Madaline E. Van Sweringen
CAMP HILL - Madaline E. Van Sweringen, 95, of Beverly Healthcare-Camp Hill Care Center, 46 Erford Road, Camp Hill, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, died at 7:50 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at the center.

Born Sept. 9, 1904, in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late J. Harvey and Anna B. (Jacobs) Noss. Her husband, John F. Van Sweringen, died Jan. 10, 1961.

Surviving are: a son, John C. Van Sweringen, Vandergrift; a daughter, Maxine E. Yetter, Mechanicsburg; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, John C. Noss and Jacob Harvey Noss; and three sisters, Anabel Fettig, Mildred Helen Book Weaver and Myra Apple.

She was a 1922 graduate of Port Royal High School and a member of Shiremanstown United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. John A. Ile officiating. Interment will be in McCullough's Mills Cemetery.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, 125 E. Main St., Shiremanstown, PA 17011 or to Hospice of Central Pa., 985 Enola Drive, Enola, PA 17025.

Elsie I. Varner
MCALISTERVILLE - Elise I. Varner, 79, of McAlisterville RD 1, died at 6:40 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Lewistown Hospital.

Born Feb. 29, 1920, in Belltown, she was a daughter of the late Harrison Lee and Carrie A. (Snook) Shawver. Her husband, Amos A. Varner, whom she married Oct. 28, 1978, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Norman Shawver, 241 Mail Pouch Road, McClure, Clair Shawver, Berry's Personal Care, Mifflintown, and Guy W. Krepps, Mifflintown; stepchildren, Palmer Varner, Thompsontown, Philip Varner, Oakland Mills, George Varner, Mifflintown, and Mrs. Larry (Mae) Miller, Hooversville; sister, Mrs. Donald (Fay) Kauffman, San Leandro, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Guy W. Krepps, a son, James Shawver, four brothers and two sister.

She was a seamstress for the Arrow Shirt Factory, retiring in 1981.

She was a member of the Church of the Open Door, Richfield.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., with the Rev. Richard Von Neida and the Rev. Joe Hegg officiating. Interment will be in Little Valley Presbyterian Cemetery, Vira.

Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m Sunday at the funeral home.

Naomi M. Varner
MCALISTERVILLE - Naomi M. Varner, 49, of McAlisterville RR1, died of natural causes at 5:10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Hershey Medical Center. Born April 19, 1950, in Thompsontown, she was a daughter of Lawrence and Elsie Mae (Hart) Benner of McAlisterville RR1. Her husband, Alan E. Varner, whom she married Nov. 29, 1969, survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Jason (Angela) Husler, Newport; sister and brother, Mrs. Roy (Nancy) Potter, McAlisterville HC 63, and Gary L. Benner, McAlisterville RR2; and maternal grandmother, Tessie Hart of Brookline Retirement Village, Mifflintown RR1.

She was a 1968 graduate of East Juniata High School and a 1970 graduate of Thompson Institute.

She was a bookkeeper at Juniata Kitchens Inc., Mifflintown.

She was a member of Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, where she was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and past deacon. She was also president of the Juniata County Cultural Arts Committee.

Private funeral services will be held Wednesday at Bunkertown Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Woody Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Goodwill Cemetery, Bunkertown.

A public memorial service will also be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Woody Johnson officiating.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Bunkertown Church Building Fund, RR1, Box 765, McAlisterville, PA 17049.

Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.

William L. Varner
MCALISTERVILLE - William L. Varner, 73, McAlisterville RR2, died at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at the Lewistown Hospital.

Born July 6, 1926, in McAlisterville, he was a son of the late Clinton P. and Laura (Jones) Varner. His wife, Patricia K. (Kugel) Varner, whom he married Sept. 17, 1959, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Frances W. Flemming, Mt. Holly, NJ, James Michael Flemming, Pennsville, NJ, Melissa L. Houser, Polo, Mo. and Keith W. Varner, McAlisterville RR2; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Foster Varner, Jack Varner, Mable DeLancey, Pearl Schmitt, Grace Prettyman, Irene Jones, Dora Applegit, and Myrtle Gearhart.

He attended McAlisterville area schools.

He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946.

He retired in 1979 after 20 years of service as an inspector for Chrysler Motors, Newark, Del.

He was a member of the Millerstown Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of Harrisburg VFW Post 148.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.

Friends may call from noon until the time of the services Saturday at the funeral home.

Bertha K. Vaughan
ORBISONIA - Bertha K. Vaughan, 88, a resident of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, formerly of Hazel Edwards Estate, Burnt Cabins and of HC 60, Orbisonia, died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, March 7, 1999, at the center.

Born Nov. 19, 1910, in Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late David R. and Jane (Hoffman) Smith. Her husband, Homer C. Vaughan, whom she married June 18, 1935, died Nov. 15, 1990.

Surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Badger, Simi Valley, Calif. and Mrs. William (Pearl J.) Morgan, HC 60, Orbisonia; sisters, Mary N. Krugh, Transfer, Lela G. Vaughan, Westminster, Md., Catherine Krugh and Elsie M. Donaldson, both of HC 60, Orbisonia; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; and a niece raise in the home, Mrs. Lee (Carol) Worthy, Mount Union RR2.

She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Jaymes N. Smith, Ellsworth E. Smith, Ola J. Lauver, John H. Smith, Raymond R. Smith, and Genevieve D. Harman.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Valley Point Church of the Brethren in Blacklog Valley, where she was a member of the Women's Aide. She later attended the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Mount Union.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. William Wollett officiating. Interment will be in the Bryan Run Cemetery in Upper Blacklog Valley.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Blanch I. Varner
MCALISTERVILLE - Blanch I. Varner, 81, McAlisterville RR2, died at 2:44 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital, as a result of injuries suffered in an auto-pedestrian accident.

Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Honey Grove, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Effie (Smith) Arnold. Her husband, Lee Varner, whom she married in 1942, died in 1993. She is survived by a companion, Arthur Smith, McAlisterville.

Also surviving are: children, Donald C. Varner and Ruth Ferster, both of Mifflintown, Leona L. Foltz, Samuel J. Varner, and Gary L.Varner, all of McAlisterville and Faye V. Boaz, McVeytown; brothers and sister, Samuel Arnold, Port Treverton RR1, Robert Arnold, Mount Pleasant Mills, and Edna Bachman, Port Treverton; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Charles Arnold, Jesse Arnold, Ralph Arnold, Dorothy Arnold and Betty Dillman.

She was employed as a seamstress at the McAlisterville and the East Salem Garment factories from 1961 until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where she had been a children's Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Administrative Board and the United Methodist Women.

She enjoyed flowers and gardening.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's United Methodist Church, McAlisterville RR1, with the Rev. Ronald E. Landis and the Rev. C. Richard Beach officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. today at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, where the family will be present from 7-9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to: St. John's United Methodist Church, RR2, Box 2395, McAlisterville, PA 17049.

Ivan N. Vdov
BELLEVILLE - Ivan N. Vdov, 77, of 210 Second St., Belleville, died at 2:21 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, in the emergency room of Centre Community Hospital, State College.

Born June 10, 1922, in the Ukraine, he was a son of the late Nikita and Pheodosiya Vdov. His wife, Galina P. (Ponomar) Vdov, whom he married Oct. 7, 1950, survives.

Also surviving are: children, Antonina Oganesov and Mrs. Vasiliy (Olga) Ivanchenko, both of Belleville, Alexander Vdov, Russia, Vasiliy Vdov, McVeytown, Peter Vdov, Bellefonte, and Mrs. Andrey (Oksana) Podgaysky, Boston, Mass.; one brother and one sister; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was a finish carpenter.

He attended Pleasant View Amish-Mennonite Church in Belleville, and held memberships at the Russian Evangelical Church in State College.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant View Amish-Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Alexander Tishchenko and Bishop David Peachey officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. today at the church.

Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, Belleville, is in charge of arrangements.

Freeda M. Venerick
CLEARFIELD - Freeda M. Venerick, 87, of 211 N. W. Fourth Ave., Clearfield, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Mt. Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield.

Born Jan. 31, 1913, in Burnham, she was the daughter of the late Samuel M. and Cloenva Mae (Tini) Summers. Her husband, Paul D. Venerick, died Feb. 1, 1981.

Surviving are: children, J. Edward Venerick, at home, Mrs. George (Judith) Hosheit, Culpeper, Va., and Mrs. Don (Linda) Snyder, Huntingdon, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by a son, Paul Venerick Jr., a daughter, Charlotte Willis; four sisters, Martha Schroyer, Madeline Rupe, Josephine Kelly, and Evelyn Zechman.

She was a homemaker and also had been employed by the Shaw Public Library for many years.

She was a member of the West Side United Methodist Church, where she taught in the junior high department of the church, and was a member of Class 7 of the Sunday school. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and was an active member of R.S.V.P.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, Clearfield, with the Rev. Richard B. Cartwright officiating. Interment will be in the Tusseyville-Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery.
