MCCLURE - Ruth G. Spigelmyer, 83, of McClure, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001. Born Sept. 23, 1917, in West Beaver Township, Snyder County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Elsie (Goss) Hassinger. Her first husband, John Burger, whom she married Aug. 10, 1946, died Sept. 11, 1957. Her second husband, Marvin J. Spigelmyer, whom she married Nov. 14, 1958, died March 31, 2001. Surviving are two brothers, H. Mahlon Hassinger, Chambersburg and John Hassinger, McClure RR2; stepdaughter, Mrs. Jack (Constance "Connie") Timblin, McClure RR2; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. She was preceded its death by a sister, Lois E. Hassinger. She worked with her husband for the Winebarger Church Furniture, Lynchburg, Va. and served as secretary at the former Standard Shirt Factory for many years. Earlier in life, she had worked in the Governor's office, Harrisburg and as a nanny for the Bubb family. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure, where she played the piano and organ for many years. She enjoyed golfing, crocheting, sewing, music and playing the organ and piano. A services of Christian Burial will he held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Charles Brophy and the Rev. Donald Wise officiating. Interment will be in the McClure Union Cemetery. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Friday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, where the family will be present 7-9 p.m. Friends may also call 12:30 p.m. until the time of the services Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: Trinity Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund, McClure, PA 17841.
BELLEVILLE - Lougretta A. "Garb" Stallman, 93, of Second Street, Belleville, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2001, at Valley View Retirement Community, Belleville. Born Aug. 31, 1907, in Robertsdale, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Betsy (Dempsie) Williams. Her husband Edward C. Stallman preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1966. Surviving are: a brother, Marvin Williams, Huntingdon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and braiding rugs. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Salem Cemetery, Shade Gap, with the Rev. Jeanette Rapp officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Valley View Retirement Community, 4702 E. Main St., Belleville, PA 17004. Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown is in charge of arrangements.
MILLMONT - Roger Lee Starks, 49, of Millmont RR2, died at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2001, at his home. He had been in ill health for the past four months. Born March 15, 1952, in Lewisburg, he was a son of the late Warren "Pete" and Gladys (Bell) Starks. He is survived by a companion, Tammie Young. He is also survived by three daughters, Stacey J. Zechman and Trina R. Starks, both of Beaver Springs and Whitney C. Starks, Millmont; five brothers, Parker Boop, Barrett "Jade" Boop, Gerald "Bup" Starks, and Dale "Buford" Starks, all of Millmont, and James Starks, Mifflinburg; and three grandchildren. He owned and operated Do-All Contracting, Millmont until he became ill. He was a member of Midd-West Bass Masters, the Susquehanna Motorcycle club and a life member of the West End Fire Company. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, motorcycling and the outdoors. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with the Rev. Richard VonNeida officiating. Interment will be held in the Lincoln Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, 1948 E. MILLERSTOWN - Vera M. Stauffer of Millerstown, died at 7 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at her home. Born in Ickesburg, she was a daughter of the late Roy M. and Vivian M. (Shull) Kline. Her husband, Dennis R. Stauffer, whom she married May 2, 1964, survives. Also surviving are: two brothers and two sisters, Paul L. Kline, Liverpool, James Lee Kline, Dillsburg, D. Jeanne Shields, Dauphin and Freda A. Dalious, Catawissa. She graduated from Ickesburg High School in 1939. She was employed as a clerk for the Department of the Treasury, Harrisburg, for 32 years until her retirement on July 4, 1986. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ickesburg and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and sewing. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Diabetes Association, 2040 Linglestown Road, Suite 106, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to the Millerstown Ambulance League, c/o Amber Fegley, PO Box 204, Millerstown, PA 17062. CAMP HILL - Charles W. Steele, 90, of Highland Park, Camp Hill, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at The Woods of Cedar Run. Born Jan. 23, 1911, in Reedsville, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Jane W. Sherman. His wife of 69 years, Lucy B. Steele, survives. Also surviving are: children, Charles S. Steele of East Lansing, MI and Jane W. Morgan of Camp Hill; a sister, Jane S. Houser of Lewistown; four grandchildren and three great-grandsons. He was a graduate of Lewistown High School and attended the former Carnegie Institute of Technology. He taught in the western part of Pennsylvania in Mount Oliver, Neville Island and South Fayette Township. He became a professional Boy Scout in 1938. His first assignment was in Pittsburgh where he became the Field Executive for Cub Scouting. He next served at BSA National Headquarters in Washington DC and was the Deputy Executive at Region III headquarters in Philadelphia. In 1957, he served as the scoutmaster for Troop 33, representing central Pennsylvania first at the 4th National Jamboree in Valley Forge and then at the International Jamboree Jubilee in Sutton Coldfield England, celebrating Boy Scouting's 50th year. He retired from the Boy Scouts of America in 1973, having served as the scout executive for the Keystone Area Council since 1952. After retirement, he also worked with the Tri-County United Way Fund Drive Campaigns and the York-Adams Council, BSA, as a member of the Camp Tuckahoe Redevelopment Committee. He was a member of the Cape Coral United Methodist Church; the Rotary Club of Harrisburg; and was a member or the Order of the Arrow and received the Silver Beaver Award for providing noteworthy service to the Nation's youth and the St. George emblem for service to Catholic youth. Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. CHAMBERSBURG - Paul Steinbach, 97, of 55 Fifth Ave., Chambersburg, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born June 23, 1903, in Budapest, Hungary, he was the son of the late Adolph and Pearl (Schwartz) Steinbach. He was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister. He was owner/operator of The Bon-Ton Women's Clothing Store, Chambersburg. He was a member of the Sons of Israel Synagogue, Chambersburg and the B'nai B'rith. Services will be held today at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown. Interment will be in Ohev Sholom Cemetery, Lewistown RR. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Sons of Israel Synagogue, 209 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
EAST WATERFORD - James E. Steinberger, 77, of RR1 East Waterford, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at his residence. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with Rev. Harold N. Imes officiating. Interment will be in the Concord Cemetery. There will be no public viewing.
LEWISTOWN - Eleanor M. Stephens, 78, of 114 Old Stage Coach Road, Lewistown, died at 2:25 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born May 7, 1923, in Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Lecada (Duffey) Shields. Her husband, James P. Stephens, died Oct. 8, 1978. Surviving are: children, James P. Stephens Jr., Dillsburg, Edward H. Stephens, Rockville, MD, Mrs. Dale (Bonnie) Mackneer and Virginia M. Stephens, both of Lewistown; brothers and sisters, Kenneth Shields, Sonny Shields and Richard Shields, all of Shirleysburg, Mrs. William (Helen) Piper, Landisville, and Mrs. William (Marie) Lauer, Dover; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Belle Ritchey. Earlier in life, she had been employed by the American Viscose Corporation and then as an Avon representative. She last worked at the Arrow Shirt Factory, retiring in 1985, with over 20 years of service. She was a member of the Parkview Church of the Brethren, Lewistown. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Parkview Church of the Brethren, Lewistown, with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. There will be no viewing. Family will receive friends 1 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the church.
