MIFFLINTOWN - Sarah Rebecca Varnes, 96, of Mifflintown RR5, died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at his residence. Born April 13, 1905, in Walker Township, she was the daughter of the late Irwin C. and Anna May (Puffenberger) Weaver. Her husband, J. Glenn Varnes, died Nov. 28, 1980. Surviving are: children, Donald Varnes, Newark, DE, Mrs. Raymond (Anna Jane) White, East Waterford, Dorothy Leister, Broken Arrow, OK, and Mrs. John (Shirley) Kerr, Fort Pierce, FL; 25 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: two sons, Kenneth "Ted" Varnes and Rowlan Varnes; three grandchildren, David Alexander Varnes, Arnold Brian Varnes, and Mary Jane Varnes; and one great-granddaughter, Leslie White. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, with the Rev. William Esborn officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 West Fourth St., Lewistown, PA, 17044. Guss Funeral Home, 20 South Third Street, Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.
CAMP HILL - Marian M. (Lauver) Vaughn, 85, of Dillsburg, and formerly of Lewistown, died of natural causes Thursday morning at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. Born April 29, 1916, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Nora (Shade) Lauver. She was the widow of the late Everett E. Vaughn. Surviving are: a son and daughter-in-law, Frank H. & Patsy Vaughn, Dillsburg; a half-brother, Jay Lauver, McClure; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a former beautician, having worked in Lewistown and Mechanicsburg, where she had her own shop at the William's Grove Park. She was also a retired employee of the former Duplex Printing, Dillsburg, and a member of Red Mount United Methodist Church, East Berlin. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cocklin Funeral Home, Inc., 30 N. Chestnut St., Dillsburg, with the Rev. Thomas Shatto officiating. Friends may call noon until the service in Dillsburg. Also, friends may call 10-11a.m. Tuesday at the Heller Hoenstine Funeral Home, 108 1st Ave., Burnham. Interment will be in Vira United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Red Mount United Methodist Church, 1495 Kunkles Mill Road, Lewisberry, PA 17339.
PENN HILLS - John R. Vento, 44, of Penn Hills, died on Wednesday, June 13, 2001. Born Dec. 23, 1956, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of John A. and Dorothy Vento of Penn Hills. His former wife, Sue Burkholder of Lewistown, survives. Also surviving are: a son Jared Vento of Lewistown; two sisters, Maribeth Laurie and Johnetta Artinger, both of Pittsburgh; and two nieces and two nephews. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the William F. Gross Funeral Home, LTD., 11735 Frankstown Rd., Penn Hills. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Susanna Church, with Father Martin Barkin officiating. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Penn Hills. Memorial contributions can be made to Sacred Heart Angel Fund for Jared Vento, 110 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
PORT ROYAL - Leslie R. Vernon, 89, of Brookline Village, Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Port Royal, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born May 4, 1911, in Markelsville, Perry County, he was the son of the late Isaac and Annie (Burrell) Vernon. His wife, Fern E. (Fosselman) Vernon, preceded him in death on July 1, 1996. Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Linda) Towsey, Port Royal RR3, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Vernon, and one sister, Arlene R. Miller. He was a storekeeper at McCoysville and Pleasant View for many years. He was a member of Port Royal United Methodist Church, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Juniata Valley Forest No. 88 and a 50-year member of Newport Lodge No. 381 of F&AM. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Frank Swartz officiating. Interment will be in the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service Sunday at the funeral home. The family will provide all funeral flowers and memorial contributions may be made to the Port Royal United Methodist Church, Fifth Street, Port Royal, PA 17082.
CENTRE HALL - Bernard H. Vogt, 70, of Centre Hall, died Aug. 2, 2001, at his home. Born on Oct. 17, 1930, in Centre Hall, he was the son of the late Edward C. Vogt Sr. and Cecil Simonson. His wife, Nancy Watts, whom he married on June 26, 1948, in Spring Mills, survives. Also surviving are: two daughters, Sue Anne Vogt, El Mirage, AZ and Tammy Bostian, Hanover; a son, Bernard Scott, Centre Hall; a sister, Betty Smith, Cathedral City, CA; a brother, Floyd Vogt, Baltimore, MD; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a 1949 graduate of Centre Hall-Potter High School and attended Lock Haven State University, where he was a member of the soccer team. He played professional baseball from 1949 to 1952 with the Pirate and Dodger organizations. Later, he played baseball for Centre Hall in the Centre County Baseball League. He was a finish carpenter at Penn State University. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Centre Hall and the Centre Hall Fire Company. He was also an avid Lionel train enthusiast. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Church of Christ, Centre Hall, with the Rev. Leigh Pick officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ Roof Fund, P.O. Box 212, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
Arlene M. "Rene" Wagner, 88, formerly of Cuba Mills, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin. She was the widow of Harry M. Wagner Sr. Her service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.
GRANVILLE - Clarence W. Wagner, 88, of 71 Goss Road, Lewistown, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at the Malta Home, Granville. Born Jan. 3, 1913 in Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Jacob E. and Nancy (Culbertson) Wagner. His wife Eldora M. Wagner preceded him in death Nov. 26, 1984. Surviving are: children, Clarence W. Wagner Jr., Pelion, SC, Jacob E. Wagner, 73 Goss Road, Lewistown and Harold E. Wagner, 318 Logan St., Lewistown; sisters, Nora Pierce, Glen Rock, Myrtle Painter, Kingsland, TX and Grace Hoffman, Vineland, NJ; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. He had been employed by Fairmont Foods, formerly Abbotts Dairy of Belleville, and had also worked as a carpenter. He was a member of Little Valley Presbyterian Church, Vira, having served as an elder, trustee and a Sunday school teacher. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Little Valley Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Zorn officiating. Interment will be in the Little Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Valley Presbyterian Church, 1392 Vira Road, Lewistown, PA 17044.
MCCLURE - Clyde C. "Butch" Wagner, 92, of McClure, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Ohesson Manor, Lewistown. Born Dec. 12, 1908, in McClure, he was a son of the late Charles Adam and Sallie Jane (Laub) Wagner. His wife, Pearl E. Searer, whom he married in 1934, died Dec. 4, 1995. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Leon "Jim" (Sally) Fisher and Jack Wagner, both of McClure RR2, and Joe Wagner, Middleburg; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mertie Krick and Carrie Wagner in infancy, and five brothers, Roy, Clair, Alfred Sr., Tom and Harry "Hazz" Wagner. He retired in 1973 after 55 years of being an auctioneer. He was the first auctioneer at the Manheim Auto Auction in 1945. He served on the school board of the Midd-West School District during the 1950's. He also served on the McClure High School board of directors when they formed West Snyder High School. He donated the ground to begin the Veterans Memorial Pool in McClure in 1951 and he was instrumental in starting the McClure Little League during the late 1940's, by providing an area for the field. He was a member of Mount Bethel United Church of Christ, McClure. He was also a member the McClure Bean Soup Committee during from the early years until 1993; a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge 619, Middleburg; the Shriners and Tall Cedars; the McClure Rod and Gun Club; the American Legion Post 942, McClure; and the McClure Fire Company. He enjoyed hunting, Canadian fishing and being around people. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Mount Bethel United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Donald Wise officiating. Interment will be in the McClure Union Cemetery. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. today, at the Aurand Funeral Homes, North Brown Street, McClure, where the family will he present from 7-9 p.m. There will be a masonic service at 8:45 p.m. provided by Lodge 619, Middleburg. Memorial contributions may be made to: Mount Bethel United Church of Christ, the Veterans Memorial Pool or the McClure Little League, McClure, PA 17841.
