LEWISTOWN - Jay R. Rhodes, 83, of SR103 North, Lewistown (Longfellow), died at 10:09 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born July 11, 1917, in Mifflin County, he was the son of the late Mack M. and Eva G. (Woodward) Rhodes. His wife, Dorothy F. (Renninger) Rhodes, whom he married Feb. 5, 1942, resides at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin. Also surviving are: children, William J. Rhodes, Randy L. Rhodes, Karen K. Rhodes, Johnny L. Rhodes, Ricky L. Rhodes, all of Lewistown, Darlene M. Yoder, Mrs. David (JoAnn) Plank, both of Granville, James R. Rhodes, Mrs. Paul (Grace) Markley, both of McVeytown, and Robert M. Rhodes, Malta Home, Granville; brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Winn, Clair W. Rhodes, Mrs. John (Mildred) Anderson, all of Lewistown, Mrs. Blain (Dorothy) Workinger, Mary Forshey, both of Burnham, Mrs. George (Grace) Pressler, Hollidaysburg, Alma Shaack, Elizabethtown, Pearl Robinson, Reidsville, N.C., Earlene Miles, Curwensville, and Wilbur Rhodes, Evandale; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, two grandsons, and one great-grandson. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater. He retired as a machine operator for Conrail in July of 1980 with 43 years of service. He was a member of the McVeytown Fire Company and the Granville Fire Company. He enjoyed collecting train and John Deere memorabilia. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Pine Glen Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Donald E. Peters Jr. and the Rev. Charles Rhodes officiating. Interment will be in the Pine Glen Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the services today at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Malta Home, PO Box E, Granville, PA 17029. Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, is in charge of arrangements.
RICHFIELD - Ferne Elizabeth "Granny" Rhoads, 78, of Richfield RR1, died at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Born April 4, 1922, in Richfield, she was the daughter of the late Roy Z. and Katie (Gearhart) Lauver Hendricks. She is survived by children, Richard E. Rhoads, Mifflintown RR2, R. Edwin 'Ed" Rhoads, Liverpool RR2, Clair A. Rhoads, Mount Pleasant Mills, Stephen D. Rhoads, Sunbury, and Mrs. Gary E. ( Ann L.) Graybill, Richfield RR1; sisters, Ethel Renninger, Richfield and Irene Polner, Levittown; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sisters, Luella Leister and Evelyn Whitmer; a granddaughter, Linda Sue Rhoads, at birth; a great-grandson, Jeremiah Goss, at birth; and a great-granddaughter, Hope Rhoads. She was educated at the Crossroads Grammar Schoolhouse, rural Richfield. She was employed as a presser by the Juniata Garment Company in Mount Pleasant Mills, Mifflin and Middleburg; and by Leonard's Garment Factory, Mount Pleasant Mills. She was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Mount Pleasant Mills and assisted the Bible Study Group in making sleeping bags for the homeless. She was also a member of the Richfield Fire Company and the Richfield Ambulance League. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, playing piano, hummingbirds and taking trips. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Mount Pleasant Mills, with the Pastor James E. Lewis officiating. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the George P. Garman Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Mills. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Muscular Degeneration Foundation, PO Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515.
MIFFLINTOWN - Joseph B. Richardson, 75, of Mifflintown RR4 (Manbeck Heights), died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. Born May 30, 1925, in Derry Township, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Mabel J. (Carruthers) Richardson. His wife, Marjorie A. "Marty" (Coder) Richardson, whom he married Nov. 22, 1947, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Jeffrey L. Richardson, Mifflintown RR4; a daughter, Mrs. David (Valerie J.) Stutts, Mifflintown RR1; and four grandchildren. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by four brothers, William Richardson, John Richardson, Raymond Richardson, Willis Richardson, and three sisters, Mary Hoffman, Edna White, and Vera Troutman. He was a 1944 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He retired in 1990 with 33 years of service as a lathe operator from Machine Shop No. 2 of Standard Steel, Burnham. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin and its No. 10 Sunday School Class. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. James Harper officiating. Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, where full military burial honors will be provided by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: Trinity United Methodist Church, PO Box F, Mifflin, PA 17058.
LEWISTOWN - Lynda Spring Rickert, 48, of 25 Oak St., Lewistown, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at her residence of natural causes. Born April 3, 1952, in Litchfield, Conn., she was a daughter of Walter Spring of Belleville and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Wescott of Torrington, Conn. Her husband, William Rickert, whom she married Oct. 12, 1997, survives. Also surviving are: sons, Thomas P. Stauckas, California, and Michael J. Stauckas, New York; stepmother, Barbara Spring, Belleville; stepfather, Rollin Wescott, Torrington, Conn.; stepchildren, Craig A. Rickert, McVeytown, and Jennifer R. Rickert, Colorado; brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Deborah) Stanizzi, Mrs. Charles (Valerie) Peacock, Mrs. Jeffery (Wendy) Martorelli, John Spring, Neal Wescott and William Spring, all of Connecticut. She was a graduate of St. Raphael School of Nursing, New Haven, Conn. She had worked at St. Raphael Hospital, New Haven, Conn., and was a drug and alcohol counselor in Mifflin County. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and was a hospital visitor for the church and a prayer partner. Services were held at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Dale Hippensteel officiating. Interment was in East Morris Cemetery, Connecticut. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation, Connecticut Chapter, Room 111, 45 S. Main St., W. Hartford, CT 06107-2402.
ORBISONIA - Georgia R. Rinker, 78, of Orbisonia, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, where she had been a resident for the past two months. Born Jan. 1, 1922, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late James McKinley and Esther (Barger) App. Her husband, Max E. Rinker, whom she married July 22, 1941 in Winchester, Va., died June 22, 1982. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Larry (Brenda) Clark, Rockhill Furnace and Terry L. "Skip" Rinker, Orbisonia; a sister, Peggy Potts, Orbisonia; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson. She retired as a secretary from Southern Huntingdon School District in 1988 after 15 years of service. She was a member of the Rockhill Church of the Brethren. Private memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Pastor David Ort officiating. Interment will be in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery, Rockhill Furnace. There will be no public viewing or visitation. The family requests no flowers. HONEY GROVE - Lorraine W. Rits, 61, of Honey Grove RR1, died at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at her home. Born Sept. 12, 1938, in Montella, Berks County, she was the daughter of Lester and Hilda Weller of Sinking Spring. Her husband, Edgar H. Rits, whom she married Sept. 8, 1956, survives. Also surviving are: sons, Edgar "Butch" Rits Jr., Northglenn, Colo. and Michael P. Rits, Washington, D.C.; a sister, Diane Gulden, West Lawn; and eight grandchildren. She was a cook and waitress at several area restaurants. Most recently, she worked at Locust Grove Retirement Village as a dietary aide. She attended New Life Assembly of God Church, Mifflintown and taught Sunday School and worked with Child Evangelism Good News Clubs for many years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning vegetables, and singing gospel music. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at East Waterford Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rits farm. The Rev. Jack Twombly will officiate. There will be no public viewing. The family will provide all funeral flowers and memorial contributions may be made to: New Life Assembly of God Memorial Fund, RR4, Box 417, Mifflintown, PA 17059. The Guss Funeral Home, 30 South Third St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.
RICHFIELD - Charlotte M. Ritter, 68, of HCR 73, Richfield, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at her residence. Born Dec. 9, 1931, in Perry Township, Snyder County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Ida (Gelnett) Benner. Surviving are: children, Bruce R. Ritter, Raleigh, N.C., Mrs. Thomas (Connie L.) Sperling, Glenwood, Iowa and Mrs. Anthony (Brenda K.) Pellman, Mifflintown RR2; brothers and sisters: Herbert Benner, Leymoyne, Warren Benner, Harold Benner, and Orpha Lyter, all of Richfield, Maynard "Jake" Benner, Dauphin, Reno Benner, Lewisburg, Arlene Sierer, Mount Pleasant Mills and Naomi Goodling, Mechanicsburg; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Scott Ritter and two brothers, Leonard Benner and Nevin Benner. She was a graduate of Freeburg High School. She was a member of the Richfield Mennonite Church. She enjoyed reading Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Richfield Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Jerry R. O'Connell officiating. Interment will be in the Richfield Union Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Richfield Mennonite Church, Richfield, PA 17086. The George P. HUNTINGDON - John H. Ritter Sr., 75, of Huntingdon RR2, died at 6:06 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Hershey Medical Center. Born Sept. 30, 1924, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late George Ritter. He is survived by children, Ricci L. Ritter, Huntingdon, John H. Ritter Jr., Lewistown, and Mrs. Tommy (Tereca) Grose, Granville; sister and brother, Dora L. Sheller, Westminster, Md. and John D. Harshberger, Point Bay, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was an oil field employee for R.H. Kelly Inc., Wyoming. He was a member of Grace Covenant Church, Lewistown. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
