LEWISTOWN - Charles H. Herbster, 71, of Roosevelt Avenue, Lewistown, died at 3:07 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born March 24, 1929, in Beavertown, he was the son of Neda Jane (Zechman) Herbster of Valley View, Belleville and the late Charles C. Herbster, who also died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000. His wife, Lois Juanita (Smith) Herbster, whom he married June 22, 1957, survives. Also surviving are: children, Thomas E. Herbster, Dubois, Andrew J. Herbster, Cheryl L. Herbster, and Jeffery S. Herbster, all of Lewistown, and Rosemary D. Campbell, Newport; a sister, Jean C. Norman, Beavertown; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew T. Herbster and a daughter, Beth Anne Herbster. He was a 1947 graduate of Lewistown High School. He served in the United States Navy. He was employed by Newel Ford Company, Kamper's Korner, Cape Fear Toyota in North Carolina, Village Auto House in Selinsgrove, and for Seda-Council of Governments, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the National Rifleman's Association, and the Stoney Lonesome Hunting Lodge. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St.., Lewistown, with the Rev. Dale Hippensteel officiating. Interment will be private. BEAVERTOWN - Glenn J. Herbster, 82, of Beavertown RR1, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg. Born Oct. 26, 1918, in Troxelville, he was a son of the late James and Bessie (Steininger) Herbster. His wife, Ola Jean (Bailey) Herbster, whom he married March 25, 1940, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Ronald (Marjorie J.) Baker, Lewistown, Mrs. David (Linda M.) Herrold, Selinsgrove RR1, Sandra L. Seaholtz, Sunbury, and Richard E. Herbster, Duncannon; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Cloyd, Bruce, Park and Donald Herbster; and two sisters, Augusta Herbster and Dorothy Mitchell. He was educated at Seese School. He was a farmer and earlier in life, he was employed by Bethlehem Steel, Harrisburg, Reigle's Mill, Paxtonville and National Limestone Quarry, Middleburg. He attended St. Peter's Independent Church, Beavertown RR1 and formerly attended Salem Independent Brethren Church, Middleburg, where he was a Sunday School superintendent for 25 years. He was a life member of the Beavertown Fire Company, a member of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America, and he served as a Beaver Township supervisor. He enjoyed deer hunting and woodworking. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, with the Rev. James Plank and the Rev. Darvin Reich officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Beavertown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. COCOLAMUS - Shirley Ann "Shirl" Herrick, 38, of HCR 63, Cocolamus, died of natural causes, at 1:34 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 3, 1962, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of James R. and Miriam (Brubaker) Kauffman of Middleburg RR1. Her husband, Brent Robert Herrick, whom she married Dec. 10, 1988, survives. Also surviving are: sons, Zachary B. Herrick, Wade A. Herrick, Lynford R. Herrick, Colby R. Herrick, and Vincent B. Herrick, all at home; brothers and sisters, Richard Kauffman of Ulster, Gerald Kauffman of Middleburg RR1, Donald Kauffman of Millmont RR1, Mrs. Merl (Carol) Yoder, Bittinger, Md. and Mrs. Joseph (Judy) Yoder, Lewisburg RR1. She graduated in 1979 from the Penn View Christian Academy, Penns Creek, where she was the valedictorian of her class. She had taught at a Christian school in Reading following her graduation. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crafting, and was especially talented at cake decorating, especially wedding cakes. She was a member of the Richfield Evangelical Methodist Church, HCR 72, Richfleld, and was a member of the Young Adult Sunday School Class. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Richfield Evangelical Methodist Church, HCR 72, Richfield, with Pastor Roy R. McCarty officiating. Interment will be in the Evangelical Methodist Cemetery, Richfield RR1. Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the church. The George P. Garman Funeral Home Inc., Mount Pleasant Mills, is in charge of arrangements.
MIDDLEBURG - Geraldine E. Herrold, 76, of Middleburg RR1, died at 3:20 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2000, at Manor Care, Dallastown, where she had been a resident for the past two years. Born Jan. 16, 1924, in Hummels Wharf, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Sally E. (Hile) Reichenbach. Her husband, Joseph W. Herrold, Middleburg RR1, whom she married Aug. 22, 1942, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Sharon L. Deppen, Herndon; a son, Arthur J. Herrold, Dallastown; a brother, Arthur D. Reichenbach, Selinsgrove; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a 1942 graduate of Selinsgrove High School. She was a homemaker. Earlier in life, she was involved as a Cub Scout leader. She played the piano and enjoyed crocheting, sewing, flowers and gardening. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with the Rev. Thomas Schroeder officiating. Interment will be in the Troxelville Union Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. till the time of services Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the St. Johns UCC, 161 North Main St., Red Lion, PA 17356.
PORT ROYAL - Eleanor Beaver Hertzler, 87, of Port Royal RR1, died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at the home of her daughter in Arnold, Md. Born Oct. 23, 1913, in Port Royal, she was a daughter of the late Samuel S. Beaver and Margaret (Frankhouse) Beaver Lyter, who died Aug. 18, 1999. Her husband, John G. Hertzler, whom she married in 1942, died in 1976. She is survived by children, Pat Hertzler, Port Royal RR1, Sue Freeman, Arnold, Md. and John G. Hertzler Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, Richard Beaver, Thompsontown; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Beaver, who was killed in an airplane accident in 1945 while in the Army; stepfather, George C. Lyter; and stepbrother, William Lyter. She was a 1931 graduate of Port Royal High School and a 1935 graduate of Wilson College, Chambersburg. She began her career in education by teaching French, Latin, physical education, and vocational education at Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown from 1935-1943. While accompanying her husband in the Air Force, she continued her career by teaching Air Force Institute classes in Okinawa; edited technical manuals for Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Neb.; supervised teachers and taught French in the University of Maryland classes for the Air Force personnel in Casablanca, Morocco; and retired in 1974 after teaching Latin and French for 16 years in Prince George's County, Maryland. She enjoyed reunions with former Juniata Joint students. She was a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Marton J. Roberson officiating. Interment will be in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Visitation with closed casket will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Port Royal Lutheran Church, PO Box 267, Port Royal, PA 17082-0267 or to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.
LEWISTOWN - Helen D. Hertzler, 90, a resident of Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, formerly of 535-B South Wayne St., Lewistown, died at 6:43 a.m. Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the nursing home. Born Aug. 1, 1909, in McVeytown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Carrie (Rupert) Dunmire. Her husband, Dale Hertzler, died March 19, 1976. Surviving are: children, Nelson B. Hertzler, Lewistown and Mrs. Jack (Jo Anne) Stuckey, Mifflinburg; a sister, Mary Dehart, 535-B South Wayne St., Lewistown; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles "Ed" Hertzler on July 6, 1998; five brothers; two sisters and one great-grandson. She was employed by the American Viscose, retiring in 1972 with 36 years of service. She was a member of the Spring Run Church of the Brethren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Jerry Lee Miller officiating. Interment will be in the Spring Run Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
LEWISTOWN - Marjorie E. Hess, 73, of 427 S. Grand St., Lewistown, died at 7:34 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born May 4, 1927, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late George and Esther (Rager) Brown. Her husband, W. Leroy Hess of 427 S. Grand St., Lewistown, survives. Also surviving are: sons, Steven Fackender and Michael Fackender, both of Lewistown; a stepson and stepdaughter; brothers and sisters, George W. Brown, 89 Pine Drive, Lewistown, Oscar R. Brown, 53 Bluebird Drive, Lewistown, Barbara Stringfellow, 166 N. River Road, Lewistown, and Helen Gasper, Snow Shoe; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Leroy W. Hess. She was a 1946 graduate of Lewistown High School. She was the bookkeeper for Lewistown Cabinet Company for many years. Private graveside services will be held at Juniata Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating. There will be no public viewing. Hoenstine Funeral Homes Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
MATTAWANA - Elva C. Hesser, 82, of Open Door Personal Care Home, Mattawana, formerly of Longfellow, died at 3:17 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 16, 1917, in Oliver Township, she was the daughter of the late Caleb A. and Tillie A. (Miller) Harshbarger. Her husband, F. Ray Hesser, whom she married Sept. 23, 1944, died Feb. 18, 1984. Surviving are: children, Fern E. Moist Sr., McVeytown RR2, Mrs. John (Sarah Jane) Allison, Reedsville, Frederick R. Hesser Jr. and Franklin N. Hesser, both of Lewistown RR2; brothers and sisters, Samuel Harshbarger, Mount Union RR1, Lorma Moist, McVeytown RR2, Wilbur Harshbarger, Mifflintown RR1, Mary Knepp, Huntingdon RR3, and Bessie Ronk, McVeytown; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, three sisters, and two grandchildren. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Pine Glen Church of the Brethren and the Work and Win Sunday School Class. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Donald E. Peters Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana. Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Pine Glen Church of the Brethren, 61 Pine Glen Road, Lewistown, PA 17044.
