LEWISBURG - Rev. Dr. Thomas J. Hopkins, 88, of Lewisburg, formerly of Nanty-Glo, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at RiverWoods Nursing Care Center. Born Nov. 27, 1911, in Nanty-Glo, he was a son of the late Thomas M. and Sarah Ellen (Harrison) Hopkins. His wife, Mary Elizabeth (Brant) Hopkins, whom he married Oct. 7, 1941, died in January 1997. Surviving are: children, Saudra H. Kumpf, Lewisburg RR5 and T. Marshall Hopkins, Lock Haven; a brother, Rev. Henry F. Hopkins, Lewisburg; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. He was a 1929 graduate of Nanty-Glo High School and graduated from Juniata College Magna Cum Laude, in 1937 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in religion and philosophy and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1955. He graduated from Drew Theological Seminary in 1956 with a Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity. During graduate work at Columbia University, he studied with anthropologist, Margaret Meade. He served as secretary of the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church for six years; served on the conference board of trustees and the conference board of education; and was in the President's Circle of Juniata College. During his ministry, he served 11 churches, including the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown. He was also past president of the Lewistown Rotary Club. Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Beaver United Methodist Church, South Third Street, Lewisburg, with the Rev. John J. Dromazos officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Mental Health Association of the Central Susquehanna Valley, 37 W. Main St., Suite 204, Bloomsburg, PA 17815 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Building 2, Suite 321, 2001 N. Front St., Harrisburg, PA 17102. The Cronrath Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg, is in charge of arrangements.
REEDSVILLE - Dorothy E. Horesco, 80, of 75 Estella Drive, Reedsville, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at her residence. Born Dec. 13, 1919, in Derby, Conn., she was a daughter of the late John Francis Sr. and Helen (Merrill) Elwood. Her husband, Francis J. Horesco, died Feb. 16, 1996. She is survived by children, Janis E. Grimmer, Reedsville, Joseph F. Horesco, Derby, Conn., and Jody Caroots, Romulus, Mich.; a brother, John Francis Elwood Jr., Beverly Hills, Fla.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Reedsville and a volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul in Connecticut. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Jenkins-King Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St., Ansonia, Conn. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Shelton, Conn. Memorial contributions may be made to: Reedsville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 E. Logan St., Reedsville, PA 17084. A local memorial service will be announced and held at a later date. Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, is in charge of arrangements.
MCCLURE - Neta E. F. Horne, 87, of McClure RR2, died at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born March 17, 1913, in Ringtown, she was a daughter of the late George E. and Edna Mabel (Long) Fuhrman. Her husband, Claude C. Horne, died in 1996. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Furn (Claudine) Fuhrman, Bethlehem, Mrs. Robert (Edna) Rarich, McClure, and Harry E. Horne, Tolono, IL; stepson, Donald C. Horne, Apopka, FL; brother and sister, M. Emma Hart, Pottstown and George Marlyn Fuhrman, Perkasie; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters. She was a seamstress for 20 years at the Milton Hershey School, Hershey, retiring in 1975. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure and active in many church groups. She was also a member of the McClure Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure, with the Rev. Stanley Reep officiating. Private interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Ringtown. Friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Specht Street, McClure, PA 17841. Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
MIFFLINTOWN - Chester B. Hosler, 78, a resident of Berry's Personal Care Center, Mifflintown RR1, died at 6:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in the Lewistown Hospital. Born June 17, 1922, in Port Royal, he was a son of the late John and Margaret (Casner) Hosler. Surviving are: sons, Stanley and John Hosler, California; a brother, Paul R. Hosler, McAlisterville; sisters, Ruth Fultz, Beaver Springs, Cleo Henry, Lewisberry, Doris Wells, York, and Verna Fuller, Nevada. He was a retired freight truck driver and a member of the Christian Home Fellowship, McAlisterville. There will be no local services. Graveside services and interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Concord, CA. The Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville is handling local arrangements.
LEWISBURG - William R. Hosler, 35, of Lewisburg, died of natural causes, Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, while walking near his home. Born Nov. 12, 1964, in Lewistown, he was the son of Thomas Hosler and Margaret Ann (Partchey) Hosler. His wife of 13 years, Heidi (Schwarz) Hosler, survives. Also surviving are daughters, Sheryl Hosler and Karyn Hosler, both at home. He earned his Bachelor of Science and master's degrees in agriculture at Penn State University. He was on the board of directors of Omicron Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He served as an extension agent for Economic and Community Development with the Penn State Extension for 14 years. He was a hunter and a fisherman. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth Streets, Lewisburg. A private visitation will be for family only. Family will provide all flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to: Hosler Daughter's Scholarship Fund, c/o West Milton State Bank, 2005 Market St., Lewisburg, PA 17837.
REEDSVILLE - Dena Y. Hostetler, 80, of 651 Church Lane, Reedsville, died at 1:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2000 at her residence. Born Jan. 21, 1921 in Union Township, Mifflin County, she was a daughter of the late Abraham J. and Catherine (Yoder) Speicher. Her husband Jacob Y. Hostetler survives. Also surviving are: children, Katie B. Yoder, Samuel Y. Hostetler, Elizabeth S. Yoder, and Miriam S. Yoder, all of Reedsville, Barbara S. Yoder, Belleville, and Daniel Y. Hostetler and Rachel S. Yoder, both of McClure; 56 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, and she was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. She was a member of the Old Order Amish. Her funeral service will be held Saturday. Interment will be in Back Mountain Road Cemetery, Milroy. Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Home, Burnham is in charge of arrangements.
THOMPSONTOWN - Helen M. "Nana" Hostetler, 100, formerly of Lewistown, died at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Meda Nipple Nursing Home, Thompsontown. Born July 23, 1900, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Emma Blanche (Wagner) Earnest. Her first husband, Albert Osborne, died in 1928 and her second husband, Steven Hostetler, died in 1976. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Marie) Grove, Thompsontown; one grandson; three great-granddaughters and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Allen Osborne, two brothers and two sisters. Early in life, she worked at the American Viscose Corporation and retired in 1965 from the Arrow Shirt Factory after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Gospel Chapel Church, Lewistown, where she taught Sunday school. She loved gardening and planting flowers, especially African violets. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with Elder James Folk officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home. Family will provide all flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to: Meda Nipple Nursing Home, Box 109, RR1, Thompsontown, PA 17094.
REEDSVILLE - John A. Hostetler, 52, of 7052 East Back Mountain Road, Reedsville, died at 1:46 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 10, 1947, in Mifflin County, he was the son of Leah F. (Yoder) Hostetler of 100 Long Lane, Reedsville and the late Noah J. Hostetler. His wife, Barbara (Hostetler) Hostetler, whom he married Dec. 11, 1969, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Seth (Naomi B.) Hostetler and Abraham J. Hostetler, both of Milroy, Mrs. Samuel (Elizabeth L.) Hostetler Jr. and Mrs. Eli (Nancy D.) Zook, both of Reedsville, Gideon E. Hostetler and Ezra N. Hostetler, both at home; brothers and sisters, Seth J. Hostetler and Yost E. Hostetler, both of Milroy, Melinda Zook, Belleville, Abie N. Hostetler, Elizabeth M. Hostetler, Mary N. Hostetler, Noah L. Hostetler, Nancy L. Hostetler, and Leah F. Hostetler, all of Reedsville; and 10 grandchildren. He was a farmer and a member of the Old Order Amish. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at the decedent's home at 7052 East Back Mountain Road, Reedsville. Interment will be in the Green Lane Cemetery. Family will receive friends today at the decedent's home. Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, is in charge of arrangements.
