BELLEVILLE - Levi H. Kanagy, 68, of 95 Stone Barn Lane, Belleville, died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, July 22, 2000, at his residence. Born Aug. 10, 1931, in Belleville, he was the son of the late Levi P. and Lidie S. (Peachey) Kanagy. His wife, Judith B. (Swarey) Kanagy, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Abie D. (Emma L.) Kanagy, Steven L. Kanagy, Levi R. Kanagy, and Mrs. Gideon J. (Linda M.) Peachey, all of Belleville; brothers and sisters, Jacob E. Kanagy, Kentucky, Daniel P. Kanagy, Nancy L. Swarey, Lidie S. Kanagy, and Mattie L. Yoder, all of Belleville, Elizabeth C. Bender, Osterburg, and Susie Swarey, Allensville; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Reuben P. Kanagy. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Old Order Amish. Services will be held at 9 a.m. today at the Gideon J. Peachey residence, Belleville, with Bishop Omar A. Peachey and Bishop Louie D. Peachey officiating. Interment will be in Whitehall Amish Cemetery.
BELLEVILLE - Mary M. Kanagy, 84, of Valley View Terrace, Belleville, died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Valley View Terrace. Born Dec. 27, 1915, in Belleville, she was the daughter of the late Samuel K. and Leah B. (Yoder) Yoder. Her husband Jacob Y. Kanagy, died Dec. 31, 1994. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Harold (Esther) Helmuth, Arthur, Ill., Leon Kanagy, Chambersburg, Mrs. Omer (Martha) King, Coatesville, Mrs. Harvey (Dorothy) Hochstettler, Nappanee, Ind., and Betty Yoder, Goshen, Ind.; brothers and sisters, Hilda Stolzfus, Sarasota, Fla., Louie E. Yoder, Belleville, Aquilla "Tobby" Yoder, Intercourse, and Samuel A. Yoder, Gordonville; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sister and brothers, Leah Gentzler, Leroy Yoder, David Yoder, and Jesse C. Yoder. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Big Valley Brethren in Christ Church, Belleville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Valley View Haven Chapel, Belleville, with the Rev. John Keefer and the Rev. Galen Sharp officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, Belleville. BELLEVILLE - E. Jean Kauffman, 81, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, formerly of Knepp Road, Belleville, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Valley View. Born June 12, 1919, in Granville, she was a daughter of the late Harry E. and Clara (Freed) Zimmerman. Her husband, Ernest R. Kauffman, whom she married Oct. 26, 1935, died Dec. 2, 1995. Surviving are: children, Mrs. David (Beverly) Peachey, Poe Street, Belleville, Mrs. Roy (Roberta) Benn and Kenneth L. Kauffman, both of Belleville, and Ernest R. Kauffman Jr., Roanoke, Va.; a sister and brother, Mrs. Donald (Ruth) Renninger, Lewistown RR4 and Robert Zimmerman, Alexandria; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a twin brother, E. Dean Zimmerman; brothers and sister, Charles Zimmerman, Donald Zimmerman, and Jessie Kauffman; and two grandchildren. She was a homemaker and served on the election board of Menno Township. She was a member of the Maple Grove Mennonite Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Valley View Haven Chapel, Belleville with the Rev. Erie Renno and the Rev. Galen Sharp officiating. Interment will be in the Locust Grove Cemetery. ORBISONIA - Esther Ruth Kauffman, 96, a resident of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, formerly of 22 E. Shirley St., Mount Union, died at 1:04 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Feb. 10, 1904, in Longfellow, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Irene (Youtzy) Kauffman. She is survived by a son, R. Max Kauffman, Mount Union; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by sisters and brother, Nannie Harshbarger, Mabel Henry, Jesse Kauffman; and one grandson. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Radle's farm implement store in Mount Union and later worked at B.W. Reeder's Hardware Store, Mount Union. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Mount Union, where she was a past superintendent of the primary Sunday school. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. David Ford and the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon officiating. Interment will be in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg RR1. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the funeral home. MIFFLINTOWN - Raymond E. Kauffman, 68, of Mifflintown HCR63, died at 12:35 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2000, at his residence. Born Feb. 15, 1932, in McAlisterville, he was the son of the late Boyd and Lydia (Wert) Kauffman. His wife, Wilma F. (Graybill) Kauffman, whom he married Nov. 25, 1951, survives. Also surviving are: children, Harold R. Kauffman and Marlin D. Kauffman, both of Mifflintown, and Mrs. Frank (Barbara J.) Freeman, Bloomingburg, N.Y.; sisters, Anna M. Weaver, Womeldorf, Thelma E. Kauffman, Richfield, and Ferne I. Lehman, Mount Pleasant Mills; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert C. Kauffman and infant brother and sister, Chester and Esther Kauffman. He attended Richfield Elementary School and earned his high school GED in 1988. He was a lifelong self-employed farmer and has been a school bus driver since 1986 for the Swartz, Wilson and Booker Busing Companies. He was a member of the Lost Creek Mennonite Church, Mifflintown RR1, where he served as a deacon for 30 years, a Sunday school superintendent, a Sunday school teacher for many years, and a ministerial advisor to the church youth for 20 years. He served on several committees in the Lancaster Mennonite Conference and was a member of the Farm Bureau and other agricultural organizations. He enjoyed meeting new people and reading. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Lost Creek Mennonite Church, with ministers, Emanuel Martin, Roy Brubaker and Glenn Kauffman officiating. Interment will follow in the church Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today at the church, where family will be present from 6-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Lost Creek Mennonite Church, RR2, Box 1405, Mifflintown, PA 17059. PETERSBURG - Rev. William W. Kauffman, 75, of Petersburg RR1, formerly of Port Royal, died at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at his home. Born Feb. 22, 1925, in Port Royal, he was the son of the late Oliver W. and Barbara Matilda (Walter) Kauffman. He is survived by children, William Alexander Kauffman, Lyons, N.Y., Gayle Ewing, Petersburg RR1. and Nancy Embly, Jacksonville, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. George (Frances) Crimmel, Port Royal; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Edna Metzgar and a half-sister, Catherine Wagner. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Tuscarora Valley High School, Port Royal, and a 1967 graduate of the Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington D.C. He was ordained an elder in 1968 with the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. In his early life, he served as a lay speaker at the Port Royal United Methodist Church. He was a retired Methodist minister, having served in the following parishes: Monroeton; Manor Hill of Petersburg RR; Broad Avenue of Altoona; Mapleton, and Robertsdale. He was a member of the Port Royal United Methodist Church, the Blue Masonic Lodge of Monroeton, and was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Altoona. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Port Royal United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas H. Irwin Jr., District Superintendent of the Altoona district, and Pastor Frank J. Swartz officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the Rex Funeral Home, 308 Market St., Port Royal, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Saturday at the church. OIL CITY - Erna M. Kearns, 93, of 409 Englewood Ave., Oil City, formerly of 825 S. Wayne St., Lewistown, died at 1:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at her residence. Born Sept. 16, 1907, in McClure, she was the daughter of the late Amos E. and Alvilda (Romig) Klinger. Her husband, D. Edgar Kearns, died June 29, 1989. Surviving are: daughters, Doris Stoyer, Oil City and Mrs. Charles (Patricia L.) DeLuca, Merrimack, NH; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family having been preceded in death by one brother and one sister. She was employed as a sales clerk at Danks & Co. in Lewistown for 18 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Gerald A. Krum officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Family will receive friends 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Irving M. Kearns, 83, of 237 Orchard Grove Ave., Lewistown, died at 10:20 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at his residence. Born March 26, 1917, in Milroy, he was a son of the late Jesse A. and Hazel G. (Shank) Kearns. His wife, Vera A. (Moyer) Kearns, preceded him in death Jan. 15, 1998. Surviving are: children, Dennis Kearns, Milroy, and Sharon Gisewhite, Lewistown; step-children, Kenneth Bailey, Middleburg, and Edith Hackett, Yeagertown; brothers and sisters, Margaret Campanella, Brooklyn, N.Y., Lenore Fultz, Pleasant Gap, Mrs. Robert (Zelpha) Stinson, Centre Hall, Mrs. Norman (Ruth) Schreiber, Harrisburg, Phyllis Nordan, Benson, N.C., Mrs. Clifford (Virginia) McLaughlin and Marlin Kearns, both of Lewistown; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, nine step-great-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Allen S. Kearns, a daughter, June Kearns Shenk, a step-daughter, Jeanetta K. Johnstonbaugh, and sisters, Dorene Flores and Faye Krepps. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in Germany. He was a 1936 graduate of Milroy High School. He retired after 41 years of service as a machinist in Machine Shop 1 at Standard Steel, Burnham. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, Company 350, Luray, Va., and was a star baseball player on the camp team. He was a member of Parkview Church of the Brethren. He was also a member of East End Blue Rock Sportsmans Club, Milroy and the Milroy American Legion, and a life-member of City Hook & Ladder, Kreamer Sportsman Association and the National Rifle Association. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Ralph H. Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Troxelville Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HOSPICE: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
