GRANVILLE - Betty M. Steele, 79, of the Malta Home, Granville, formerly of 17 Spring St., Lewistown, died at 11:40 p.m. Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Malta Home. Born April 26, 1921 in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Rev. James and Sara (Burlew) Steele. Surviving is a foster sister, Emma Kemmerer, McAlisterville. She worked for Sylvania Electric and for Child Evangelism Fellowship of Juniata-Mifflin-Perry Counties, and as a crossing guard for the Mifflin County School District. She played piano for, and was a member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Milroy. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Ray Orme officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Juniata-Mifflin-Perry Counties, Manbeck Heights, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
MIFFLINTOWN - Alton Root Steward, 87, of Mifflintown RR3, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at his home. Born Nov. 12, 1912, in Altoona, he was a son of the late David G. and Mary Elizabeth (Root) Steward. His first wife, Alice R. (Kille) Steward, died Aug. 12, 1983, and his second wife, Joyce (Whitesel) Steward, whom he married June 24, 1989, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Gloria A. Cast, Spring, Texas, Sandra S. Tame, Sewell, N.J., Janet C. Jagers, Clarksboro, N.J.; stepchildren, Cathy Leach, Mifflintown RR3, and Kevin Jury, Centre Hall; a sister, L. Naomi Steward, HC 67, Mifflin; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers and sister, James C. Steward, Earl L. Steward, David K. Steward and Mary Kathryn Maltman. He was a graduate of Alexandria High School. He attended Juniata College, Huntingdon and received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business. He was an accountant at E. I. Dupont, Wilmington, Del., retiring with 35 years of service in 1975. He was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR3, where he had served on the church council and was the former choir director. He was also a member of the Union Lodge 324 F&AM, Mifflintown; the Juniata Valley Tall Cedars of Lebanon; the Perry-Juniata Shrine Club; the Milford Grange 773; the Mifflintown Rotary; and a former board member of the Mifflin-Juniata United Way. He had served as the president and secretary-treasurer of the Rev. Paul W. Delauter Youth Center, Mifflintown; served on the board of directors as the treasurer of the Juniata County Library; and also served as the president of the Logan Township School Board, New Jersey. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR3, with the Rev. Louise Knotts officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephens Cemetery, Mifflintown RR3. WALDOBORO, Maine - Cora Evaline Steward, 98, of Fieldcrest Nursing Home, Waldoboro, Maine and formerly of Mifflin, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at the nursing home. Born Nov. 2, 1901, in Shamokin, Northumberland County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Lily Ann (Kehler) Warmkessel. Her husband, James Carl Steward Sr., whom she married Sept. 25, 1922, preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1994. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Arlene S.) Orcutt, Waldoboro, Maine; one son, James C. Steward Jr., Summerfield, Fla.; one brother, Robert Warmkessel, Surfside Beach, SC; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Raker and Maude Hartman, two brothers, Albert Warmkessel and Ben Warmkessel, and a grandson, Jeffrey A. Orcutt. She was a fine seamstress and had mastered the art of crocheting and knitting. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown and the Evangelical Lutheran Church Women of America. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. There will be no viewing. The family will provide all funeral flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.
BURNHAM - Helene M. Stewart, 68, of Freedom Avenue Trailer Court, Lot B23, Burnham, died at 12:50 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at her residence. Born April 28, 1932, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Charles G. and Arlene (Weaver) Smith. Her husband, Kenneth W. Stewart, whom she married April 25, 1964, survives. Also surviving are: children, Robert N. Lynch Jr., McAlevy's Fort, Michael E. Lynch and Scott A. Lynch, both of Lewistown, Tawny D. Kilmer, Mifflin, Brett A. Lynch and Kevin W. Stewart, both of Mifflintown; a sister, Mrs. James (Rosetta) Pannebaker, Lewistown; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother. She was a homemaker. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Ronald J. Lynch officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. There will be no viewing, but friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Thursday at the funeral home. MCVEYTOWN - Robert S. Stewart, 68, of 254 Sechrist Road, McVeytown, died at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital, following an extended illness. Born Aug. 31, 1931, in Oliver Township, Mifflin County, he was the son of the late James C. and Josephine (Dunmire) Stewart Sr. Surviving are: children, Lisa R. Stewart, York, Tina M. Runk, Steven M. Stewart and Stanley E. Stewart, all of Mount Union; sisters, Kay Peterson, Lewistown and Sara Jane Rebuck, Boalsburg; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters; James C. Stewart Jr., Margaret Yoder, Grace Yeakley, Lois Moist and Philip Stewart. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He attended the Rothrock schools. He worked as a crane operator at the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corporation, now US Silica, Mapleton, from Oct. 31, 1954, until his retirement on March 1, 1985. He was Presbyterian by faith. He was an avid race car fan. He was a member and past commander of both the American Legion Post 107, Mount Union and VFW Post 5754, Mount Union. He was also a member of the Order of Sons of Italy, Mount Union; the Loyal Order of Moose, Huntingdon; the Elks Lodge 976, Huntingdon; the American Legion Post 322, Mapleton; and the American Legion Post of Orbisonia-Rockhill. He was a charter member of Atkinson Mills Sportsmens Club, and a past president and member of the Mount Union Lions Club. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Franklin Moist officiating. Interment will be in Mattawanna Cemetery, McVeytown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the time of the services Friday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Nancy D. Stidfole, 52, of 134 Millers Tomb Road, Lewistown, died at 12:28 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2000, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1948, in Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Bernice M. (Shaw) Black. Her husband, Donald P. "Skip" Stidfole, whom she married Oct. 9, 1967, survives. Also surviving are: children, Tammy J. (Stidfole) Copenhaver, 97 Copes Lane, McClure and Shawn C. Stidfole, at home; and two grandchildren. She graduated Empire Beauty School. She was a cashier at Giant Food Store. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lewistown. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with Karen McCachren officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. LEWISTOWN - Vera Chamberlain Deavor Stine, 91, a resident of Beverly Healthcare William Penn, 163 Summit Drive, Lewistown, formerly of 1245 Glenwood Ave., Lewistown, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare William Penn. Born April 4, 1909, in Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Jesse Chamberlain. Her first husband, Oscar L. Deavor, preceded her in death in 1977; her second husband, Leroy Stine, preceded her in death in 1986. Surviving are: children, Dorothy A. Dunmire, Lewistown, and Mrs. Merle (Louise P.) Wilson, Phoenix, AZ; ten grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and two step-sisters of Everett, Bedford County. She was preceded in death by a son, William Howard Deavor, and also by an infant daughter. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters. She had been employed by the American Viscose Corp. for 35 years, before working as a cook at Angelo's, where she retired in 1982. She was a member of the Calvary Bible Church, Lewistown, and a former member of the First Church of the Brethren, Lewistown. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Sherlock officiating. Interment will be in Hustontown Methodist Cemetery, Hustontown. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. The family will provide all funeral flowers; in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
MIFFLINTOWN - Francis J. St. John Sr., 81, of Mifflintown RR3 (Rockville), died at 6:32 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. He was born May 2, 1919 in Wilkes Barre. His wife, Betty M. (Wilt) St. John, died Sept. 2, 1995. Surviving are: children, Francis J. St. John Jr., Port Royal RR1, Thomas V. St. John, Lewistown, Michael A. St. John, Port Royal, Kathryn L. Leahy, Port Royal RR2, Jewel I. St. John, Cocolamus, and Pauline E. Smouse, Mifflintown; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick St. John and a sister, Eleanor Kahley. He retired as a crane operator at Standard Steel, Burnham, with 31 years of service. He was a member of Assemblies of Yahweh, Bethel. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Union Cemetery, Mifflintown RR4, with the Elder Jacob Meyers officiating. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
