Winifred A. 'Winnie' Knouse Layson
MCALISTERVILLE - Winifred A. "Winnie" Knouse Layson, 86, of McAlisterville, presently residing at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1, died at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born May 28, 1914, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Sellers B. and Edith Mae (Miller) Zong. Her first husband, William P. Knouse, whom she married Dec. 16, 1933, died February 1976. Her second husband, John K. Layson, whom she married Sept. 16, 1978, died May 1995. Surviving are: children, Jon M. "Jack" Knouse, Reedsville and Mrs. William (Sue Ann) Sheaffer, Beavertown; sisters, Mildred Gensheimer, Mauahawkin, NJ, Jean Thummel, Harleysville, and Patricia Zong, Blue Bell; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, William; brothers, Walter Zong and an infant brother; sisters, Esther Neff and Kathryn Rodkey; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. She was employed as a seamstress for L. Shellenberger & Sons and Lyon Fashion, McAlisterville, until her retirement in 1972. She was a member of the Lost Creek Presbyterian Church, McAlisterville; the Presbyterian Women; the McAlisterville Ladies Club; and a charter member of Lady Lafayette Rebekah Lodge 384. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Walter E. Williams and the Rev. Graham C. Fowler officiating. Interment will be in Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, McAlisterville. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Lost Creek Presbyterian Church, PO Box 91, McAlisterville, PA 17049.

Robert W. Leach
BLAIN - Robert W. Leach of Blain, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Carlisle Hospital. Born in Honey Grove, he was the son of the late Styles and Catherine (Henry) Leach. His wife, Dorothy M. (Woods) Leach, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Rege W. Leach, Durango, Colo.; a brother, Paul Leach, Blain; two half-sisters, Tressie Kendrick, Thompsontown and Pauline Davis, Dillsburg; and two grandchildren. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from Conrail, where he had worked as a welder and diesel mechanic. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Blain. He was also a member of VFW Post 7463, New Bloomfield; the American Legion Post 177, Newport; the Adam's Lodge 319 F&AM, New Bloomfield; the Harrisburg Consistory; the Blain Fire Company; and the Blain Ambulance Club. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, with the Rev. Walter L. Hafer Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Blain Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Zion Lutheran Church, Blain, PA 17006.

Samuel J. Leach
MIFFLINTOWN - Samuel J. Leach, 64, of Mifflintown RR3, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at his home. Born July 29, 1936 in Mifflin, he was a son of the late Samuel H. and Myrtle (Woodward) Leach. His wife, Helen A. "Sis" (Renninger) Leach, whom he married May 19, 1957, survives. Also surviving are: children, Brenda S. Stull, Milroy, Staci J. Deamer, Mifflintown RR5 and S. Brent Leach, at home; sisters, Margaret Peck and Mary Martha Gilbert, both of Mifflin; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Cloyd Leach, Harry Leach and Billy Leach. He was a UPS delivery man, having retired in 1996, and previously was the owner and operator of Sam's Gulf in Mifflintown. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 776, and was a past member of NASCAR, having worked with several racing teams. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, football and spending time with his grandchildren. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. James R. Harper officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery. There will be a closed casket visitation 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Locust Grove, HC67, Mifflin, PA 17058.

Fay E. Leeper
LEWISTOWN - Fay E. Leeper, 70, of 1257 Vira Road, Lewistown, died at 12:50 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at her home. Born April 5, 1930, in Burnham, she was the daughter of Stella (Betlyon) Billett of 427 Freedom Ave., Burnham and the late Harry Billett. Her husband, Gary M. Leeper, whom she married Dec. 16, 1951, survives. Also surviving are: children, Anthony G. Leeper, 378 Whiskey Road, McClure and Lu Ann L. Leeper, 325 West High Street, Middletown; sisters, Nancy Billett, California and Joann White, Freedom Avenue, Burnham; and one granddaughter. She was an office clerk for Glicks Shoe Store, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Freedom Avenue United Methodist Church, Burnham, where she was an organist for 35 years and a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Vira Methodist Cemetery. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044. Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Leidy
MILROY - Robert G. Leidy, 72, of 155 N. Main St., Milroy, died at 9:58 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Feb. 16, 1928, in South Saltillo, he was the son of the late Frank S. and Myrtle P. (Park) Leidy. He is survived by a companion, Dorothy Strange of Milroy. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Jeff (Cindy) Buch, New Lancaster Valley, Milroy; a sister, Mrs. George (Thelma L.) Henry, Lewistown; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy S. Leidy. He served in the United States Navy. He was a self-employed carpenter, retiring on disability in 1975. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Salem Cemetery, Milroy, with Marshall Deckard officiating. There will be no public viewing. Family will provide all flowers, but memorial contributions may be made to the family: c/o Melodie Wray, 88 Snook Road, McClure, PA 17841. The Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Anna Belle Leister
LANCASTER - Anna Belle Leister, 88, of 1977 Pine Drive, Lancaster, formerly of Manheim, died at 6:02 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2000 at Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster, after a long illness. Born in Blairs Mills, she was a daughter of the late David McGinnis and Blanche Ellen Vaughn Jeffries. Her husband, William P. Leister, preceded her in death Aug. 8, 1984. Surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Lloyd E. (Evelyn M.) Weidman, Lancaster, Kathryn G. Killian, Manheim, Mrs. Jerry (Gladys A.) Latimer, LaPlata, Md., and Mrs. Fred (Marilyn J.) Witmer, Leola; brothers and sisters, Lester Jeffries and Dale Jeffries, both of Lancaster, Jay Jeffries, Clearfield County, Maggie May, Manheim, and Beulah Kling, Shade Gap; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ann Leister. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Church, Lancaster. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Buch Funeral Home Inc., 21 Market Square, Manheim. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster. The family will provide all flowers. Friend may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses Association, 354 N. Eugene A. Leister
LEWISTOWN - Eugene A. Leister, 88, of 708 E. Walnut St., Lewistown, died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Oct. 23, 1912, in Burnham, he was the son of the late Lloyd Charles and Hattie Eva (Henry) Leister. His wife, Melda (Wagner) Leister, whom he married Nov. 18, 1933, survives. Also surviving are: brothers and sisters, Verna Laub, Paintersville; Florence Goss, State College; Sylvia Harper, 406 Princeton St., Lewistown; Frances Amspacker, Topton, Brice H. Leister Sr., 1210 Rt. 522 N., Lewistown; and Clifford Leister, East Petersburg. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a self-employed used car dealer, retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lewistown and the Ich Dein Sunday School Class. He was also a life member of the Owls Club and a member of the United Commercial Travelers Council 591. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Gerald A. Krum officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Ich Dein Sunday School Class, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044.

Judith Pannebaker Leister
MIFFLINTOWN - Judith Pannebaker Leister, 61, of Front Street, Mifflintown, died at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2000, at her home. Born Aug. 6, 1938, in Mifflintown, she was a daughter of the late William and Florence (Walters) Pannebaker. Her husband, Glenn M. Leister, whom she married May 14, 1959, survives. Also surviving are: children, William G. Leister, Mifflintown, Douglas M. Leister, Dallastown, and Patricia A. Leister, Walnut; sisters, Linda K. McNaight, Mifflintown and Karen P. Garver, Mifflintown RR1; and four grandchildren. She was a 1956 graduate of Juniata Joint High School. She had been employed by Pennsylvania Power and Light Company; as a cashier at Quality Cash and the Mifflintown IGA; and was co-owner of Leister's Superette, Mifflin. She was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown, the Crawford-Brubaker Post 5863, and the VFW ladies auxiliary. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Douglas Compton officiating. Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Aldersgate United Methodist Church Music Fund, 109 N. Third St., Mifflintown, PA 17059.
