Melvin Leroy 'Slick' Hesser, Sr.
MCVEYTOWN - Melvin Leroy "Slick" Hesser, Sr., 77, of McVeytown, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2000 at Lewistown Hospital. Born Feb. 18, 1923 in Bratton Township, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Annie R. (Kauffman) Hesser. His wife, Roberta Ann (Grassmyer) Hesser, whom he married June 27, 1981, survives. Also surviving are: children, Melvin Leroy Hesser, Jr. and Norman Leroy Hesser, both of McVeytown; and a brother, Robert B. Hesser, Mattawana. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois R. Hesser, and three brothers, Edward E. Hesser, Norman C. Hesser, and Carl D. Hesser. He was a self-employed carpenter and farmer, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the McVeytown Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, and was a member of the Westminster Sunday School Class. He was also a church custodian for seven years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and had been a pitcher for both the McVeytown and Ryde Twilight baseball teams. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the McVeytown Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jeanette Rapp officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Mattawana. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market Street, McVeytown. Memorial contributions may be made to the McVeytown Presbyterian Church Building Fund, PO Box 323, McVeytown, PA 17051.

George Ernest 'Ernie' Hetrick
LEWISTOWN - George Ernest "Ernie" Hetrick, 83, of 305 Electric Ave., Lewistown, died at 5:13 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Hershey Medical Center. Born March 3, 1917, in Reedsville, he was a son of the late S. Carl and Mae (Hubler) Hetrick. His wife, Sylvia (Amspaker) Hetrick, whom he married July 25, 1937, survives. Also surviving are: children, Glen E. Hetrick, Lewistown and Alan D. Hetrick and Mrs. Richard (Y. Elaine) Cavanaugh, both of New Castle, Del.; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. He worked for 15 years at the Fisher Brothers Bus Company, and previously had worked at the American Viscose Corp., Division FMC spinning department, where he retired in 1972 after 27 years of service. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown. He was also a member of the Lewistown Lodge No. 203 of the Free and Accepted Mason, and a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon No. 88. He was a former member of the Altoona Shrine of the Altoona Consistery. His funeral serivce will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Gerald A. Krum officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

James D. Hicks
LEWISTOWN - James D. Hicks, 57, of 416 Logan St., Lewistown, died at 8:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown. Born Nov. 24, 1942, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Dawson E. and Goldie J. (Munson) Hicks. Surviving are: brothers and sisters, Joseph E. Hicks, Marietta, David R. Hicks, Milroy, and Mrs. George (Linda) McNitt, Lewistown. He was preceded in death by one sister. He worked as a custodian for the Burnham YMCA. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army. He was a member of the City Hook and Ladder Company. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown is in charge of arrangements.

Rebecca W. Hile
MILROY - Rebecca W. Hile, Milroy, 81, of 79 Maple St., Milroy, died at 12:19 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born April 12, 1919, in Milroy, she was the daughter of the late J. Reuben and Georgia E. (Hoar) Wagner. Her husband, Lester B. Hile, whom she married Dec. 24, 1945, survives. She is survived by a son, Sidney B. Hile, 192 Sigler St., Milroy and one granddaughter. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers. She was a 1936 graduate of Milroy High School. She was an office manager for H. B. Goss Candy Co., retiring in 1983 with 22 years of service. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Milroy. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy, with the Rev. Rosalie N. Smith officiating. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 51 Maclay St., Milroy, PA 17063. Hoenstine Funeral Homes Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles W. Hill
LEWISTOWN - Charles W. Hill, 73, of 29 Parkview Ave., Lewistown, died at 7:12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 17, 1927, in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Mildred (Hynes) Hill. His wife, Violet (Lajiness) Hill of 29 Parkview Ave., Lewistown, whom he married April 23, 1955, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Theresa M. Hill, Burnham and Geraldine A. Hill, Lewistown; a sister, Barbara Ann Hill, Warren, Ohio; and one grandson. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and served in the Medical Corps. He was the Health Club Service Director for the YMCA for 35 years, retiring in 1990 from the Somerset YMCA, Summerville, NJ. He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church; a life member of the VFW Post 7011, Lewistown; a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lewistown Lodge 1338, where he was a 4th Degree Knight; a member of the American Legion Post 90; and a member of the Independent Order of Foresters. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Lewistown, with the Rev. Father Thomas Marickovic officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, where graveside military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 7011, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, where Rosary service will be held at 8:30 p.m. and from 10-10:30 a.m. Monday at the Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham. Memorial contributions may be made to: Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 106 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Josephine A. Himes
REEDSVILLE - Josephine A. Himes, 81, of 12 Brooknar Drive, Reedsville, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at Harrisburg Hospital, South Front Street, Harrisburg. Born Oct. 28, 1918, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Pearl (Isenberg) Piper. Her husband, Elwood J. "Pete" Himes, died June 24, 1985. Also surviving are: children, Sandra Lee Miller, Harrisburg and Mrs. Dennis (Denna) Armstrong; sisters and brother, Mrs. William (Jeanette) Kenepp and Betty Yoder, both of McVeytown RR and George Piper, McVeytown; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Rhodes Memorial United Methodist Church, Lewistown and the Builders Sunday School Class of the church. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Rhodes Memorial United Methodist Church, 500 Highland Ave., Lewistown, with the Rev. Thomas B. Morningstar officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. There will be no public viewing, but friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Rhodes Memorial United Methodist Church, 500 Highland Ave., Lewistown, PA 17044. Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Bossert Hitz
HARRISBURG - Virginia Bossert Hitz, 84, a resident of Bethany Village Retirement Village, Mechanicsburg, formerly of Harrisburg, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at the retirement village. Born in Mifflintown, she was a daughter of the late George and Lottie Bossert. Her husband, Stanley Hitz, preceded her in death. Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Pauline, Verna, Christine, Eleanor and Margaret, and also by brothers, George and Samuel. She was a graduate of Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing and was a retired registered nurse for the Camp Curtin School Systems of Harrisburg. She was a member of the Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Harrisburg. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Neill Funeral Home, 3401 Market St., Camp Hill. Interment will be in Rolling Green Cemetery in Lower Allen Township. Friends may call from noon until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 216 State St., Harrisburg, PA 17101.

Silas B. 'Sipe' Hockenberry
PORT ROYAL - Silas B. "Sipe" Hockenberry, 95, formerly of Port Royal RR2, died at 4:25 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born Sept. 12, 1905, in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late John Henry and Maggie Jane (Stong) Hockenberry. His wife, Arrietta Mae (Troutman) Hockenberry, died Sept. 22, 1993. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Gerald (Viola) Miller, Belleville, Erma "Dolly" Messimer, Mifflintown, and Richard S. Hockenberry, Quakertown; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by a son, Donald B. Hockenberry; five brothers, Bruce, James, Charles, Wilson, and Earl Hockenberry; and four sisters, Margaret Brubaker, Mae Arentz, Effie Arentz, and Lottie Wisehaupt. He had worked for the former VanDyke Brick Plant, Juniata County; the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal; and was a former flagman for the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal. He was a life member of the Turbett Grange 781. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Pastor Larry E. Siikanen officiating. Interment will be in the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
