MCCLURE - Robert J. Phillips, 68, of McClure RR2, died at 6:05 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Geisinger Medical Center after an extended illness. Born Feb. 16, 1932, in Milroy, he was a son of the late John D. and Catherine B. (Fultz) Phillips. His wife, Pearl P. (Snook) Phillips, whom he married Aug. 23, 1958, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs. Harold E. (Kim E.) Jefferys and Robert J. Phillips Jr., both of McClure, Jaylene K. Fultz, McClure RR2; a nephew, whom he and his wife raised, Shane D. Mallery, Beaver Springs RR1; five sisters, Irene Kreydatus, Lewistown, Barbara Reed, Nagney, Jean Ruble, Milroy, Shirley Keeney, Reedsville and Bertha Balmer, Myerstown; two brothers, John Phillips, Reedsville and Gary Phillips, Petersburg; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers, Thelma Damicantonio, Mary Gray, Richard Phillips and Frank Phillips; and a sister and brother in infancy. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He received his basic training with the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Dix, NJ. He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation after 17 years on the road crew. He was a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church, New Lancaster Valley, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for 17 years. He enjoyed Bible reading, singing, fishing, hunting, and woodworking. Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with the Rev. William Herrick and the Rev. Ken Gordon officiating. Interment will be in the Black Oak Ridge Cemetery, McClure RR2, where graveside military services will be provided by American Legion Post 942, McClure. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends 7-9 p.m.
LEWISTOWN - Marjorie P. Pierce, 76, of 333 S. Wayne St., Lewistown, died at 10:58 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000 at Lewistown Hospital. Born Sept. 14, 1924 in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Mabel (Aurand) and Charles Price. Her husband Woodrow Pierce preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1956. Surviving are: children, C. Michael Pierce, 333 S. Wayne St., Lewistown and Gregory T. Pierce, 101 Elbow Lane, Fort Washington; and three grandchildren. She was a 1942 graduate of Derry Township High School, and a 1946 graduate of Germantown Dispensary and Hospital. She worked as a Registered Nurse in New York, Michigan, Florida and Pennsylvania. She retired in 1990 from the Geisinger Medical Group, Lewistown, where she worked since 1983, and previously had been employed from 1973 to 1983 at the LGC Clinic. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a past president of the board of the American Cancer Society, Lewistown. She funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hoenstine Funeral Home, Inc. 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 p.m. Thursday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
REEDSVILLE - Gladys T. Porpotage, 74, of 82 W. Railroad St., Reedsville, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at her home. Born June 8, 1926, in Royer, she was a daughter of the late Mike I. and Anna (Brokup) Porpotage. Surviving are: sisters, Mary Goodman, Reedsville and Dora Porpotage, Pensacola, FL. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. She was retired and, in her earlier years, had worked at the Lewistown Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 106 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, with Father Thomas B. Marickovic officiating. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery, Reedsville. Friends will be received 7-9 p.m Sunday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, where a prayer service will be conducted at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 112 N. Wayne St., Lewistown, HOSPICE: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown or the charity of one's choice.
BURNHAM - Nicholas O. Powell, 23, of South Logan Boulevard, Burnham, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at his home. Born May 16, 1977, in Lewistown, he was the son of Gary "Sing" Powell of 4300 Old Pete's Road, McClure and Laura J. Frankhouser of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Also surviving are: three half-brothers, Alex S. Powell and Reid A. Powell, both of McClure and Gabriel Specht of Reedsville; paternal grandparents, Harold G. and Mitsue Powell, Burnham; and maternal grandparents, Maurice and Marlene Frankhouser, Reedsville. He was a 1995 graduate of Indian Valley High School and a graduate of the Computer Learning Network, Camp Hill. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was employed as a computer programmer for Xerox Corporation, Harrisburg. He was a member of the Hickory Springs Hunting Camp, Licking Creek. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing chess and computer programming. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 South Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Scott T. Reiman officiating. Interment will be in Birch Hill Cemetery, Burnham. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Indian Valley High School Computer Lab, Attention: William Hardison, 700 Cedar St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
MCALISTERVILLE - Benjamin M. "Ben" Price, 78, of McAlisterville RR2, died at 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at his residence, following a lengthy illness. Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Granville, he was the son of the late William Ira and Jesse May (Van Scyoc) Price. His wife, Ruby (Hepner) Price, whom he married Aug. 18, 1939, survives. Also surviving are: sons, Carl Price and Darvin Price, both of McAlisterville, and William "Bill" Price, Thompsontown; brothers and sisters, William Price, Mifflintown, Fred Gilbert, Cleveland, Ohio, Lois Hubler, Port Royal and Betty Basom, Thompsontown; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He attended McAlisterville Elementary School. He served in the U.S. Navy SeaBees, from 1944-1946. He retired in 1978, after 16 years as a heavy equipment operator for Hempt Brothers Construction, Camp Hill. He had previously been employed by D.E. Smith Construction and Quigley Construction, both of Mifflintown. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, McAlisterville RR2. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin in Potter County. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's United Methodist Church, McAlisterville RR2, with the Rev. Ronald E. Landis officiating. Interment will follow in Lind Memorial Cemetery, Lewistown, where full military honors will be conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Association. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, where the family will be present to receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice: The Bridge, 1126 West Fourth Street, Lewistown, PA 17044.
MIFFLINTOWN - William I. "Bill" Price, Jr., 74, of Berry's Personal Care Center, Inc., Mifflintown RR1, formerly of Mifflintown, died at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born March 20, 1926, in Granville, Mifflin County, he was a son of the late William I. and Jesse May (Van Scyoc) Price, Sr. His first wife Catherine M. (Harris) Price preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 1974 and his second wife Mabel L. (Williamson) Reichenbach Price preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1999. Surviving are: children, Nancy K. McFarland, Mifflintown RR3, Cathy M. Husler, Mifflintown RR1 and Shirley A. Husler, Mifflin HC-67; brothers and sisters, Fred Gilbert, Cleveland, Ohio, Lois Hubler, Port Royal and Betty Basom, Thompsontown; 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin M. "Ben" Price on July 25, 2000. He had attended the McAlisterville Elementary School. He was a Lutheran by faith, having attended both St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Nook, and Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He retired in 1988 from the melt shop of Standard Steel, Burnham. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge Street, Mifflintown, with Linda J. Fultz officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Nook. Friends may call from 7 p.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 26 North Brown Street, Lewistown, PA 17044.
LEWISTOWN - Charles Donald Pringle, 77, of 511 Yale St., Lewistown, died at 3:23 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at his residence. Born Dec. 22, 1922, in Burnham, he was a son of the late Charles Frederick and Elsie (Berryman) Pringle. His wife, Mary J. (Harker) Pringle, whom he married May 17, 1945, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Gloria K. Pringle, Los Angeles, Calif. and Gwynne C. Pringle, Harrisburg; sister and brother, Mabel Havice, Hanover and Leroy F. Pringle, York. He was a 1941 graduate of Lewistown High School. He was a United States Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a self-employed salesman and early in life, he worked at Standard Steel, Burnham. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown, the Blue Juniata Beagle Club, and a life member of the BPOE Lodge 663. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Lewistown, with Karen McCachren officiating. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Third St., Lewistown, PA 17044 or to Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Central Pennsylvania Chapter, 800 Corporate Circle, Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. LEWISTOWN - Emma Jane Pursel, 82, of 350 Logan St., Lewistown, died at 2:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at her residence. Born May 14, 1918, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Mary E. (Jarrett) Contner. Her husband, Robert C. "Red" Pursel, died Dec. 1, 1955. Surviving are: children, Robert W. Pursel, Hillside Drive, Lewistown, Richard C. Pursel, Lancaster, and Mrs. Jonathan (Mary Jane) Welch, Riverside, Calif.; a sister, Mary E. Groninger, Brookline Manor, Mifflintown; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was a 1936 graduate of Lewistown High School. She worked as a secretary for Derry elementary schools and later as a secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, the Fort Granville Grange No. 1902, the Towpath Naturalists and the Mifflin County Historical Society. She had also been active with the Stone Arch Players. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 20 Oak St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Dean M. Bobb officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Church of Christ, 20 Oak St., Lewistown, PA 17044, or to the American Cancer Society, 26 N. Brown St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
