LIVERPOOL - Lawrence Allen "Larry" Hoff, 64, of Liverpool RR1, died at 2:40 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, in RiverWoods, Lewisburg. Born Aug. 9, 1936, in Moorehead, Minn., he was the son of the late Henry "Hank" and Lila (Fevig) Hoff. His wife, Barbara J. (Coleman) Hoff, whom he married Sept. 9, 1961, survives. Also surviving are: sons, David Hoff and Larry Hoff, both at home, and Mike Hoff of Texas; a brother, Richard Hoff, Eagan, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was a 1954 graduate of Moorehead High School and had attended Moorehead State College. He graduated from Interstate Business School in 1958. He served in the Air National Guard and completed further business courses therein; he was discharged with the rank of major after 30 years of service. Early in life, he worked as controller for Kegel Sign Co., Moorehead, Minn., for nine years, then for Cook Sign Co., Fargo, N.D. for several years. In 1985, he went to work for American Homes Technology, Hometown, Pa., where he installed cost accounting systems at several modular home companies in the state. He was CFO of Apex Homes, Middleburg. He was an avid sports fan, and played fast pitch softball for more than 25 years, bowled and played golf. He was active in the Jaycees; the Lions Club; served as cub and boy scout leader; and was instrumental in getting Little League Baseball started in Fargo, N.D. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorehead, Minn., where he was in the church choir and taught Sunday school. After moving to Hazelton, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder. Recently, he attended Beaver Lutheran Church, Beaver Springs. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Beaver Lutheran Church, Route 522, Beaver Springs, with the Rev. Stanley D. Reep officiating. Interment will be in the Liverpool Union Cemetery, where full military honors will be conducted by the Liverpool American Legion Post 364. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills.
MILLERSTOWN - Christine R. Hohenshilt, 79, of Millerstown RR2, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield. Born Sept. 6, 1921, in Millerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Janet (Jones) Ripman. Her husband, George E. Hohenshilt, preceded her in death. Surviving are: children, David E. Hohenshilt, Lehigh Valley, George E. Hohenshilt and Janet Swartz, both of York, and Jean Tuzinski, Millerstown; and five grandchildren. She retired from the former Naval Supply Depot, Mechanicsburg. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Lewistown and the Newport Women's Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, making dolls, and gardening. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at the Highland Presbyterian Church, Newport. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 21 S. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044. The David M. Myers Funeral Home, Newport, is in charge of arrangements.
REEDSVILLE - Raymond H. Hollister, 75, of 88 Church Lane, Reedsville, died at 7:33 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2000, at his residence. Born May 23, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Harvey Hill and Elenor (Hillman) Hollister. His wife, Betty J. (Gordon) Hollister, whom he married Dec. 6, 1958, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Jane A. Hollister, Reedsville; stepson, Thomas G. Okulczyk, Rockwood, Tenn.; sister, Lila Swalwell, Lake Forest Park, Wash.; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Alan Jones and a sister, Marian Neidhardt. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a control operator with Commonwealth Edison of Illinois, retiring in 1981 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown; the American Legion Logan Guard Post 90, Lewistown; the BPO Elks, Lewistown; the Milroy Lions Club; the Milroy American Legion; the VFW; and served many years as a volunteer fireman at Palos Heights, Ill. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. David W. Schmuck officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
MCCLURE - James W. Holzman, 86, of 415 Brower Road, McClure, died at 4:01 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2000, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Born Oct. 20, 1913, in Clementon, N.J., he was the son of the late James Jay and Florence Eliza (Wood) Holzman. His first wife, Elizabeth (Warwick) Holzman, died in 1974. His second wife, Ellen Elizabeth (Armstrong) Kurtz Holzman, whom he married April 24, 1976, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Marcia Lynne Reidel, Port Townsend, Wash. and Bonnie Elizabeth Smith, Mitchellville, Md.; stepchildren, Harold Richard Kurtz and Shea Kurtz, both of McClure, and Nancy Ellen Lavers, Danbury, Conn.; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Daniel Victor Kurtz on May 6, 1995 and a brother, Nathaniel Morris Holzman. He was a mechanical and industrial engineer, retiring from Parish Division of the Dana Corp., Reading in 1972 as chief engineer in charge of product development. He was a member of the Agudath Achim Synagogue, Huntingdon; the St. Mark Lutheran Church, Alfarata; the Decatur Fire Co.; past master of Lewistown Lodge 203 Free & Accepted Masons; the Masonic Consistory, Harrisburg; the Juniata Valley Amateur Radio Club; and the Lewistown Dog Training Club. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. PALMYRA - Grace M. Jones Hood, 98, of 1200 Grubb St., Palmyra, formerly of N. Sixth St., Lebanon, died at 11:55 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, 1200 Grubb St., Palmyra. Born July 26, 1902, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Sciney Sophia (Arnold) and Ibra Evans Jones. Her husband, Fred Hood, preceded her in death Dec. 21, 1979. Surviving are a son, Ronald B. Hood, Lansford, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Leo F. Hood, on Nov. 15, 1993, and by brothers and sisters, Ada Bomberger, Andrew Jones, Harry Jones and James Jones. She was a retired seamstress and garment worker. She was a member of the Lebanon Church of the Brethren, 400 Locust St., Lebanon, and a member of the Reindeer and the Gold Stars. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Christman's Funeral Home Inc., 226 Cumberland St., Lebanon. Interment will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon. FREEBURG - Loretta Beatrice "Tod" Hood, 81, of 108 New East St., Freeburg, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Born Dec. 22, 1918, in New Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Arthur "Barney" and Iva P. (Spangler) Solomon. Her husband, L. Alton "Hoodie" Hood, whom she married Feb. 13, 1975, died July 1, 1989. Surviving are: children, William R. Klinger and Paul E. Hood, both of Middleburg, George E. Pennebaker, Millerstown RR2, Mrs. Michael (Pat L.) Holmes, Liverpool, Janet Williams, Sunbury, Mrs. Ronald (Lois A.) Wirt, Northumberland, and Betty G. Clark, Millersburg; 25 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family and was preceded in death by a son, Richard D. Hood Sr. in 1993; a grandson, Daniel Hood in 1981; a granddaughter, Sherry Swank in 1982, and a brother, Earl E. Solomon in 1989. She was educated in the Mifflinburg rural schools. She and her husband owned and operated Hood's Tavern in Freeburg. She was also employed at several area companies including L'Aiglon, Northumberland; Hotel Middleburger, Middleburg; Nite Kraft; and did seasonal work at the Quarryville Canning Company, Middleburg. She attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Freeburg. She was an accomplished cook, loved to read, host family dinners, and socialize with her patrons of her business. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills, with the Rev. Kathleen M. Kinney officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Freeburg. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
DEATSVILLE, Ala. - Donna K. Hook, 66, of 55 Foxwood Court, Deatsville, Ala., formerly of Lewistown and McAlisterville, died at 11 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, at University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, Birmingham, Ala. Born Feb. 2, 1934, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph G. and Eleanor (Friedly) Mowery. Her husband, Robert L. Hook, died in 1990. Surviving are: children, Mark E. Snyder, Prattville, Ala. and Mrs. Donald (Russellen) Clouser, Loysville; a step-son, Gerald L. Hook, Milroy; brothers and sisters, Francis M. Mowery and Joseph M. Mowery, both of Lewistown, and Robert P. Mowery, Stephens City, Va.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Rosalie Hook Trout. She was employed at Standard Steel, Burnham for more than 20 years in various offices and departments, having retired from the Employment Office. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lewistown, and a member of the United Steelworkers Local 2921. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. Kenneth W. Longfield officiating. Interment will be private in Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown. There will be no public viewing, however, family will receive friends from noon until the time of services Friday at the funeral home. The family will provide all funeral flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to: the Mifflin-Juniata American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
BELLEVILLE - Donald P. Hoover, 81, of 498 Taylor Mill Road, Belleville, died at 12:28 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, Lewistown. Born Jan. 19, 1919, in Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Guy P. and Bertha R. (Savitts) Hoover. His first wife, Bertha R. (Shirk) Hoover, died March 28, 1985, and his second wife, Grace D. (Mellott) Hoover, died March 23, 1999. Surviving are: children, Larry E. Hoover and Harold M. Hoover, both of Lewistown, Mrs. Andrew (Darlis) Guthridge, Mifflinburg, and William P. Hoover, Siglerville; stepchildren, Mrs. Allen (Elaine) Harper, Tyrone, Mrs. Lester (Diane) Goss, Belleville, Mrs. Larry (Donna) Bonson and William J. Mellott, both of Milroy, and George Mellott, Shade Gap; sisters and brother, Christie Hoover, Lewistown, Dorothy Briggs, Huntingdon County, and Gilbert Hoover, Belleville; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. He was an auto mechanic for Big Valley Sales and Service and for Long's Garage. He was a member of Reedsville Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, camping and attending the Belleville sale on Wednesdays. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Baggus Funeral Home, Belleville, with the Rev. Kenneth W. Longfield officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
