Joseph A. 'Banana Man' Maisano
LEWISTOWN - Joseph A. "Banana Man" Maisano, 87, of 733 W. Sixth St., Lewistown, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999, at the Lewistown Hospital.

Born May 16, 1911, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Concetta (Bofetta) Maisano. His wife, Cecelia Korotko, whom he married in 1935, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Mrs. John (Joanne) Kopchik, South Carolina, Mrs. Charles "Tim" (Jeanette) Aumiller Jr., Lewisberry, Julia Maisano, Texas, and Mrs. Jeffery (Rose) Curry, Lewistown; brother and sisters, Anthony Maisano, Virginia Hampton, and Frances Scordo, all of Tyrone; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two infant daughters.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He sold bananas for Cosmo Mannino for 41 years and later owned and operated Joe's Produce for 33 years.

He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Lewistown; the Lewistown Moose Lodge 143, where he was past governor; the American Legion Post 287, Milroy; the Lincoln Club, Philipsburg; the Knights of Columbus, Lewistown; and the Moose Legion 41 in Keystone.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Marickovic officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tyrone.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, where there will be a Scripture Reading at 8:45 p.m.

Paul R. Maize Jr.
EAST WATERFORD - Paul R. Maize Jr., 16, of East Waterford, died of natural causes at 10:26 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2000 in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital.

Born Aug. 18, 1983 in Lewistown, he was a son of Paul R. and Byrl (Slagle) Maize Sr., who survive.

Also surviving are: three brothers, Dennis E. Maize, Elliottsburg, James E. Maize, Butler and Gerald W. Casner, Honey Grove RR1; two sisters, Ellen L. Huff, Annville and Jennifer J. Hockenberry, Newport; and maternal grandmother, Margaret Slagle, Orbisonia.

He was a member of Cross Keys Church of God, the youth group of the church and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

He enjoyed tending game birds and swimming.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cross Keys Church of God with Pastor Lanny J. Hoover officiating. Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, c/o Rebecca Zeiders, RR3 Box 932, Mifflintown, Pa. 17059.

Dr. Donald Cameron Malcolm
ALEXANDRIA - Dr. Donald Cameron Malcolm, 91, of 511 Main St., Alexandria, died unexpectedly at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.

Born Jan. 5, 1908, in Indiana, Pa., he was a son of the late Walter Younger and Sarah (Archibald) Malcolm. His wife, Phyllis M. (Lantzer) Malcolm, whom he married March 15, 1952, in Winchester, Va., survives.

Also surviving are: children, Walter Y. Malcolm, Lewistown, Mrs. Gary (Mary Katherine) Fairchild, Lewisburg, and J. "Randy" Updyke, Charleston, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Ann Malcolm, in 1946; and three brothers and two sisters, Douglas Malcolm, Harry Malcolm, W. Thomas Malcolm, Katherine Malcolm and Winona Malcolm.

He was a 1926 graduate of Indiana High School, a 1930 graduate of W&J College, and a graduate of Cornell Medical School, New York City. He served his internship and residency at Mercy Hospital, Harlem, New York City, N.Y.

He entered the U.S. Army as a captain in 1942. He served for a short time in military hospitals in the U.S. and then in London during the bombing campaign. He later joined the Fifth Armored Division, where he was in charge of a medical field unit during the invasion of France. He continued with this division until World War II ended in 1945.

He was instrumental in the construction of the Juniata Valley Medical Center, which was completed in 1972. He was a staff physician at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. He retired from public practice in 1974, and saw his last patient Nov. 30, 1987. He was also team physician for the Juniata Valley athletic department.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Alexandria; the Pennsylvania Medical Society; the American Medical Society; the Juniata Valley Lions Club, where he was a charter member and past president; the Alexandria Sportsman's Association, where he had served as president and treasurer for a number of years; the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Company, where he had participated in the reorganization of the company in the late 1930s; the Juniata Valley School Board, where he had served as president and a member; and a former member of Blue Lodge F&AM No. 300, the Jaffa Mosque and Altoona Consistory.

Services will be held at 1 p.m Friday at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria, with the Rev. John C. Dean officiating. Interment will be in Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday and and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the chapel.

Walter Taylor Malcolm
CLEAR SPRING, Md. - Walter Taylor Malcolm, 78, Clear Spring, Md. and a resident of the Homewood Nursing Home, Williamsport, Md., died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at the home.

Born Aug. 31, 1921, in Kiefer, Md., he was a son of the late John Robert and Edith (Day) Malcolm. His wife, Helen V. (Shank) Malcolm, died in 1987.

Surviving are: a daughter, Pamela J. Cottrill, McVeytown; sister and brother, Phyllis Maxine Yetter and Clyde Eugene Malcolm, both of Clear Spring, Md.; three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Louise Malcolm.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp Eighth Army in the European Theatre, where he received the European-African and Middle Eastern Medals with six Bronze Battle Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Unit Badge with four Overseas Service bars.

He was employed with Fairchild Aircraft Industries, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222, Clear Spring, Md.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md., with the Rev. Andy Carr officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, Md.

Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Betty Jane Manahan
LEWISTOWN - Betty Jane Manahan, 74, of 738 Highland Ave., Lewistown, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the Lewistown Hospital.

Born June 11, 1924, in Flint, Mich., she was the daughter of Pearl (Fine) Feigert of Elizabethtown and the late Earl Feigert. Her first husband, William Speer, died in 1961 and her second husband, George T. "Bud" Simpkins, died April 17, 1986. Her third husband, Eugene J. Manahan, whom she married June 25, 1993, survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Cheryl DeWitt, Elizabethtown; a brother, Robert Feigert, Lititz; stepsons, Gary Simpkins, San Diego, Calif. and Michael Manahan, State College; three grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.

She was a graduate of Altoona High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown, where she was on the Board of Trustees, served on the administrative board and finance committee, was financial secretary and an office volunteer.

She was also a member of the Lewistown Chapter 283 Order of the Eastern Star, served as vice-president of the Women's Republican Club, was past president of the Lewistown Hospital Auxiliary, and served as liaison between the auxiliary board and the Hospital Gift Shop, where she also volunteered.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Richard W. Swartz officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to: First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 200 E. Third St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Ralph Leroy Manbeck
MIFFLINBURG - Ralph Leroy Manbeck, 92, of 126 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, formerly of Lewisburg RR1, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday, June 11, 1999, at Evangelical Community Hospital.

Born Nov. 28, 1906, in Beaver Township, Snyder County, he was a son of the late Ammon Ambrose and Carrie Irene (Gearhart) Manbeck. His wife, Ethel Mae (Eisenhuth) Manbeck, whom he married in Mifflinburg on Nov. 4, 1932, died Aug. 31, 1991.

Surviving are: children, Mrs. Lawrence L. "Larry" (Genevieve E.) Keefer, McAlisterville, Leonard R. Manbeck, Mifflinburg RR3, and Eugene L. Manbeck, Mifflinburg; a sister, Betty V. Powell, Green Valley, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; sisters and brother, Miriam Malinda Mensch on Jan. 31, 1999, Edna Frances Foster on Aug. 7, 1996, Clair Emerson Manbeck on April 19, 1983; step-brother and step-sister, Park Edgar Manbeck on Oct. 25, 1977, and Mabel May Walter.

He was a 1927 graduate of Michigan State Automobile College, Detroit.

He was former owner of Manbeck Motors, Mifflinburg RR1, retiring from the automobile business in 1979.

He was an active church and civic leader and was a member of Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Lewisburg RR1, where he was a member of the church consistory, the church building committee, superintendant of Sunday school, and teacher of the adult Sunday school class.

He served numerous terms on Mifflinburg Borough Council; was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge 370, Mifflinburg; a member of Buffalo Valley Sportsmen's Club, Mifflinburg RR1; a 58-year member of Susquehanna Valley Automobile Club, Sunbury; and a member of American Association of Retired Persons.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dreisbach United Church of Christ, Dreisbach Church Road, Lewisburg RR1, with the Rev. Michael D. Romig officiating. Interment will be in Dreisbach Church Cemetery, Buffalo Township, Union County.

Family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday atthe James L. Schwartz Home for Funerals, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg and Wednesday morning prior to services at the church.

Thomas E. Mancino
LEWISTOWN - Thomas E. Mancino, 68, of 196 S. Main St., Lewistown, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Nov. 30, 1931, in Burnham, he was a son of the late Anthony J. and Agatha Ida (Panunzio) Mancino. His wife, Shirley (Allenbaugh) Mancino of 196 S. Main St., Lewistown, whom he married April 28, 1957, survives.

Also surviving are: a son, Daniel E. Mancino, Wallington, N.J.; sisters, Mrs. James (Grace) Young, Angeline Daulton and Mrs. Kenneth (Natalie) Sowers, all of Lewistown, and Phyllis Jane Daniels, Old Bridge, N.J.; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony J. Mancino.

He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was employed as a service technician for Guerrini Vending Inc., Lewistown from 1954-1980, and was a production employee at Marlette Industries from 1981 until his retirement in 1995.

He was a member of Grace Covenant Church, Lewistown, and a former member of the Siglerville Band.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heller- Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Michael S. Bailey officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery, Burnham. Graveside military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown.

Friends may call 7-9 pm. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Covenant Church, 205 Washington Ave., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Freddie B. Manning
CARLISLE - Freddie B. Manning, 62, of 338 N. College St., Carlisle, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Born Dec. 25, 1936, in Meridian, Miss., she was the daughter of Ora B. Jennings of Carlisle and the late Fred W. Jennings. Her husband, Howard L. Manning Sr., survives.

Also surviving are: children, Linda A. Manning, Vanessa L. Brown, Phyllis J. Wallace, Barbara K. Carpenter, and Howard L. Manning Jr., all of Carlisle; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three grandchildren.

She was educated at Lewistown High School and received her GED from the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) in 1970.

She retired after 21 years as a clerk for the Book-of-the-Month Club Inc., Mechanicsburg.

She was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Carlisle, where she was ordained the first female deacon. She was a former member of the sanctuary choir, a member of the Rachel H. Davis Missionary Circle, a member of the Robert C. Gaskill Library Committee, a Sunday school teacher of the primary class, and coordinator of Sunday morning devotions. She was also active in child evangelism.

Services will be held at 12 noon Friday at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, corner of North West and Lincoln Streets, Carlisle, with the Rev. Dr. William E. Jones officiating. Interment will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, West Pennsboro Township.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Ronan Funeral Home, 255 York Road, Carlisle and from 11 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Building Fund of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 409 North West Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
