D. Scott Barger
BELLEVILLE - D. Scott Barger, 89, of Valley View Terrace, Belleville, formerly of Depot Street, Lewistown, died at 8:47 a.m. Friday, March 19, 1999, at Valley View Haven, Belleville.
Born May 9, 1909, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Jesse C. and Virginia (Bishop) Barger. His wife, Madeline N. (Washburn) Barger, whom he married Dec. 24, 1932, survives.
Also surviving are: a son, John S. Barger, Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Naomi Elliott, West Sixth Street, Lewistown; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
He had worked for the American Viscose Corporation for 44 years, retiring in 1973. He was a messenger for First National and Central Counties Banks from 1973-1983.
He was a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, where he was in the Men's Bible Class, was an elder, a deacon, and served on the board of trustees.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Linda K. Hendrian officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville.
Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the church.

Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph F. Barrett
MOUNT UNION - Joseph F. Barrett, 74, of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, and formerly of 309 S. Jefferson St., Mount Union, died at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born Jan. 6, 1925, in State College, he was a son of the late Joseph T. and Edna (Frye) Barrett. His wife, Maxine E. (Yocum) Barrett, whom he married Aug. 23, 1946, survives.
Also surviving are: children, Mrs. William (Patricia L.) Summers and Joseph C. Barrett, both of Mount Union, and Mrs. Michael (Cathy) Barrett Sroka, Carlisle; a sister, Patricia Deubler, Auburn, Kan.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, C.F. "Dutch" Norton.
He was a 1942 graduate of Mount Union High School, and received a bachelor of science degree from Dickinson College, Carlisle, in 1950. He received a teaching certificate from Juniata College and completed graduate work at Penn State University.
He was a World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He had participated in the South Pacific Theatre of Operations and been decorated with three air medals.
He retired as an English teacher from the former Chief Logan High School after 14 years of service in 1976. Also, he and his wife owned and operated Barrett's Grocery, Mount Union, for 38 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mount Union.
He was a life member of American Legion Post 107, Mount Union, and a member of the Mount Union Lions Club and the Rotary Club when it was active in Mount Union. He was a former member of the Mount Union Area School Board, and was an avid baseball fan.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Private services will be held at Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon officiating and Joseph Barret, his son, assisting. Interment will be in Mount Union Cemetery.

Frank H. Barth
MIFFLINTOWN - Frank H. Barth, 87, of Mifflintown RR2 (East Salem), died at 3:07 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Lewistown Hospital.
Born April 30, 1912, in Virginia, he was the son of the late Frank and Martha Jane (Fogleman) Barth. His first wife, Almeda L. (VanHorn) Barth, whom he married March 31, 1938, died Dec. 28, 1965. His second wife, Florence Mae (Lawson) Kirk Barth, a resident of Brookline Manor Convalescent Rest Home, Mifflintown RR1, whom he married Aug. 10, 1968, survives.
Also surviving are: a brother, Paul A. Strawser, Liverpool RR2; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Edgar Barth, Cloyd Barth, Roy Barth, Margaret Kerchner, Edgar Strawser, Lee Strawser, Howard Strawser, and Celia Naylor.
He operated a small grain farm and also was a farmer and orchardman for several other area farms. He was also employed as a janitor for J.L. Shellenberger & Sons, East Salem.
He was a member of the East Salem United Methodist Church, where he was past trustee and administrative council member. He was also a member of the Juniata County Republican Committee, the Delaware Township and Thompsontown Fire Companies.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Dr. John C. Libert officiating. Interment will be in the East Salem Cemetery, Thompsontown RR1.
Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 7-9 p.m.

William W. Bassler
CENTRAL CITY - William W. Bassler, 38, of Central City, died of natural causes, Thursday, March 25, 1999, at home.
Born Oct. 12, 1960, in Somerset, he was the son of Ronald C. and Marilyn (Krishak) Bassler and the late Doris (Blanset) Bassler.
Also surviving are: brothers and sisters, Mrs. Daryl (Denise) Brubaker, Juniata County, Richard Bassler, Mrs. James (Dianne) Haines, Susan Bassler, Galen Fulton Jr., and Terri Fulton; maternal grandmother, Myrtle E. Lape; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a self-employed artist and meat cutter.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Services were held at the Mulcahy Funeral Home, Central City, with the Rev. Robert Geer officiating. Interment was in 100F Cemetery, Stoystown.

Robert Nelson Batt
MT. VERNON, Ark. - Robert Nelson Batt, 61, of Mt. Vernon, Ark., died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at McClellan Veterans Hospital, Little Rock, Ark.
Born July 8, 1938, in Yeagertown, he was the son of the late Thelma Rose Batt Plank. He was raised by his grandparents, the late John and Anne Batt. His wife, Betty Alene (Sorenson) Batt, whom he married July 29, 1967, survives.
Also surviving are: children, Linda France, Mt. Vernon, Ark., Glen Batt, Jacksonville, Fla., Timothy Batt, Holland, Ark., and David Batt, Conway, Ark.; sisters and brother, Mary Ann Chenoweth, Baltimore, Md., Roberta Snyder, Newton Hamilton, and John Plank, North Beach, Md.; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Batt, Jr.
He graduated from Chief Logan High School in 1957.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957 and served with Squadrons VAH2, VA174, VA87, NAS Cecil Field. He served on the USS Coral Sea, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, USS Ranger and the USS Midway. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving three times in that area. He retired from the Navy with 20 years service.
He was a board member of the St. Mary's Chapel of Rosebud, Ark., a past worth Master of Cadron Creek Masonic Lodge 736, the York Rite Bodies of Arkansas., the Scottish Rite Valley of Little Rock, the Scimitar Temple Shrine, the Faulkner County Shrine Club, and the Bedouins Chapter 532 Order of Eastern Star.
Funeral services and masonic rites were held July 3 at the Griffin Leggett-Conway Funeral Home, 1751 Highway 286 West, Conway, Ark.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Cadron Creek Masonic Lodge 736, P0 Box 124, Mt. Vernon, AK. 72111.

Shirley J. Baum
MIFFLIN - Shirley J. Baum, 60, of HCR67, Mifflin, died Monday evening, April 26, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 28, 1938, in Johnstown, she was the daughter of the late Percy W. and Hulda M. (Yeater) Bennett. Her husband, Richard E. Baum Sr., died June 16, 1973.
Surviving are: children, Richard L. Earhart, Honey Grove RR1, William L. Baum and John M. H. Baum, both of HCR67, Mifflin, Patricia M. Claybaugh, Duncannon, and Donna R. Arentz, Mifflin; a sister, Virginia Dixon, Ebensburg; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She had worked as a waitress at Stop 35 Restaurant, Mifflintown.
She attended Cornerstone Community Church, Mexico, Pa.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with Pastor Albert Gray officiating. Interment will be in Union Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Mifflintown.
Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 7-9 p.m.

Mary M. Baumgardner
NEW GERMANTOWN - Mary M. Baumgardner, 85, of New Germantown, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at her home.
Born Dec. 28, 1914, in Reedsville, she was a daughter of the late Franklin Charles Harrison and Anna Mae (Emery) Hackenberry. Her husband, Carl Edward Baumgardner Sr., preceded her in death.
Surviving are: children, Carl E. Baumgardner Jr., Elizabethville, Beatrice C. Dewees, Biglerville, Sharon D. Shoop, Bainbridge, and Jo Ann Bistline, New Germantown; sisters, Ilah Tomlinson, Mansfield, Claire Vaughn, Cora Ritter, Josephine Cossack, all of Lewistown, Anna Mae Harpster, McVeytown, and Betty Lou McCardle, Westminster, Md.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Margaret E. Baxter
MILROY - Margaret E. Baxter, 95, of 54 Liane St., Milroy, died at 4:20 a.m. Friday, June 18, 1999, at Lewistown Hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1903, in McKean, she was a daughter of the late James Earl and Susie( Stevens) Bates.
Her husband, Maylon H. Baxter, died in 1969.
Surviving are: daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Evelyn) Wunz of 54 Liane St., Milroy; sister, Isabelle Thurston, Erie; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church, Erie, and the Betsey Ross Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Erie.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Milroy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arland Romberger officiating.
There will be no public viewing.
Graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. July 10 at Erie Cemetery, Erie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Milroy United Methodist Church, Main Street, PA 17063.
The Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
