harrisburg Consistory; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon 88, Mifflintown; the Jaffa Shrine; the Royal Order of Jesters, Altoona; the Mifflin County Shrine Club; the Lewistown BPO Elks 663; the Burnham YMCA; and a honorary life member of the Belleville Fire Company. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, Belleville, with the Rev. Lois Martin officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by Stroup-Alexander VFW Post 5935. Friends may call 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday at the Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, Belleville, where a masonic service will be held at 8:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: Valley View Haven, 4702 E. BURNHAM - Dorothy G. Snook, 91, of 417 S. Walnut St., Burnham, died at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 1, 1909, in New Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Professor Herbert W. and Mary Myrtle (James) Firth. Her husband, Walter O. Snook, died April 28, 1984. She is survived by: brothers and sisters, Herbert Firth, Yeagertown, George Firth, Williamsport, William Firth, Montoursville, Katherine Neel, California, and Laura Zong, Lewistown; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet F. Fultz on March 23, 2001, two brothers and six sisters. She was employed over the years by C. C. Arnold, Danks & Co. and Deihl's Flowers. She was a member of the Burnham Presbyterian Church, where she was a former elder. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Burnham Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Zorn officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family at Little Valley Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be no viewing. Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, is in charge of arrangements.
LEWISTOWN - Gary K. Snook Jr., 42, of 3 S. Walnut St., Lewistown, died at 6:40 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at the Hershey Medical Center. Born Dec. 22, 1958, he was the son of Marjorie A. (Walker) Snook of 49 Jewel St., Lewistown, and the late Gary K. Snook Sr. His fiancee, Diane V. Grindstaff of 3 S. Walnut St., Lewistown, survives. Also surviving are: two sons, Gary K. Snook III and James R. Snook, both of Lewistown; a daughter, Shandi L. Snook of Lewistown; a step-son, Jerry J. Fulton of Lewistown; a step-daughter, Christie A. Fisher of Lewistown; two brothers, Scott A. Snook of Alfarata and Michael W. Snook of Lewistown; and one granddaughter. He served in the United States Navy for five years. He was an electrician for Marlette Homes Inc. He was a member of the Pine Glen Church of the Brethren. He was an avid fisherman and citizen-band radio user. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Donald Peters officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. MCVEYTOWN - James P. Snook, 82, formerly of Meadowview Manor Retirement Home, McVeytown, died at 8:50 a.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born Sept. 24, 1918, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Edward C. and Mabel O. (Black) Snook. His wife, Marguerite Snook, preceded him in death on Dec. 11, 1983. Surviving are: brothers and sisters, Jean Krepps and Robert Snook, both of Kish Apartments, Lewistown, Doris Dillree, Memphis, TN and William Snook, McClure. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He was employed by Standard Steel, Burnham until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Fame Fire Company, the American Legion Post No. 90, the United Steel Workers No. 1940 and a member of the National Guardsmen No. 166. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown with the Reverend Father Derald Stump officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Monday until the time of the funeral at the funeral home.
BEAVER SPRINGS - Mary "Angeline" Snook, 96, of Beaver Springs RR1, died at 4:25 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Zendt Nursing Home, Richfield, where she had been a resident since October of 1994. Born July 7, 1904, in Decatur Township, Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late Banks and Sarah (Lash) Knepp. Her husband, John C. Snook, whom she married Nov. 8, 1934, died Jan. 27, 1995. She is survived by a daughter, Sara A. Wilt, Beaver Springs RR1; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, David C. Snook, at birth; a sister, Cora Mae Knepp Wagner; and three brothers, Palmer, Cloyd and Lester Knepp. She was a homemaker and had farmed with her husband all her life in Spring Township. She was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Troxelville. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking and gardening. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, in the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with Pastor Nancy Moyer officiating. Interment will be in the Samuels Church Cemetery, McClure. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. today and the family will receive friends from noon until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. MCCLURE - Mildred L. Snook, 87, of McClure RR2, died at 10:10 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital, where she had been a patient for two weeks. Born July 19, 1913, in Decatur Township, Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late Lester J. and Jennie E. (Heeter) Krick. Her husband, Russell D. Snook, whom she married in 1929, preceded her in death in 1969. Surviving are: children, Helen G. Walter, Beavertown, Edna S. Laub, McClure, Mae E. Renninger, Pearl I. Phillips, Robert E. Snook, Alton D. "Smoke" Snook and Donald R. "Bud" Snook, all of McClure RR2; brothers and sisters, Robert Krick and Paul Krick, both of Limestoneville, Hulda Ditzler, Milton, Margaret Heims, Glen Iron and Pauline Schuler, Jersey Shore; 24 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of Samuels Church, McClure, where she participated in Sunday school and the church women's group. Early in her life, she worked at the former Kirby Manufacturing. She enjoyed reading her Bible, making crafts and spending time with her family. Her funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Samuels Church, McClure, with the Rev. Clark Kelsey and the Rev. William H. Hunsicker officiating. Interment will be in Black Oak Ridge Cemetery, McClure RR2. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Monday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W.
