ALLENSVILLE - William H. Rutherford, 81, of 50 Huey St., Allensville, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Meadowview Manor, McVeytown RR1. Born May 26, 1919, in Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Herbert and Gertrude (Kimmel) Rutherford. His wife, Thelma M. (Adams) Rutherford, whom he married March 25, 1946, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Anna Marie) Yoder, Allensville, Mrs. Lloyd (Mary) Grubb, Huntingdon RR1 and Mrs. Thomas (Karen) Kauffman, Huntingdon RR3; sisters, Mrs. Monroe (Marian) White and Beatrice Harbaugh, both of HCR 61, Mill Creek, and Dorothy Moneta, Belle Vernon; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Faith Rutherford on June 17, 1996; a son, Richard Allen Rutherford on May 30, 1948; a granddaughter, Lesley Yoder; and three sisters, Margaret Bailey, Regina Imler, and Irene Bowser. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a dairy farmer in Trough Creek Valley, retiring in 1965. He then worked at Fairmont Products, Belleville, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Allensville Presbyterian Church, a life member of the Huntingdon VFW, and a member of the Trough Creek Valley Grange. He was an avid woodworker and an accomplished musician and played for square dances. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Allensville Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Geoffrey Huish officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Mill Creek. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville. MCALISTERVILLE - Zanah M. Ryan, 75, of McAlisterville, formerly of Waterford, died at 6:18 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000 at Lewistown Hospital. Born Feb. 5, 1925 in Stoneboro, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Florynce Marsteller. Her husband LaRue M. Ryan, whom she married May 20, 1945, preceded her in death on June 6, 1993. Surviving are: children, Ruth M. Showalter, Charles Ryan and Rodney Ryan, all of McAlisterville, and Robert Ryan, Lewisburg; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of East Fallowfield High School, Atlantic. She was a member of the Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, McAlisterville RR1, and she volunteered to help the elderly at the church. She enjoyed painting, crocheting, knitting and writing, and she was the author of a column run in the Union City Times. She worked as an administrative assistant for the Army Corp. of Engineers, and in 1972 and 1973 worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. She had also been employed as a Nurses Aid at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1, as well as working as a private duty caregiver. Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with the Rev. Forrest Gordon officiating. Interment will be in the Lost Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, McAlisterville. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2040 Linglestown Road, Suite 106, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
PALMYRA - John A. Ryner, 69, of South Green Street, Palmyra, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Hershey Medical Center. Born July 21, 1931, in Mifflintown, he was the son of the late Harry O. and Verna M. (Pannabaker) Ryner. His wife of 22 years, Zellamae (Hovermale) Ryner, survives. Also surviving are: children, Larry Bivens, Falling Waters, WV, Barry Bivens, Palmyra, and Sherry Simmons, Mercersburg; a sister Ona Jean Zook; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother. He was a 1949 graduate of Juniata High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was retired with 30 years of service from Bell Telephone Company. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lebanon and had served a mission in Family History in Salt Lake City City, Utah, with the church. He was also a member of the Mifflintown American Legion; the Mifflintown Masonic Lodge F&AM; the East Hanover Township Lions Club; the Telephone Pioneers; and the Bell Telephone Square Club, Harrisburg. He enjoyed cats and hunting. Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 455 Church Road, Lebanon. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, where military honors will be given by the Mifflintown American Legion. Friends may call 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. The Buse Funeral Home, 145 N. Grant St., Palmyra, is in charge of arrangements.
MILESBURG - William J. Sager, 70, of Milesburg, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Centre Crest. Born June 10, 1929, in Bellefonte, he was a son of the late William J. and Mary (Jury) Sager. His wife, B. Faye (Reese) Sager, preceded him in death on July 12, 1994. Surviving are: children, Kathy M. Sager-Reese, Julian, Alice F. Fisher, Milesburg and William C. Sager, Lewistown; sisters, Gertrude Lucas, Anna Mary Taylor and Alberta Watson, all of Julian, Dorothy King, Bellefonte and Peggy Beigtol, Pleasant Gap; brothers, Donald Sager of Bellefonte and Charles Sager, Julian; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mae Louise Sager. He was a veteran of the United States Army and the United States Navy. He worked at Cerro Copper and Brass of Bellefonte, and also worked at Scientific Systems of State College. He attended Bald Eagle Valley Community Church, Bellefonte. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg, with the Rev. Thomas M. Osif officiating. Interment will be in Advent Cemetery, Boggs Township, Centre County. Friends may 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. COLUMBIA - Mae E. Saylor, 81, of St. Anne's Home, Columbia, formerly of HC 67, Mifflin, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at the home. Born Nov. 15, 1919, in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Shirk) Frey. Her husband, Arden D. Saylor, died May 6, 1984. She is survived by three daughters, Carole D. Royer, Middletown, Ardis Ann Bender, North Augusta, SC, and Maria E. Saylor, Millersville; and two grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by one brother, Charles Frey. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St, Mifflintown, with the Rev. James Harper officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
PORT ROYAL - Stephen R. Saylor, 46, of Port Royal RR2, died of natural causes at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at his home. Born June 20, 1954, in Derry Township, Mifflin County, he was the son of Richard C. and Connie D. (Dolin) Saylor of Mifflintown RR1. His wife, Kathy J. (Crawford) Saylor, survives. Also surviving are a son, Evan R. Saylor, at home, and a sister, Lou Ann Saylor-Pilsits, Enola. He was a 1972 graduate of Juniata High School, Mifflintown, and a 1974 graduate of Williamsport Area Community College. He was employed by KSM Enterprises, Mifflintown. He was a member of Grace Covenant Church, Lewistown. He enjoyed bowling, and he was an avid race fan. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Brethren in Christ Church, Mifflintown RR4, with Pastor Michael Bailey officiating. Interment will be in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal RR2. There will be no viewing, but family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: Grace Covenant Church, 205 Washington Ave., Lewistown, PA 17044 or to HOSPICE: The Bridge, 1126 W. Fourth St., Lewistown, PA 17044. CARLISLE - Bessie M. Casner Schell, 86, of Carlisle, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle. Born Feb. 11, 1914, in Port Royal RR1, she was the daughter of the late Lewis E. and Tessie T. (Bryner) Casner. Her husband, Roy E. Schell, preceded her in death. Surviving are: sister and brother, Beulah Swartz, Carlisle and H. Lee Casner, Loysville RR1; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kathy Schell. She was employed at Kinney Shoe Company, Carlisle and at the Blain Dress Factory. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Carlisle. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at the Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, with the Rev. Eric J. Shafer officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Alzheimer's Association, 2001 N. MIFFLIN - Beulah M. Schell, 94, of Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin HC 67, formerly of Mifflintown RR1, died at 9:25 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at the village. Born Aug. 6, 1906, in Oakland Mills, she was the daughter of the late John and Minnie (Shellenberger) Shirk. Her husband, Homer D. Schell, died Aug. 18, 1981. Surviving are: children, Clarence E. Schell, Mifflintown RR1, Charles A. Schell, McAlisterville RR1, S. Arlene Wagner, San Francisco, Calif. and Sandra L. Deen, Port Royal RR1; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard E. Schell and two brothers, Harry Shirk and Ira Shirk. She graduated from Fayette High School and attended Elizabethtown College. She was a homemaker and taught school briefly after attending college. She was also former secretary/treasurer for the Juniata Association for the Blind. She was a member of the Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Mifflintown RR1 and the WCTU and was a former gray lady. She enjoyed music and reading and played a variety of instruments. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with the Rev. Karl R. Herman officiating. Interment will be in Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Mifflintown RR2. There will be no public viewing, but family will be present to receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Juniata Association for the Blind, 658 Valley St., Lewistown, PA 17044.
