Emmet S. Swartz, 92, formerly of McAlisterville, died at 10:05 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village. Born Nov. 14, 1908, in East Salem, he was a son of the late John L. and Mary (Mitchell) Swartz. His wife, Catherine (Benner) Swartz, whom he married May 10, 1927, died April 7, 1974. Surviving are: a daughter Shirley E. Winters of McAlisterville; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters, a grandson and a great-granddaughter. He attended Red Bank School. He was employed as a road worker by the WPA, Harrisburg; as a mechanic for Harry Keller, New Bloomfield; and as an oiler for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Enola. His service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Graham C. Fowler officiating. Friends may call 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Geisinger Foundation - Children's Hospital, 100 N. Academy Drive, Danville, PA 17922.
MIFFLINTOWN - Oscar H. "Bo" Swartz, 74, of Mifflintown RR4, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin HC 67. Born Aug. 21, 1926, in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Oscar H. and Mary (Flood) Swartz. His wife, Jean (Harris) Swartz, whom he married Oct. 15, 1948, survives. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, Nelson Swartz and Lane Swartz. He graduated from Port Royal High School. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre. He worked in maintenance at the American Viscose Corporation and at Standard Steel and then as a bus driver for Fullington Bus, until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown, Union lodge 324 F&AM, and the Juniata Valley Forest 88 Tall Cedars of Lebanon He enjoyed snowmobiling. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third Street, Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas Compton officiating. Interment will be in Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Cemetery, Academia, where full military honors will be provided by the Juniata County Veteran's council. Friends may call 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. RICHFIELD - Raymond O. Swartz, 64, of Richfield RR1, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at his residence. Born May 29, 1937, in Monroe Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Ernest and Beulah (Troup) Swartz. His wife, Gloria J. (Chambers) Swartz, survives. Also surviving are: two sons, two daughters, two brothers, four sisters, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. (Raymond E., Rodney E., Tonya S. Swartz and Gloria D. Benner. His service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills, with the Rev. Marlin Spickler officiating. Burial will be private. Friends may call 7 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
MIFFLINTOWN - Robert C. Switzer, 74, of the Brookline Manor, RR1 Mifflintown and formerly of RR4 Mifflintown, died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at the nursing home. Born Aug. 13, 1927, in Fermanagh Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late William E. and Mabel (Wright) Switzer. His wife Joanne B. (Beers) Switzer, whom he married on Aug. 13, 1951, survives. Also surviving are: two sons, Robert C. Switzer Jr., Harrisburg and Michael B. Switzer, Hermosa Beach, CA; six sisters, Ardith L. Yeisley, RR5 Mifflintown, Leone C. Potter, RR4 Mifflintown, B. Jane Street, Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, Lois H. Harris, RR2 Port Royal, Betty J. Carter, RR1 Mifflintown and Shirley L. Houtz, Carlisle; two brothers, Frank W. Switzer, Port Alleghany and Joseph W. Switzer, Corisco. He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post 298 and the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post 5083, Mifflintown. He retired from Switzer Chevrolet and Oldsmobile, Mifflintown, as the shop foreman and had worked as a mechanic and in the auto body shop. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge Str., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Juniata County Meals on Wheels, 9 Cross St., Mifflintown, PA 17059.
MIFFLINTOWN - Charles E. "Eddie" Tabb Jr., 52, of Mifflintown RR5, died at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at his home. Born July 4, 1948, in Derry Township, Mifflin County, he was the son of Erma Tabb Weimer of Port Royal and the late Charles E. Tabb Sr. His wife, Sharon E. (Watts) Tabb, whom he married June 1, 1968, survives. Also surviving are: three children, Earl D. Tabb, Granville, Mrs. Richard (Shirley) Rothrock, Mifflintown, and Charles E. "Turk" Tabb III, at home; sister and brother, Mrs. Martin (Linda) Ehrenzeller and Ricky Tabb, both of Port Royal; and four grandchildren. He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War, retiring on Feb. 17, 1970 on permanent disability due to combat wounds. He was a member of the Mifflin County Coin Club. He enjoyed dirt track racing at Path Valley Speedway Park, having raced his final lap in #4 with his oldest son on April 27, 2001. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, collecting coins and spending time with family. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. William V. Fetrow officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana, where graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, Mifflin-Juniata Unit, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
QUINCY - Henry J. Taylor, 82, of the Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, formerly of 127 Cameo Drive, Fayetteville, died at 10:54 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the home. Born April 16, 1919, in Reedsville, he was the son of the late Robert James Earl and Mary Catherine (Marks) Taylor. His wife, Mildred Kay (Treaster) Taylor of the Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, whom he married Dec. 24, 1944, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Ralph M. (Connie K.) Smith of Scotland, PA; sisters, Mary Ellen Goss of Leola, Evelyn LeMay of Yeagertown, and Patsy L. Miller of Reedsville; a step-granddaughter and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. He was a 1937 graduate of the former Reedsville High School. He was a United States Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the 22nd Bomb Group, Second Squadron. He was an office manager at Suburban Propane, Chambersburg, retiring after 35 years. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Chambersburg. He was also a member of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg; the National AARP; and the Chambersburg Mall Walkers. He enjoyed playing baseball earlier in life. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with the Rev. A. Robert Cook officiating. Interment will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg, where military graveside services will be provided by member of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard. Friends may call 7-8 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Quincy United Methodist Benevolent Care Fund, 6596 Orphanage Road, Quincy, PA 17247 or to St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund, 750 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
RAVENNA, OH - James Harry Taylor, 71, of Ravenna, OH, formerly of Steubenville, OH and Lewistown, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at the Ravenna Hospital, Ravenna, OH, due to complications from lung cancer. Born Feb. 5, 1930, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Jeannette (Grebe) Taylor. Surviving are: children, Bruce Taylor of Ravenna, OH, Scott Taylor of Solon, OH, Jeff Taylor of Denver, CO and Kim Taylor of Reedsville; and four grandchildren. He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He retired as an apartment manager. His remains were donated to NEOUCOM (Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine) in Rootstown, OH, for future research. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
MIFFLINTOWN - Nellie Landis Taylor, 92, of Brookline Manor Retirement Village, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of 428 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died at 8:55 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Brookline Manor. Born June 16, 1908, in Port Royal, she was the daughter of the late George G. and Minnie (Souders) Landis. Her husband, J. Wilbur Taylor, died Dec. 20, 1991. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family and was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Page and a brother, C. Ralph Landis. She was a 1926 graduate of the Port Royal High School and a graduate of Juniata College, Huntingdon. She was a retired elementary school teacher, having worked for the Mifflin County School District and earlier in life, taught in Juniata County. She was a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church. She was also a life member of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired Teachers and a member of the Mifflin County Association of Retired School Teachers. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Marton J. Roberson officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
