LEWISTOWN - Larry L. Swartzell, 59, of E-3 Lawler Place, Lewistown, died at 3:13 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at Hershey Medical Center. Born Aug. 2, 1940, in Milroy, he was the son of Catherine (Carter) Gahagan of E-7 Lawler Place, Lewistown. His wife, Jackie (Moyle) Swartzell of E-3 Lawler Place, Lewistown, whom he married May 8, 1981, survives. Also surviving are: step-brother and step-sisters, James S. Gahagan, Burnham, Mrs. John (Kathleen) Frankhouser, Barrville and Mary A. Colyer, Lewistown. He was preceded in death by his step-father, James P. Gahagan. He was employed at Skills Inc., Lewistown, for several years. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Lewistown. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Roger R. Reece officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Friday at the funeral home.
DRESHER - John B. Sweeney, 68, of North Wales, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Dresher Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dresher. Born May 18, 1932, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Jack Sweeney and Helen Oswald. He is survived by a companion, Jo-Ann Pierie. Also surviving are: children, Mark R. Sweeney and Cynthia H. Malone, both of Lewistown, and Christopher E. Sweeney, Indianapolis, Ind.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He graduated from Temple University and Widener University with a Master's Degree in Education and Reading. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and held the rank of Corporal. He was formerly employed as supervisor of Adult Education and GED with the Philadelphia School District until his retirement in 1997. He also worked with special children. He enjoyed ballroom dancing. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Emil J. Ciavarelli Family Funeral Home, 951 E. Butler Pike, Ambler. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, 527 W. Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA 18914.
HUNTINGDON - William E. Swigart Jr., 85, of 2101 Ellis Ave., Huntingdon, died at 7:23 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2000, at JC Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Feb. 2, 1915, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late W. Emmert and Eva (Workman) Swigart. His first wife, Helen (Fetterhoof) Swigart, whom he married in 1940, preceded him in death May 11, 1991. His second wife, Patricia (Bittner) Trefz Swigart, whom he married Oct. 18, 1992, survives. Also surviving are: children; William E. Swigart III, North Providence, R.I., Jeffrey F. Swigart, Malvern, Anne S. Seeger, Arlington, Va., and Mrs. Thomas (Susan S. ) Porter, Plymouth, Mich.; stepchildren; Stephen R. Hall and Mrs. Roy C. (Patricia E.) Krow, both of Hummelstown; a sister, Mrs. Thomas W. (Naomi S.) Miller, Huntingdon; eight grandchildren; three step-granddaughters and a step-great-granddaughter. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army, and was commissioned as a captain. He graduated in 1933 from Huntingdon High School and attended Wooster College, Wooster, Ohio, and graduated from Juniata College, Huntingdon in 1937. After college graduation, he joined Swigart Associates Inc., the firm founded by his father in 1907, with offices located in Lewistown. He was a lifelong member of the Stone Church of the Brethren, where he was a teacher of the adult bible class and served as a Deacon. He was a past president of the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, and the founding chairman of the Huntingdon County Community Chest, which eventually became the United Way. He served on that board for more than 60 years. He was honored in 1998 by receiving the Community Star Jefferson Award for outstanding community service, representing six central Pennsylvania counties. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor bestowed in Boy Scouting and the Good Scout Award, and was locally recognized as being the first Eagle Scout in Huntingdon, Mifflin and Centre counties. He was a member of the Board of Director of the Juniata Valley Council No. 497 - Boy Scouts of America and was the director of Boy Scouts in Mifflin County for several years. He was a member of the board of Pennsylvania Crimestoppers. He was a director emeritus of Swigart Associates and Penn Central National Bancorp; an emeriti member of the Board of Trustees, Class Fund Agents and served on the President's Advisory Council of Juniata College. He was a member of the BPOE Elks No. 976, Huntingdon, the Jaffa Shrine Temple, the Huntingdon Country Club, the Frank P. Hommon American Legion Post No. 24, Huntingdon, and a past president and a 60-year-plus member of the Huntingdon Kiwanis Club. He was the owner of the William E. Swigart Jr. Antique Automobile Museum, Huntingdon, the oldest car museum in America. It was started by his father and taken over by William at the time of his father's death in 1949. Since 1947, he was a life member, a past national president and former secretary of the Board of Antique Automobile Club of America, Inc. He served on the club's board of directors for 35 years, and had served as president and secretary of the Past Presidents Club. He was a member of the Classic Car Club of America, the Veteran Motor Car Club of America, the Steam Car Club of America, the National Association of Automobile Museums, the National Trust of Historic Preservations, the Fire Mark Circle of the Americas and Fire Mark Circle of London, England. He was also a member of the Train Collectors Association, the Automobile License Plate collectors Association, the Antique Toy Collectors Association of America and was a founding member of the Society of Automotive Historians Inc. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Stone Church of the Brethren, 17th and Moore Streets, Huntingdon. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home Inc., 114 W. Main St., Hummelstown, and from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Ridge Road and Juniata Avenue, Smithfield Township, Huntingdon, and from 2 p.m. until the time of services Sunday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
MILROY - David R. Szimanski Sr., 62, of 35 Leroy Lane, Milroy, died at 8 p.m. Friday, July 7, 2000, at his residence. Born Oct. 26, 1937, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late John and Catherine Lillian (Kane) Szimanski. His wife, Evelyn R. (Fisher) Szimanski, whom he married Oct. 27, 1956, survives. Also surviving are: children, David R. Szimanski Jr., Donna R. Pruitt, and Dianne R. Dotter, all of Baltimore, Md.; brothers and sisters, Nelson J. Szimanski, Edward H. Szimanski, Walter A. Szimanski, Catherine Clark, Betty Szimanski, and William T. Szimanski, all of Baltimore, Md.; and 11 grandchildren. He retired in January of 1993 from Signode Steel Strapping, Baltimore, Md. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Kenneth Wagner officiating. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, PO Box 551, Lewistown, PA 17044.
BEAVER SPRINGS - Ruth A. Shawver, 91, of Beaver Springs RR1, died at 9:20 p.m. Monday, June 12, 2000, at her home. Born Sept. 11, 1908, in Troxelville, she was a daughter of the late William and Elsie Irene (Dean) Fuhrman. Her husband, Kimber A. Shawver, whom she married in 1930, died March 31, 1990. She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ada Benfer, Helen Wagner and Eva Knapp; and two brothers, Paul Fuhrman and James Fuhrman. She assisted her husband in farming in West Beaver Township for many years and, earlier in life, she had cleaned at Aurand Funeral Homes. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, McClure, and the Troxelville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and her dogs and cats. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the McClure chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, North Brown Street, with the Rev. Kevin Brophy officiating. Interment will be in McClure Union Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Troxelville United Methodist Church, Troxelville, PA 17882.
MOUNT UNION - Helen B. Sheafer, 83, of 324 S. Shaver St., Mount Union, died at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at her residence. Born Dec. 30, 1916, in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late William M. and Rachel (Speck) Brandt. Her husband, Ira R. Sheafer, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Ann S. Bierbower, Fresno, Calif.; two sisters and one brother; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Mount Union Cemetery, with Vicar Shelby DePriest officiating. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Market and Jefferson streets, Mount Union, PA 17066. RICHFIELD - Earl E. "Mike" Sheaffer, 77, of Richfield, died at 1:05 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2000, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Born July 8, 1922, in Snyder County, he was the son of the late Sherman W. and Fannie (Masters) Sheaffer. His wife, Norma M. (Garman) Sheaffer, survives. Also surviving are: children, James M. Sheaffer, Steven A. Sheaffer, Timothy M. Sheaffer, all of Richfield, Mrs. Ronald (Diane) Goodling, Selinsgrove, and Scott E. Sheaffer, Middleburg RR4; brother and sister, Robert R. Sheaffer, Freeburg and Sadie E. Housel, Richfield; 13 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas E. Sheaffer and eight brothers, William Ellsworth, Theodore, Lester, Charles, Edgar, Russell, Arthur and Herman. He attended Crossroads and Stahl's grammar schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 with the 42nd Infantry, Rainbow Division in Rhineland and Central Europe and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He raised and sexed chickens. He was employed as a deliveryman by the Richfield Feed Mill and by Elder Ewing Construction, Selinsgrove as a carpenter. He retired from Shirk Construction, Richfield in 1995 after 29 years. After retirement, he became a self-employed painter. He was a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Richfield where he served on the church council and was the custodian for 33 years. He was active in the Richfield Fire Dept. in the 1950s and 1960s and was a member of the Richfield Lions Club. He was an avid Phillies fan, hunter and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Richfield, with the Rev. Andrew C. Weaver officiating. Interment will be in Richfield Union Cemetery, where full military honors will be conducted by the Juniata County Veterans Association. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church-Organ Fund, c/o George Snyder, RR1, Box 1008, Richfield, PA 17086. The Ronald C. RICHFIELD - Elva M. Sheaffer, 91, of Richfield RR1, died at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Sunbury Community Hospital. Born Aug. 15, 1909, in West Perry Township, Snyder County, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Annie (Snyder) Spriggle. Her husband, Theodore Sheaffer, whom she married Jan. 19, 1929, died Oct. 15, 1964. Surviving are: sons, Norman A. Sheaffer, Raymond E. Sheaffer and Gerald S. Sheaffer, all of Richfield; brothers and sister, Robert Spriggle and Mary Hubbert, both of Richfield and Howard Spriggle, Selinsgrove RR; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Faye Sheaffer; three brothers, Wilford, Clarence and Harvey Spriggle; three sisters, Marie Spriggle, Verna Spriggle and Alma Landis. She was employed as a seamstress by L. Shellenberger Shirt Factory, Richfield for 40 years. She was the oldest active member of the Richfield Mennonite Church, where she belonged to the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Richfield Fire and Ambulance Companies. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and making afghans. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Richfield Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jerry R. O'Connell officiating. Interment will follow in the Richfield Union Cemetery. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. Friday at the church, where family will be present 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Richfield Mennonite Church Mission Fund, RR1, Box 11, Richfield, PA 17086.
