MILLERSTOWN - John Richard Showers, 68, of Millerstown, died at 12:40 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at the Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg. Born Aug. 27, 1932, in Millerstown, he was the son of the late John S. and Grace (Siemanski) Showers. His wife, Mildred J. (Simonton) Showers, whom he married June 12, 1954, survives. He graduated from Greenwood High School, Millerstown in 1950. Also surviving are: children, Richard A. Showers, Red Lion, Sue Magill and Sandy Spade, both of Millerstown; a brother, Ronald Showers, Millerstown; and seven grandchildren. He was employed by Sprint, Newport and Carlisle, for 41 years as a lineman, an installer and repairman, and as a member of the Testing Board, until his retirement in 1994 in Facility Layout. He was a member of the Millerstown United Methodist Church, where he sang in the church choir. He was also a member and past master of Newport Lodge 381 F&AM; the Zembo Temple; the Zembo Chanters; the Zembo Luncheon Club; the Scottish Rite Consistory, where he sang in the Consistory Choir; the Perry-Juniata Shrine Club; the Newport Royal Arch Chapter 238; and the Millerstown Fire Company and Ambulance League. He delivered Meals on Wheels, was an avid golfer, enjoyed woodworking and music, and attending his grandchildren's activities. Services will be held at noon Saturday, at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, Sunbury and High Streets, Millerstown, with Pastor Katherine A. Behrens officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. The Newport Lodge 381 F&AM, will conduct a Masonic Service immediately following the viewing. REEDSVILLE - Keith B. Showers, 71, of 8 Mill Pond Road, Reedsville, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at his residence. Born Jan. 18, 1929, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Tressa G. Thrush. He is survived by a brother, Richard Showers, South Wayne Street, Lewistown; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He started his career with the Russell National Bank as a bookkeeper on Jan. 3, 1953. Between 1953 and 1969, he worked as a teller in commercial lending and the bank's mortgage department. In 1969, he joined the bank's trust staff and was later named a vice president. He retired on Jan. 31, 1991, with 38 years of service. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Lewistown and currently served on the Vestery, was acolyte master, head of the Altar Guild, and attended to many other church activities. He was active in the antique business and owned Keith's Antiques. He was also involved in the Golden Mile Farmer's Market and was a member of BPOE No. 663, Lewistown. A requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Lewistown, with the Rev. Dr. Derald Stump officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's Cemetery. There will be no viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 21 S. Main St., Lewistown, PA 17044. Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.
HUNTINGDON - Mildred A. Shriner, 74, of 424 Moore St., Huntingdon, died at 2:58 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at The Oaks-Westminster Woods in Huntingdon. Born Sept. 30, 1926, in Ennisville, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Jessica (Stewart) Oburn. She was preceded in death by two husbands, John S. Kauffman and Harry P. Shriner. Surviving are: children, John A. Kauffman, R. Dean Kauffman, Charles D. Shriner and Bonnie K. Shriner, all of Huntingdon, and Candy S. Brumbaugh, Cassville; sisters, Ethel Shaaf, Lewistown, and Hester Duey, Altoona; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters. She attended the Stone Valley High School. She was a waitress in Huntingdon County for 49 years, having worked for the Livery Stable and the Corner Room Restaurant in Huntingdon and later for Jerry's Diner in Warrior Ridge until her retirement. She was Methodist by faith. She was a member of the ladies auxiliaries of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 223, Huntingdon; the Standing Stone Post 1754 VFW, Huntingdon; and the Frank P. Hommon Post 24 American Legion, Huntingdon. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, 1106 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. James Thomas officiating and the Rev. Georgetta Hartley assisting. Interment will be in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon RR1. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
MILLERSTOWN - Robert W. Simpson, 77, of Old Ferry Road, Millerstown, died at 1:05 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2000 at Harrisburg Hospital. Born July 2, 1923 in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Elizabeth (Patton) and William N. Simpson. His wife, Reta M. (Willard) Simpson, whom he married Fed. 5, 1955 survives. Also surviving are: children, William H. Yoder, Atco, NJ, Robert J. Simpson, Millerstown and Carol D. Reich, Millerstown; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Russell W. Yoder. He was a 1941 graduate of Pitman High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1969, having served in the European, Pacific and American Theatres and retired as a Master Chief Machinist's Mate. He was a part-time beef farmer and opened the first H & R Block Office in Newport, and also worked in the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in the heating plant. He enjoyed raising beagles for field trial competition, and also enjoyed bowling and steam locomotion. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, Sunbury and High streets, Millerstown, with the Rev. James A. Neimond Jr. officiating. Interment will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, Millerstown. Friends may call from noon until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
MOUNT UNION - Jeannette M. (Hunter) Skopic, 81, of Box 1158, Mount Union RR1, and formerly of McClure RR1, died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born March 26, 1919, in Reedsville, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Kathryn (Civitts) Baker. Her first husband, Joseph E. Hunter, died Dec. 13, 1980, and she is survived by her second husband, Stephen Skopic, whom she married Jan. 18, 1986. Also surviving are: children, Joseph A. Hunter, Mrs. Robert (Wanda) Walters, Mrs. Philip (Betty) Greca, Mrs. Gordon (Shirley) Shawver and Ronald R. Hunter, all of McClure; step-children, Timothy Skopic, Dallas, Ellis Skopic, Orbisonia, and Albert Skopic, York; brothers and sisters, Betty Houser, Milroy, Fred Baker and Ellen Miller, both of Atkinson Mills, Frank Baker, Washington, and Robert Baker, McClure; 21 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Long; a son, Edward Hunter; a grandson, Lawrence E. Shawver on July 30, 1984; a brother, John Baker; and a sister, Helen Allenbaugh. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sugar Run Church of the Brethren, Mount Union and its Women's Fellowship. Services were held Sunday at Heller-Hoenstine Burnham Funeral Home, 108 First Ave., Burnham, with the Rev. James H. Hullihen officiating. Interment was in Wagner Cemetery. MIFFLINTOWN - Ralph M. "Sonny" Slemons, 58, of Mifflintown RR1, died at 1:25 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2000, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born May 5, 1942, in Lewistown, he was a son of Anna Mae (Milton) Slemons of Lewistown and the late Ralph W. Slemons Jr. His first wife, Joyce (Miller) Slemons, died Jan. 1, 1994. His second wife, Bonnie (Harlon) Slemons of Mifflintown RR1, whom he married June 21, 1999, survives. Also surviving are: children, Ralph W. Slemons, Lewistown, Kimbra K. Shope, Florida, and Mrs. Ronald (Tracy) Maidens, Oneoata, N.Y.; stepchildren, Mrs. William (Candi) Sellers and Mrs. William (Peggy) Traxler, both of Lewistown, and Mrs. James (Beth) Camp, Albertville, Ala.; a sister, Mrs. Milton (Patricia) Moyer, Milroy; six grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Slemons and Kenneth Slemons. He served in the United States Air Force. He was employed by Standard Steel, Burnham in the melt shop, retiring in 1997 due to disability. He was a member of Evangelical Methodist Church, Lewistown. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Roland T. Pecht officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
MOUNT UNION - Anne Love Smith, 74, of 42 Lower Country Club Road, Mount Union, died at 8:13 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25, 2000 at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born July 10, 1926 in Orbisonia, she was a daughter of the late Clair M. and Marjorie (Walls) Love. Her husband Ray L. Smith, whom she married June 6, 1944, survives. Also surviving are: children; Patricia A. Pavlik and James R. Smith, both of Lower Country Club Road, Mount Union; sisters, Jean Lukens, Lower Country Club Road, Mount Union and Joan Renaldi, Reedsville, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, C. James Love and Frank B. Love. She was a graduate of Mount Union High School and attended Shippensburg State College. Early in life, she worked as a telephone operator and at the defense plant in Carlisle during World War II. She also worked in the office at Hanover Canning Company, the Mount Union Cable Company, and as a receptionist at the Days Inn, Huntingdon. She was a member of Presbyterian Church, Mount Union, where she taught Sunday school at the elementary level and was active in the Presbyterian Women's Association. She was a member of OES Chapter 280, Mount Union and the Juniata Association for the Blind, and a past member of the Lady's Golf Association at the American Country Club, Mount Union. She was an avid bridge player, and at one time, she was very active in the Lower Huntingdon County Hospital Auxiliary. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Carol Barrett officiating. Interment will be in Mount Union Cemetery. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Sunday, and from 9 a.m. Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home. An Eastern Star memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Beaulah P. Smith, 80, of Ohesson Manor, Lewistown, formerly of Burgard Apartments, Lewistown, died at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 23, 1920, in Duncansville, she was a daughter of the late Theodore H. and Amanda J. (Smith) Ream. Her first husband, John E. Matthews, died July 1946, and her second husband, Harry E. Smith, died Dec. 25, 1964. Surviving are a daughter, Arlene M. Lepley, Lewistown; two grandsons and one great-granddaughter. She was the last of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, Cloyd Claar and Jacob Claar, and a sister, Mildred E. Yoder. Early in life, she worked at the American Viscose Corporation, and later worked as a waitress at area clubs. She was Methodist by faith. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 South Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Donald E. Peters Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown. Family will receive friends from noon until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, 276 Green Ave. Extended, Lewistown, PA 17044.
